Down, near Wellington (Som.), who fought right through, and to this day is proud to bear the bars th-e medal and the scar-s he won when in his prime. 16 Years Well at 87 I am 87 new, said Mr. Bod ger, writing on 20th June, 1919. And, thanks solely to Doan's Backache Kidney Pills, I have for 16 years, been free from the worst complaints I ever had. I keep well and active in spite of my great age. (Signed) Robert Bodger." Sixteen years ago, on 31st Oct., 1963, Mr. Boclger said The bard- ships of war left lasting ill-effect upon my kidneys; and for ten years, until this wipter I was also plagued with rheumatic symptoms, sciatica, and bladder weakness, never at ease day or night. I got to feel that nothing could relieve me. "Doan's Pills changed all this. I began with them in doubtful mood, but they gave me surprising relief. Continued treatment rid me of every single sign of my complaint —I am thoroughly well, and feel that my cure is likely to last. I j recommend Doan's Backache Kid- j ney Pills with grateful confidence. ] (Signed) Robext Bodger." j I NS Mdney Pills* All dtaUrs. or 319 a box, from Fostsr-McGUH an Co8.W*IU St.* Oxford St.. De Witt's Kidney and Bladder Pilla have already proved themselves absolutely successful in thousands of cases, and testimonies, are pouring in from aJl over the world. Mr. Arthur Jarvis, of 32, Prances- street, Batter^ea, stated in 1912 that he had been completely cured after 40 years of acute suffering from Bricfht'a Disease. He says: "Tou may refer any- • <vne to me or make what use you like of this testimonial." Over 60 !,a,r. of aee, Mr. Jarvij eaid that for the last 20 years he toad only been able to w-ork for a few days at a time at long intervals. I YOUR IATlGt4S. I New Cards to be Issued Before Long. ) Food control is to go on, and the pub- lie will shortly have new cards. These j will provide for rations of butcher's ) meat, butter, and snsar, and the card I will also provide for three other com- modities not yet named, hut which will be added if and when found necessary. There will be no coupons, so that we shall revert to the first Lord Rhondda card-Cliat. for sugar. j Mr. J. Victor Evans, the Swansea Borough chief executive officer, told a Loader reported that in due course, but not until requested, the public would ) be invited to send their reference leaves i (which, are in postcard form inside the I present ration book) to the local food office. The carí)" for each family should be pinned together. Orce the reference cards has been sent in, the public should possess their souls in patience, assured that they will pret the new ration cards in due co-nrse. But they should carefully note the fact that they are not to send in the reference card yet. By the way. the public will he aHe to j choose any retailer they please under the new card. At present they are tied to a particular retailer, and may change i 0nlv with the consent of the food office. ¡ But when the new cards are issued, they I may nominate any dealer they choose, i \To change( however, will be permissible.
I The Day's Gossip. I
I The Day's Gossip. I Leader" Office, Tuesday. The editor of this journal, and Mr. Llewelyn Hayward of its contemporary— to whom felicitations on his marriage- were the first aerial passengers to Llan- wrtyd; and it would be less than grati- tude were it not placed upon record that they were received at the Wells with be- fitting ceremonial! The Abernant people took them into their plentiful hospitality, and feted the captain of the 'bus and his passengers so heartily that the memory of the day is still more pleasant because I of it. Are You There, Wells? I Llanwrtyd is a long-suffering and patient plaoe. If Swansea had to put up with the telephonic inconveniences to which the people of the Wells submit, it would go stark, raving mad! The difficulty seems to be the arrangement fixed by routine for a town lower down the line; and the extraordinary nature of the delays is well illustrated when I say that the two press- men—who cajoled and stormed and (nearly) cursed everyone from the Post- master-General to the telephone cat—were considered to have succeeded uncommonly well in getting through in two hours and a half. The manager of the Abernant puts in his mid-day call before breakfast! 