I Child re n's Corner. I I BY UNCLE J%OHN I II If it proved nothing eke, the competi- tion in drawing "Dad at Wbrk" proved t-Li,ai there is quite a variety of artistic talent among the children of the Corner." I do not suppose for a moment that Dad at W crk" in these pictures is the dad of the child who put on that title, but somebody oise's dad, or nobody's dad. I CHOOSING THEIR OWN TOPIC. But the young artists had grasped I wlwt I had in mind when I offered a prize for a drawing which gave them an opportunity to choose the workman whom they could draw beet at his own work, and that was exactly wihat was wanted. I THE WINNERS. Tho first prize (5s.) goes to L. J. Sevan (age 14), 38, Richard-street, Swaneea, for A Scaffolder at Work," and the second I prize (2s. 6d.) to G. A. Wydenhach (age 11), 22, Orange-street, Swansea, for A Miner at Work." I AN IMPORTANT COMMITTEE. I It was really a wonderful contest, and you ought to have seen the committee of judges (mostly appointed by them- selves) who. stood or sdt or jumped about trying to help Uncle Harold to decide which was best, and, of oourse, to have a chance of seeing a regular exhibition of pictures of all sorts, sizes, shapes, postures and equalities for nothing. There was Uncle Job, Uncle George, Uncle leuan, Aunt Mary, Auntie May, Cousin Beryl, little Auntie Lettie, Uncle Powell, Cousin Howell, and some others who came in and out and tried to look independent and to wear an air of HI don't care," What a pity dome of the competitors, who otherwise had sent excellent draw- ings, had broken th-a rules and conditions by using pencil work to add to the back- ground, or to embellisk the picture. itetter not name thlui. There wvere grandfather's clocks, marble timepieces, Venetian clocks, presentation alarum docks, and ohl-f¡\sh ion r<l wall clocks. The first prize (2s. 6d.) was won by Tom James, 25, C'rnn Lan, landrre, the second prize (Is. e-fi.) by G. Matthews (age 9), Killay; Willie Goiorge (9), Bank House, Waunar- lwydd, deserve to be highly commended. | and for a plucky little seven-year-old, George Perty, of Penyrheoi, Sketty. A PRETTY PENCIL VIEW. I Fred Richards (age IS), 5, Graig-ter- race, Swansea, sends me a very pretty view of Mumbles Head from Limeslade Bay." Of course, as it does not show Dad at work" in the picture, it is not intended for the competition, and, as it is in pencil (and not in hlk ink) it cannot be reproduced in the Leader." That is impossible. Still 1 gladly ac- knowledge receiving: it. Now, as so much time has been taken I up with the judging of the drawings, we must leave the other competition to be decided to-morrow. JUST ONE LETTER. I Therefore, let us conclude our after- noon's entertainment with the reading of the following letter:— 1354, Neath-road, ffafod, Swansea, 13/8/19. Mr. Dear Uncle John,—It is a very long time since J have written you, and I hope you will forgive me. But al- though I have not written I have read the Corner every night. I am enjoying my holidays very much even though they are being spent in Swansea. I hope you will enjoy your holidays. I shall miss you in the corner very much indeed. I am sending the story for the competition. Remember me to dear Aunt Mary and give her my love, also my best love to you.—From your loving niece, Eveline.
