A deputation of Sheffield cutlery manufacturers waited last evening at the House of Commons upon Mr. Harold Baker, M.P., Financial Secre- tary to the War Office, to complain that many of the razors supplied \o the Army are not hand forged. Mr. Baker's reply was regarded as highly sympathetic*
-MEN'S THREAT.,I
MEN'S THREAT. I POSITION LOOKING CRAVE AT FiSH- CUABD. Great Western officials and a depu- ta,tion of men were in conference yester- day for upwards of an hour and a half. Thev again made demands for 5s. for ten hours. The officials suggested a resumption of work for a week, during which some scheme of settlement might be arrived at. Mr. John Twomey. who laft Fishguard yesterday morning for Swansea, returns this morning. The men's leaders declare that unless their terms are accepted by the company the cross-channel steam- ships will be held up this week-end. If necessary, they add, Messrs. Gosling and Anderson, who are in Cork, will be called into con saltation.

Lord Kitchener has sailed from Port Said for Marseilles on board the liner Kuno Masro. # The marriage of King Manoel and Princess Augusta Victoria of Hohen- zoUern-Sigmaringen will be oeiebrated at Sigmaringen on September 3. Mr. Griffith Jones, barrister, Swan- sea, contributed an article to the June issue of the "Westmiinster Re- view, n on the coming Land Bill. :I&: The Countess of Plymouth will open the new CaJdecott Nursery School in Cartwright-gardens, W.C., on Thurs- day next, at 3.30 p.m., when the Bishop of Stepney and Mrs. H. B. Irving will ln.?ngst the speakers. ? ? The French Ambassador in London has informed Monsieur Augustin, French teacher at the Swansea Muni- cipal Secondary School, that on the occasion of his recent visit to England, Monsieur Schoenfeld, the French Con- French Republic granted him the decoration of "Officier d' Acamedie." The decoration was transmitted through Monsieur Schoeneld, the French Con- sul. Monsieur Augustin last year gave several French lectures at the Free Library. :1= The Carnarvonshire County Council, of which Mr. Lloyd George is an alder- man, yesterday, without discussion, adopted the resolution that:—"We regard the persistent, vile, and un- scrupulous attAcks upon the reputation of the Chancellor of the Exchequer as a national insult and an attempt to prevent the democracy of this country, in the person of our countrym.an and others, to have :ts due share in the government of the country, and de- clare continued and unabated belief in his integrity and high statesmanship." # Welsh Liberals were pretty hard worked in consequence of the all-night sitting (say& the Parliamentary corre- spondent of a contemporary). Sir Ailfred Mond left the House at 8.30 yesterday morning and presided at the Mond Nickel Company's meeting at one o'clock, being back in the House in the afternoon. Mr. Towyn Jones left St. Stephen's ?.t the same time, was back again in the afternoon, went to Strat- ford and preached for 45 minutes, and returned to the House by 7.30 to find to ts disappointment that he had missed one division, but he had put in 26 in the all-night sitting. Mr. John Hinds motored home to breakfast, at- tended to business in the morning, was at the House in the afternoon, attended a Welsh dinner in the evening, and was back again before the final division. The Right Hon. Sir Alfred Mond Bart., M.P., and Lady Mond entertained a distinguished company to dinner at Lowndes-square last night. There were th ree tables, each being decorated with differently coloured roses-pink, yellow, and crimson. Lady Mond ap- peared in an exquisite gown of white satin and gold brocade, and wore some beautiful diamonds. The guests in- cluded H.E. the Italian Ambassador and Marquise Imperiale; H.E. the Greek Minister and Madame Gennadius; Vice-Admiral Sir Alfred and Lady Paget; Lord and Ladv Swaythiing, Lord Blyth, Lord and Lady Aberconwav, Lord and Lady Mersey, the Right Hon. Sir Rufus Isaacs, Sir Charles and Lady Mathews, Captain and Lady Clementine Waring, Count and Countess Sizzo- Noris, Hon. Mrs. Alan Gardner, and Brs. Arthur Strong.
