SWANSEA'S TRADE. -I
SWANSEA'S TRADE. I Swansea, Monday.—The returns of the trade of the harbour last week were more favourable than m'ght have been antici pated, under the oircuir.stantes. Compared witfli the corresponding week last year, an increase is shown of 17,000 tons. There was however, a loss as against the corresponding period last vear, the supply of tonnage that weyek being above the average. Thera was a I fair shipment of O a.l last W ek, and a Ixg 'Qcrea&9 in exports o.f patent fuel. An increase was also displayed in the impott trade. "THREE SKETTY HOUSES." I
"THREE SKETTY HOUSES." To the Editor. ;Sit.-In your otherwise accurate publi- cation of my remarks regarding Three Sketty Houses," for which I thank you. I am made to say, probably from a deficit wording of my supplementary letter, that my original informant was Mr. G. H, Baynham. and that the memory of the old Mumbles gentleman of 84 years was somewhat failing, while that of Mr, Bayn- ham is marvellously clear and active. Will you permit me to say that M- r. Baynham merely confirmed what he had previously told me as regards the first Sketty school, of which he was a pupil, having been held at Verinda Mouse, and that the whole of t.i, information, with- out exception, was supplied me by the venerable .gentleman of the Mumbles, whose memory, rather than that of Mr baynham, who is many years his junior, I particularly wished to emphasise as being" remarkably clear and active." True, the memory of another aged ex- Sketty gentleman who gave me informa- tion in regard to the origin of Singleton, which you inserted in a former communi- cation, is something failing, and at his own request, and for the purpose of veri- fying it, I subsequently interviewed the old Muihbles gentleman, who corroborated substantially all he had told me.- J ours, etc., jours, etc., J. PUDSley Newton, May 17, 1919.

! WHEN KJNG COAL IS IDEPOSED.
WHEN KJNG COAL IS I DEPOSED. i The Electricity (Supply) Bill now before Parliament lays down the j practical proposals of the Govern J merit for the development of the us3 of electricity in every phose of our t national life, and it is essentially a I measure redolent of the breath fJ the New Age. So important are the possibilities of electrical power, I so embracing are the proposals of the Government, so full of signifi icanco is the Bill to the future I commercial and industrial. life of I Britain, and particularly to that of South Wales, that we are tempted not only to deal with the Bill at some length, but to urge upon out- readers who have at heart the pro gress of the channel ports to make themselves intimate with all its- forty-five clauses. The Government does not pro- pose for the present at any rate to nationalise electricity supply; and exception may be taken in some quarters to this on the ground tlvu private enterprise may ultimateLy lead to a recurrence in a new form of that industrial warfare which in the past has so afflicted our national coal industry. We think this ob jection to be ill founded, for :t might be unwise in this. after all the incipient, stage 6f the deevlop ment of electric science, to take a 1 step which might tend to deprive the nation of all the inventive genius which we shall need if are to be in the forefront among the nations in the science "which will govern the future life of the peoples of the earth. The proposals may be briefly stated. A new body of electricity commissioners is to be appointed not exceeding five in number, and will act under State direction. It will be within their province t-o create districts, incor- porating for each district a District- Electricity Board. The Board mlist include representatives of muni- cipal and private producers of con sumers and of labour. The Board's duty will be to provide and secur-.s the provision of a cheap and abun dant supply of electricity withiii their district. It will be compt tent for a Board to lease the whole electricity system for its district to a private company. The Board will also fix prices of current, and as the science progresses and cost of production is reduced, the bena- fit will accrue to the consumer. We have already alluded to the local' significance of the new measure, marking as it does a dis- tinct stage in the progress whiefo is destined to revolutionise every phase of commercial life. When electricity comes into its own— that is as soon as man has fully mastered the production and con- trol of this still mysterious force-- we shall be well on the road to the abdication of King Coal. When that day comes it will .be a serious matter for South Wales unless we are prepared in our ports and our industrial areas for a new order of things. The town and port of Swansea is well on the way to be- coming the metallurgical centre of the world, and it may well continue >n that position long after men have ceased to labour in the bowels of the earth for dusky diamonds. A new heaven and a new earth wi!i have been created when our works are run on electrical power. When chimney stacks and all their attend- ant ugliness have been scrapped, no longer will an industrial district need to be unsightly because of its industry. No longer need a works be grimy because of its output. The toiler may yet go to his work in linen collars. The world is going to be a very good place to live in. But Swansea and South Wah1,* will have no desire to see this new age hastened in its coming, and it behoves those of us whose capital m script or in handicraft is wrapt up in coal, the mine owner and the miner, to see that no action of theirs in preventable labour disputes drives the nation to a progress IIi electrical discovery that is other than normal. There is too mu ;b invested in this area, the stakes on both sides of industry are too large, for the capital to be thrown away by suicidal strikes. If only from the base standpoint of materialism it behoves us whose sustenance comes from the coalpits to guard against unreasoning strikes. The great physician has decreed that King Coal must pass out, but a little care on the part of the patieot and his subjects mav well prolong his life
