Pembroke Dock 2, Border Regt. 0. I (BY "PENDRAGON.") j There was the inevitable batch of Cup Finals under both o??es on Satur- day. The English trophy wa.s won for the fifth time by the famous AsUjh Villa club, the struggle at the Crystal Palace being spoken of as one of the most remarkable 'in the history of the competition. The destination of the Welsh Cup remains unsettled. Swansea Town and Pontypridd drew at Cardiff alld so the match will have to be re- played at Merthyr on Wednesday. The result was rather surprising, the general opinion being that the Swans would win at the first attempt. Play- ing at the Vetch Field, Mond secured the Swansea League trophy. The John Davies Rugby cnp went to Dunvant, who beat Waimarlwydd on the St. Helen's ground by eight points to three. There was some amount of bitterness shown after the match. It appears that two players squared up to fight and had to be stopped by the referee. I THE ENGLISH CUP. I Everything else of course, over- shadowed by the English Cup Final. Wales sent a goodly contingent of spectators to the Palace and the fare supplied was thoroughly enjoyed. The Vilia missed a penalty and had a goal disallowed in the first half, and had Hardy, their goalkeeper, injured in the second. Fee a considerable portion of the game they were thus left wtth only ten men, but soon aiter Hardy's return they scored through Barber. Sunderland were -at times brilliant, but were not as fast as their opponents. The big match at Sydenham over- shadowed everything else in the world (,f football on Saturday. With the two best teams of the year at the Crystal Palace, the enthusiastic follower of the came had little interest in the ordinary League struggles. Yet there were in- teresting League problems to bo solved, even though Sunderland, with two games in hand, were too strong on goal average to be dislodged from the leadership of the Ifirst League. The life-and-death struggle at the other end of the table to escape relegation con- tinned between Chelsea and Notts County. But by winning at Middles- brough—a despairing victory -Chelsea are safej and it falls to Notts County to accompany Woolwich Arsenal to the Second Division. Notts County s home win over Oldham Athletic was, there- fore. unavailing. At home, First League teams scored 20 goals to nine by their opponents, \7is1tors secured little kudos, Chelsea being the only sido t<. win away. HEAVY SCORING. I Billed as the Campion Hugby Teaui of the Worki, the All Whites gave Bridgend a trouncing that they will not soon forget. rp to a certain point the losers played well. They had a hard-working pack of forwards, but they were lacking in the all-important element of finish. On a couple of oc- casions they actually failed to score when they had the line at their mercy. The enterprise of the All Whites has seldom been greater. 'I'hey opened out the plan, with astonishing skill, I some of their passing movements going' almost the whole length of t,he held. The two outstanding men were S. Jer- ram and Bryn Lewis. The former was easily- the most versatile man on the field. Sometimes he showed a tenueney to tand too far away from the scrum- rage, but as a rule he was a veritable bag of tricks- THE REVERSE PASS. I I do not remember ever having seen the reverse pass used to in such con- fusing fashion as it was on Saturday. Owen and Jerram made the opposing pair look quite small at times. The former would go away from the back of the scrummage in such a way as to leave Jerram perfectly placed for an opening. Some of the passes giveti were not over accurate, but the idea was there right enough. Jerram is one of the most deceptive runners I have ever seen. He can beat' a man by arching his back, or by feinting to pass—a thing he is quite an artist at—and he has withal a fine turn of speed. His two tries were very cleverly got. So also were those which went the way of Brvn Lewis. The Cantab put in a particu- j larly fine sprint when he scored after I running frum the centre. The only thing mat wounted against him was that I tendency of his to Hesitate. THE ART OF COMBINING. I There were periods when as ma.ny as eight Swansea men took a hand in a single parsing movement. George May- ward, Tom Williams, and D. J. ihomas Wt're continually opening out matters from the line-out. The iirst named as- tuni-shed us all by dropping a goal. Tom Williams, who made an attempt in do- ing something similar, had the chagrin oi seeing the bali go off in the direction of the corner flag; but even when this happened, quick following up on the part of Oswold Jenkins and Ait. Thomas nearly brought a score. Thomas main- tained that improvement, which made itself manifefct at Gloucester. He did some wonderful picking up. The Bridgend backs were poor. Thomas, the full-back, did some valuable tackling, but his kicking was not Bancroftiau by a long way. Bridgend's strongest point was for- ward, and it must have been very discouraging to the scrummagers to find their efforts so badly supported. A defeat of 32 points to nil carries so I much conviction with it that lengthy comment would be out of place. WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN. I What might have been a good display lof A:-iBOciation footbaJl was spoilt by A i strong wind at Cardiff on Saturday, when Swansea Town and Pontypridd drew in the final round of the Welsh Cup. Ai it was (writes Cygnet the game was ragged and in fact at timcls most interesting. Swansea, a!