A -GENEROUS EMPLOYER. I
A GENEROUS EMPLOYER. I GIFT OF FOLLY EQUIPPED HAT- DRESSING SALOON TO ASSISTANT. I At a general meeting of the Swan- sea United Hairdressers' Union held last night, under the presidency of Mr. T. D. Harries (Hatod), a very interest- ing proceeding toc-k place, the Psesi- dent, on beshaif of Mr. w. E. Hasquen- cort, [hairdresser, hosier, etc., High- street. Swansea, presenting to Mr. Dick Lewis, who was the head man at Mr. Hasquenoort's establishment, and who had served his employer faithfully for some 12 years, with a fully equipped saloon, situate in Fabian-street, St. Thomas, Swansea, together with the goodwill of the business, etc. The establishment, it was explained during the proceedings by the President, had been in the occupation of Mr. Jack Jones, another esteemed member of the Union, who was going abroad. Mr. Hasquenoort had made the purchase of the business, fittings, etc., which he now desired to hand over to his late em- ploye, Mr. Lewis, free of all liability whatsoever. The departure was a unique one in the history of the trwie of the omm- try, and indicated forcibly the ki»dly relationships which exited between employers and employed in the local hairdressing trade. The recipient of so handsome a gift had always been, and still was, a Trades Unionist to the core, and, like the donor, had always striven hard to promote the common weal Mr. Harries touched upon the high regard and esteem in which Mr. Hasquencourt, the donor of the gift was held, and the fact that he had con- sidered the natural ambition of every assistant to some day start for himself, and had recognised the services of so valued an assistant as Mr. Lewis, by now starting him, in common parlance, "on his own." (Hear, hear). The president then handed over to Mr. Lewis the document relating to the business so generously and consider- ately presented to him by Mr. Hasquen- cort. Messrs. F. W. Winter, W. G. Cam- den, Ll. Morris, B. Davies, and others fittingly remarked upon the generous spirit of the donor of the gift, and the high qualities possessed by the re- cipient, both gentlemen being staunch thad os unionists. Mr. Hasqnencort remarked upon the reasons why he had desired to give Mr. Lewis, who had been in his employ for some years, a start for himself. His (Mr. Lewis's) integrity, loyalty, honour- ablene-ss, and character, were above re- proach. He always regarded the mem- bers of his staff as companions and friends, and he was proud of them all. (Hear, hear.) He wished Mr. Lewis every success in his new sphere of operations. All other members present concurred. wishing Mr. Lewis every success, good health, and prosperity. The departure of Mr. Jack Jones, Fabian-road, St. Thomas, Swansea, for abroad next month, was commented upon, it being pointed out that Mr. Jack Jones, like his brother, Mr. Bob Jones, had been a pillar in the organised cause at Swansea, and two such stal- warts could be iil-spa-red. Mr. Jack Jones briefly acknowledged the kind words spoken of himself and his brother. The Union presented both brothers with scarfs, suitably inscribed, as a memento of their association with the I Swansea Union.
SELF HELP.
SELF HELP. HOW TABERNACLE CHAPEL MEMBERS MET THEIR OWN NEEDS. As already reported m the Leack-r yesterday, the opening of the Taber- nacle Englisii Baptist Chapel new schoolroom, Skinner-Street, Swansea, took place. It was the occasion for much rejoicing, for the structure had been erected at great personal sacrifice, and remains a. monument of the labours of the members. The opening ceremony was performed by Councillor David Griffiths, the Mayoress of Swansea (Mrs. Councillor David Williams) presiding. This was followed by a public tea. In the evening a public meeting was held, when there was a large attend- ance. -A solo was rendered by Miss Maggie Cox, and then the Rev. R. Ma.g ?,i?I lIoug?by, the pastor, led in prayer. The chair was occupied by Mr. W. Trafford, the superintendent of the Sunday School. Mr. Thomas Cox, the treasurer of the Building Fund, alluded to the fact that a deal of money had been saved by the members of the congregation de- voting their spare time to digging the foundations. Addresses followed by the Revs. Dd. Price, J. W. Causton, Beynon Phillips, W. F. Knight, John Phillips, Alderman W. H. Morris, Councillor T. W. Howells, and many others
