1 LONG WAY TO GO.j I LONG…
LONG WAY TO GO. LONG WAY_O GO. Swansea's Loan Subsorip- tions Disappoint. 1 Monday was a disappointing day for the "Loan Campaign in Swansea, the re-1 suits rejxirted from the banks only bring- ing the borough's total the merst. trifle beyond the £500,000 mark which we re- i ported yesterday as having been reached. It nfceds to be emphasised that if the, town is to get near the 1!2,000,000 which is aimed at as a reasonable sum in view of Swansea's standing 'contribution to previous Joans and the greatness of* the nation's need of money, substantial sums will be needed on each of the remaining days of the week, and big and small in- vestors will alike have to take a full share. It its unthinkable tl)at present progress represents either the town's ability to pay or its appreciation of the need—to say nothing of its opinion of the terms offered—terms unlikely to be re- peated by the Treasury in our time.

The only pomt that concerns the writer [S thaiJ: the Company dissocil,t() themse:ves with the resolution, and that the large body of employes wlio wish to celebrate National Peace Day will have the oppor- tunity of doing so, as the Works will be closed rlo.w.n on Julv 19th.— Ynm-« r>tv> I E. S. Smith, July 8, 1919. Works Manager. THE MANNESMANN MEN. To the Editor. Si-r,-Re paragraph in your .issuer of Monday evening saying Landore Tnbe- workers would not recognise Peace cele- brations, I may say that that is the feel- ing of the few pacifists in the works and. not the general body of workers. Our only complaint is the. the celebrations are only for one day, and not a week as was anticipated.. B.M.T men have the same feeling for the old country to-day as they had in 1914, when they so v nobly responded. Thankfing you in anticipation of publish- ing tb;i.s Ilote, Y ours, .tc., i 7th Hussar. .MR. SMILLIE'S SPEECHES.
MR. SMILLIE'S SPEECHES. "What I Have Said." Mr. Robert SmilLie said at Danygraig on Monday* night that If I hold extreme views, I have. at least, not changed them." A study ot the views Mar. Smillie has expressed in recent yetars is of grea.t in- tere6t just now. At De-wsbu-ry in May. of last year he suift he had no' sjimpathy with re vol utionaiy methods in the shape of exercising force for the purpose of making the world brigtht and beaatiiul for democ-racy. He did not preach that they (should erect banrierg and go out and shoot people, but his- propaganda was. to effect a better condition of things by a revolution of mind and of thought on the part of the working clas&es. Only by education and have could they attain their object. The sort of love that fills Mr. Smillie's bosom was shown in his speech at Glas- gnw in December of feet year. The Sun- day Chronicle" reported him as having said that if 300for 250 L-a.bour memsbers were elected, these would say to the, Sinn Feiners. Your fight is our fight; oome over and help us." And they would come. (Cheers, and a voice: "They would give Lloyd George hell.") Air. Smillie's answer to the V-c-ice was, Doesn't he nee<l it ?" The Duke of NoHhurn-berlaml pointed out in June that am-ongst. other activities for which ATr. Smillio was responsible during the war was -he, format-icn of a I/abour C-ouncil to oppose compulsory ser- vice. At the notorious Leeds conference. in June, 1917, Mr. Siniilie associated him- sself with Mr. Ramsay Macdonald and Mr. Snowden ald other pacifist leaders, and recommended the patching up of peaee as the Allied Powers could not kno-ck out the Central Powers." In May, 1917, Mr. Snnillie scid he be- j lieved the time was not far distant when revolutions of a kind similar to that of Russia would take place in every country in Europe. In November, 1018, he sent a message to the Re-union of Rebels dinner, in which be said he was speaking to the men at Blackburn for the purpose of urging them utterly to refuse to recognise the Coali- tion Government, and at once form the Soviet Workmen's Government. At Larkhill in May he said he would not like to see any lord or duke killed or put in prison, but would like to say to them that if anything 5n the shape of a revolution broke cut the fault would not be that of Bob Smillie. j According to a letter from Mr. R. Chis- holm Robertson* ex-president of the Scot- tish Miners' Federation, given in the Scotsman" in October last, Mr. Smillie contemptuously refused the appointment of Food Controller, and publicly declared that he would not attempt the job unless he got plenary powers to enable him to effect forthwith the execution by hanging of all profiteers without judge or jury."

The defenctaiit, who had received empl-oy- menit with the Graigola Fuel Co., etill drew tihe out-oif-work do.na.tioin. Defendant allesged ttet the practice was cnoouraired by the officialls of the Exchange 1 who signed the forme for the men. This allegation was denied by Mr. Charles Clark, elf the Employment Exchange. The Bench considered the case a very eerious bne, and imposed a fine of £ 10. The Chairman added that the next per- eon who came before the Bench on a, similar charge would be sent to prison without the option of a fine.