1 would suggest that Llanwrtyd should take up this matter with vigour and press for instant redress. It is a first-rate scandal that business men recuperating at the Wells should be subjected to these intolerable delays. I A Public Institution. I The Swansea General and Eye Hospital is a public institution. It is supported by voluntary contributions, and its very exibteuce can be said to be dependent en- j tirolv upon the goodwill of the good folk r who contribute thereto. The Swansea I Hospital renders a public service of such magnitude that cannot adequately be em- phasised. Hundreds of cases, unsuitable I for home treatment, pass through the in- ,tistiuti,on every year. The public are miudful of their debt to the Hospital, and contribute liberally to its funds. I believe there is no one to deny that the public .is as dependent upon the Hospital as the latter is upon the public. On Sat- urday a gentleman journeyed from Aber- avon to see his father, who was lying dan- gerously ill at the Hospital. Owing to the heavy traffic the train arrived at Swansea an hour late and the traveller reached the Hospital some time after the I oiiicial visiting hours. Despite the un- usual and exceptional circumstances per- mission to see his father was refused him. As I have said the Swansea General 41ad Eye Hospital is a public institution sup- ported by voluntary contributions. A New Comet. I In 1906 a comet tvas discovered bs, I which appeared to have a period -about thirteen years, and con???lucnt'?y was ex-I pMtcd to return this year. A telegram from Paris brings the news t-iat the comet- has been. discovered by Max Wolf at Heidelberg, and also photo- graphed by M. GOLncsint at Algiers. It is of the eleventh magnitude and ap- proaciiing the sun. its present position being to the south of the constellation Aquila The Eugiej, The Heat Wave. 1. I What weuOierI .again un Monday txie I main topic of conversation in the streets -?i Swansea was Isn't n warm." A man and his w?ie were walking d?wn Wmd- >ioet, the hero carrying a kicking baby. He way quite visa to a. passing hand truck, on Wll :"n wac a block of ice. A few ,,ar,is fai-ti:er up a man reniat-ked on see- ing Ae iuass of eoolnese: "Phew! I shouldn't mind following that for a bit." Un the beach thol sands of visitors uuder. went a slow roasdng process, and yet there was some qu.ite ail ease. A group of Chinese sailors dressed 'n dungarees wan- dered through the town during the after- noon, and at least four of th-cm an: hied along vvich their hands in Lheir coat pockets, thoir coats buttoned up tightly to the nock, and the'r wide collars turned up almost to their aara. A Scouts Camp. The quietude oi the countryside as it lay bathed in pale moonbeams beneath a perfect summer night sky of twinkling stars was broken by the singing voices of 60 Boy Scouts sitting around a log fire near their camp. A Scoutmaster contin- ually added brushwood and logs of fir wood, and to a musical crackling the dry leaves converted into a spray of sparks shot into the air. The red heart of the fire was reflected in clear faces, and un- covered arms and knees of the lads who were engaged in singing popular choruses. Then a Scoutmaster turned on the grama- phone, a section gave a part-song, fol- lowed by a whistling solo or a 60111", with a chorus, and for an hour between supper and bedtime the boys made merry Then. joining bands, accompanied by a swaying movement around the red hot embers of the dying fire they sang 'Auld Lang .Sync' I and the National Anthem, before break- ing up and racing across the moonlit field to iLeir tents. Very soon I heard the camp bugler sound the lights out and the camp went to sleep. Welsh Place Names. iieachcomber in the Daily Ex- ,r,i,ess put a rathei amusing plea for the phonetic spelling of Welsh place names, by which he really means that the Homun alphabet shall have one pronun- ciation and one only, and that is to be tue English one.. On Saturday (he writes), I went to purchase for another a railway ticket to Llanwychlyn (and I would not swear that i have spelt the place correctly now, though I know it by Leart). Anyhow. I know the name of the place, so I said, Thlanoothlin It was •jo good. In the end the harassed bookinig clerk implored me to write it down, and the rest of the' ticket queue cursed me. I have also been bothered by Mahantleth, which spells itself very otherwise, and by Dinas Mouthy, which they spell Mawddy. Cannot Wales do something to-, help us? Why net. print all names twice ever, correctly and phonetically? After all, Wales is not a foreign country. But it is not like England, where the local pronunciation is obliged to give way to a more general opinion It may be correct, to speak of Lemster and Sissester. but the places are written Leominster and .Ciren-. tester, and so they are t)rono u need-] il:;a Derby, which pedants call Darby. If a human being c hooses to call himself Cmimley and write it the other way. we '■an't \elp it.. But we won't let our own j towns do it. Willi Wales we can only l for a humane consideration." Still I ii,!t jMlvise anyone to pronouns i in Norwich: and what about