- though well served b.v their defence and halves were not so good in the forward line. True their preliminary efforts were good. but the finishing touches were decidedly off. On two occasions mbunderstanding deprived them of good openings. Grierson and Swarbrick lJ1 the first half hesica-ted while a simi- Jar incident occurred iu the latter half when Coleman and Ball waited for one another to kick. It was unfortunate. for had they utilised those chances there is little doubt but what scores would have been made. I THE KICK AND RUSH GAME. Pontypridd played ruore of the kick and rush me than Swansea, but thc'r front rani were well held back by Sutherland and Company, while Fisher was brilliant in goal. Duffy played a hard and good game, and so did Hamil- ton. Swarhrick was pretty good on the wing, but at times he failed to get his centres across. Grierson proved a dan- gerous man. and on one occasion he had hard lines when he hit the upright with a fierce shot. Ball and Messer both tried hard, but they were too well marked, while Coleman was injured in the first half, and could not be expected to do much. Altogether, a draw repre- sented the run of tho game, for neither side showed signs of superiority. The replay is to take place at Mid-Rhonnda on Thursday. CUP TIE FINANCES. __h r Previous to Saturday Aston Villa had shared in gates aggregating £ 7,900. Owing to Sunderland having figured in nine games, however, five of which had drawn over L2,00 each, the Wcarsiders previous to Saturday had a share in £ 16,500. Previous to Saturday just over 1,809,000 spectators had (-cn the ninety-one games in the competition proper, and they httd paid £ 78,500 for tiie privilege. • During tho Last dozen years the smallest attendance at a final tie at the Crystal Palace was the 66,000 at the Manchester City v. Bolton Wall- derers' game in 1904, and the Jaigest tho 110,000 at the Tottenham Hotspur and Sheffield United match in l-Vil. The Newcastle United v. Aston Villa fatal in 1905 is the only other occasion .previous ( to Saturday that a crowd at a toolbar match m i'.ngland has toped the hun- dred thousand. I WELSH LEAGUE TABLE. There were 20,000 people conveyed from Birmingham and district to Lon- don on Satiirday--an unprecedented exodus. No fewer than lorty special trains weic run. and the three leading companies arranged for no fewer than 275 saloon parties. Sever, therefore, has a Cup final aroused such fervid in- terest. After the Cup match Joe Bache, the captain of the team, said: "I think we just deserved to win, and am proud of the men w ho share the victory with me. It bs not been a brilliant game, though there ha* been some brilJiant play. It has been a very hard and trying game, and both sides have suffered from bad luck. The games are a terrible strain, and players labour under, great excitement." Many signs of .sympathy were mani- fest in the Leicestershire village of llatby on Saturday, when the remains of T. Jayes, the famous Leicestershire cricketer, were interred in the church- yard. The Welsh billiard championship has been won by Tom Carpenter, Cardiff, A record is probably established at the Palace for Cup games, for 110,000 to 4lic match. The numbers were unofficially returned a' 121,919, which would, of course, he a record for any match in Kngland. The record crowd at Sydenham is 110,000 ill 1901, In presenting the Cup to As en Villi at the close, the Earl of Ply mouth com- plimented the players on the admirable game they had played. The- Villa cap- tain was cheered to the echo. He said "Of course, I think we were the better team, hut I don't think we will win the League." (Shouts of "Have a good try.") SWANSEA TOWN Association Football Club, Ltd, To the Football Supporters of Swansea I We desire to bring to your notice the following facts in connection with the above Football Club:- 1. The formation of the Club has now been accomplished and has proved a big attraction to the public of Swansea as well as the neighbouring districts. 2 The Club has been the means of bringing thousands of visitors to the town who necessarily spend money for food, tram fares, and in other ways, and in the course of a year considerably increase the trade done in the Town. J. The matches have .provided for thousands of working men and others a healthy out-door interest week by wc-ek which they keenly enjoy. Their Saturday afternoons could be much less advantageously spent. 4. The success of the team which ha.s been got together ha.6 been remarkabla, and has justified the optimism shewn by the promoters at the oommeIJcement of the season. 5. The team's record is, we believe, a unique one inasmuch as in its first Mam it has placed us in the final of the Welsh Cup and well in the runniwg for pro- motion to the first division of the Southern League. 6. The Club has already risen to a prominent position in the Welsh Football world, and has created a stir even in the best football circles of England, thus ad- I' vertising the Town and keeping the na.me of Swansea before possible visitors all over the country. 7. The players who have raised the Club to such a level have bad and still have a strenuous time before them, and in order to relieve them and still main- tain onr present position, we realised that additional players should be securod, and have therefore engaged fotit- additional players of good repute. 8. This has meant considerable additional expense, but we feel confident that if our ambition is achieved it will be money well spent. 9. The expense of completing and maintaining our ground has been heavy. and the final instalment is still due to the Contractors, and which we are now called upon to pay. to We contemplate erecting a Grand Stand, turfing the enclosure, and improv- ing the public accommodation, and an expenditure of over kl.000 will be necessary. We think yon will agree that a first-class Association Football Club is an advantage to the Town in numerous ways, and we have therefore decided to make an appeal to the public of Swansea, for further financial support by taking up the portion of the share capital still unallotted at the present time, and amounting to JLLOOO. In order to carry on what has already proved to be a means of enjoyment and a great advantage to the public of Swansea, we wish to impress upon you the fact th&t although we are a Limited Compa.ny, we are not looking forward to dividends and pecuniary gain. Our only desire is to provide Swansea with a team worthy of a town of such importance, and this can oniy be done if we gain the confidence and I financial support of the public. We would like to see as many of the followers of the game interested as I possible, to the extent of a single Five Shilling Share at the lea-st. Applications should be sent to the Secretary, at the Registered Office, 130, King Edward-road, Swansea. W- am, Yours faithfully, J. W. THORPE, Chairman. H. C. BEHENNA. P. MOLYNEAUX. D. J. BASSETT.