I BIT 0" FUN." — I Sequel to Llansamlet Pe?ce Bonfire. At Swansea on, Tuesday BenjHmin P. Thomas (28), labourer; Tlios. John Tlioinas (29). furnaceman; Albert Johns (29), engine driver; Wm. Henry Stephens (f). salesiuian: Danl. Donne (2d), epelter- man; and John. Donne (12), laliourer, were charged on remand with being con- cerned together in breaking and entering a warehouse at the Aber Tinworks, Llan. samlet. and stealing a 40 gallon cask of lubricating oil, value £ 5 10s., the pro- perty of Richard Thomas and Co., on June 30th. Mr. Rupert Lewis prosecuted and Mr. Edward Harris defended. Mr. Rupert Lewis, opening, said that the men had made a "Peace bonfire," and had broken into the works and taken a cask of oil to place on the fire. They were in the act of breaking open the cask when they were stopped by tha police. P.S. (5) Thomas spoke to seeing de- fendants breaking open the cask of oil to put on the ,nre. He questioned them, and,one of the defendants said they would pay for the damage. Benjamin Thomae admitted' entering, the works and taking the oil. Mr. 'Edward Harris submitted that there was no felonious intent on the part of the men, who were celebrating Peace. The occurrence should be overlooked in view of the occasion. The Chairman (Mr. J. W. Jones) said the defendants had somewhat exceeded the bounds of their exuberance, but the Bench regarded it as a bit of fun to cele- brate the occasion. The cases were dismissed on payment of costs. •

I LOCAL PUBLICANS. Prosecutions Under Beer 1 & Spirits Order. I A number of licensed victuallers came before the Swansea Bench on Tuesday for offences under the Beer and Spirits Prices Order. Mr. Harold Booth prosecuted. Mro-y Jane Thomas, Coliseum Hotel, Swansea, was fined 25 for selling whisky above the maximum price on June 16th. Sevenpence was charged for whisky where- as the charge should have been 6d. Defendant pleaded guilty, and Mr. Xew- combe, for the defence, said, that Mrs. Thomas was not now in the business, but employed a manageress. f THE WHITE HART. I Thomas J. Thomas, White Hart Hotel, Swansea, was summoned for selling wliisky in the saloon bar, such whisky not being at the time on gale in the public bar on June 11th. Mr. Arnold said he entered the public bar and asked for whisky, but could not obtain it. A few minutes later he en- tered-, the lounge where he obtained i whisky. For the defence, Mx. Newcombe said that every morning the whisky in the house was divided into two parts—one for the public bar and the other for the saloon. On the day in question the stock of whisky in the public bar expired before the stock in the sal-pon. A fine of Ns. was imposed I MERMAID HOTEL, MUMBLES. 1 A similar summons in respect of the Mermaid Hotel, Mumbles, was preferred against the same defendant. Mr. Newoombe stated that the public I bar was closed owing to the shortage of ¡ beer. Only the saloon bar remained open. The Chairman, in imposing a fhie -of 60s., said he believed that the spirit should be sold in both bars. The Bench felt a I good deal of the prevailing uneasiness was due to the feeling that stuff was being re- served for what some regard'ed as the upper ten." If there was stuff in the house some of it should be on sale in the public bar. I MARINE HOTEL, MUMBLES. 1 A fine of £5 was imposed on Hannah I Dowman, of the Marine Hotel, Mumbles, for selling whisky above the maximum I price on June 9th. An excess charge of I lid. was made.

Defendant contended that she had bought the houses, and that the balance was mortgaged., the arrangement being f. that she should pay intere&t to the plaintiff. His Honour: You had no business to take the law into your own hands by taking forcible possession of the house. Judgment was given in favour of the plaintiff.

Fusion, a shipper, in respect of a load of Sugar, crockery, and soda, which had fal- j len into the King's Dock, Swansea. The bag of soda loosened owing to a iGk caused by the stopping of the winch, and the load fell..Plaintiff held that the ac- j cident was due to negligence; defendant thai, there was a fault with fbt, winch. The ship is now in the Mount Stuart Dry Dock, Cardiff, and his Honour, say- ing the evidence was contradictory, ad- journed the case until Wednesday, so that an independent engineer might examine the winch. Some discussion ensued on the engineer to be called in, defendant pleading that Cornishmen always worked together. He said he was a Swansea man, and demanded j "an independent Swansea man." (Laugh- ter.) The parties are to agree together op the engineer who is to examine the winch.

I MINERS AND INCOME TAX. !
MINERS AND INCOME TAX. Addressing the Llanelly Labour Coun- I eil on Sunday night, Mr. Mark Star, I Aberdare, said the miners felt that in- 'I direct taxation should be condemned and that direct taxation was the fairest basis. hile it was true that the miners at the present moment were only demanding the raising of the exemption limit of the income tax to E250-ancl every member of the Federation had refused to pay upon anything less than that limit fikm April oth last-they were going to plump for direct taxation. In the agitation for the C250 limit, the Miners' Federation was going to stand J>y its members, no matter what the con- sequences. A resolution was passed pledging the meeting to make common cause with the miners in their demand regarding in- come tax, and also supporting the South- port resolution regarding Russia and conscription.