TOWN TALK. I
TOWN TALK. I Tha popular song of to-day in the Val- ley: "Farewell foui-pcnny." There were no borough cases before tha Swansea Court on Saturday. The :\iu.s1Ïn Order was in force at Neath on Sunday Among the ladies, of course! -:0.- Now that Turkey in the molting pot, it is only natural that i:,0111e of it eliould go to Greece! —:o- — Just a slip o' the tongue at Neath Police Court: "This man. your worships, is charged with riding without a bike I" Cooper, the Britoni'erry bowler, lived up to his name on Saturday. He made "rings" around the Swansea batsmen! —O:— Don't think that the man who wears a pnnama these (lays is necessarily a millionaire. Perhaps he hasn't paid tor it. A lien, belonging to a Neath journalist, has laid an egg four inches long, and weighing just over a quarter of a pound. Ls this a national record? It is said that the honour conferred upon Mr. William S. Thomas, dulai-s. by the Spanish GovernniTntSfti never hitherto been won by a Britisher. -:0:- In a few w^eks, perhaps in a few (1ay, the Ottoman Empire will have. ceased to exist:"—\ ide the Press. Another fuliil- merit of prüph<!c,y-" th-e drying up of the Euphrates." — :0:— In Swansea on Saturday onions were aa scarce as .strawberries. But now that peace is in sight perhaps the Breton onion-sellers will come over again this summer. Won't they be welcome? —iO. — The site for the Pontarclulais housing scheme as approved of by the Llandcilo Talybont and the Swansea Rural Councils, occupies over 27 aercs of ground, situate in id-eal surroundings. — :o All real service meang sacrifice, and $8(rifjoe means brokes-ne?. from which all the most beautiful things have co?'. Wholeness spells selfishness—use- lessness.—Rev. 11. C. Marnier. h —:oc — Playing for Nenth County School C.C. on Saturday. Arthur Culley was batting for, over one hour, made niii-e runs, and was ninth man out. Going in first his order ran: Poke." And he did! —o:— There's one tiling about these new straw hats which I don't like," said a young man on the Promenade yesterday. They make so conspi-noiic the' straws worn by many of us hst rummer." What was the matter with the wafer in tlu- west end of the town over the week- end ? The sample supplied in Brynmiil on Sunday was certainly not up to tho standard required in a wateT drinking community. — -o:— Unless some dog-owners in Swansea soon wake up to the fact that there is such a thing as a Muzzling Order we can li a tiv(,.Iv ti-,iiQ, tlir, see the police having a lively time, the magistrates having longer sittings, and the revenue from fine-s 11 going up with, a bang." — :0:— The authorities are offering tl to arv- one spotting a mine washed ashore. Tu such an eventuality it is to be hoped that they will act more quickly than they have in removing drums of musfnrd gas washed ashore around the Gower coast. Tho*1 is one very important- auestksn exercising thft juvenile mind in Swan sen insf now. The youngsters are an:doT?s to know if the Sunday School treats are goiJ11i(' to be held this Whitsun—and on the scale prevailing in the happy days before the war. — -O:— The beauties of the Vale of Neath were never more conspicuous than just now, and as one passes out of the indusffi.it hive further and further east the vista that ooens Uf) of fre;h pasture lands and shaded woods is one to gladden the hearts of men. — :0:— The school children have a grievance. Empire Dav falls on Saturday next, mak- ing one h()J;rbv.i less; and the official peace celebrations will probably take place in the month of August, which Plenii another three davs missed. However. parents will be satisfied. Swansea is not so far behind as come neople won Id have us believe. The Sun- day papers stated that the first cnrW gooseberries were on sale at Covent Gar- den on Saturday. So they were in Swan- sea, and very nice thev looked, packed in tiny baskets, in a shop window. ":0:- The "Peace Celebrations" will be a rank failure in the tinulate manufactur- ing areas, if it be definitely decided to hold the same during the first week in August, for this is the fixed date of the tinplaters' annual holiday, and which is so generally anticipated and made full use of. There are many men in Swansea who are glad that the new fashions include the provision of pockets in women's coats. l The wife will no longer have the excuse that she hasn't got her purse becauso of the absence of pockets in her coat and .skirt. It won't take her long to njui 'mother, though [ i-:v o-.n Satur d av Swansea wa? almost dry on Saturday ri?ht. and it is rumoured that a few hard cases ta-ted ginger Tieer for the first timo since childhood's day*. The returning crowds from Clyn<' may Jbe responsible for the shortage in th$western outskirts, but it i, harrllv fair to blame them for the trouble nearer town. -:0:- The magistrates and officials were just about to retire from the Swansea Court on Saturday morning when a Pressman placed an unlighted cigarette hotween his lips before, he was quite clear of the .court. Imagine the effect on the faces of the great unpaid," who threw deatli- dealing glances towards the door. The Pressman is still alive. o: Apropos the nipfhtingfile paragraph in Saturday's Gossip column, a district correspondent writes confirming the state- ment that the wonderful songster is occa- sionally heard in West Glamorgan. lie remembers years ago crowds of people from the surrounding districts making nightly excursions to hear the bird sing- ing in a wood near Skewen. :0: A correspondent writes:—Apropos your Town Talk paragraph in Saturday's Leader abotit the unusual activity of crows this year. I may say this is the first year in my gardening experience that I have had to protect broad beans against their depredations—and that experience extends over seven years. They overcame such obstacles as sticks and bramble I bushes, but were successfully kept away by a scarecrow made up of an old lady's I skirt and gent's velour hat! -0: At the performance of The Foresters" by the Gowerton County School children on Saturday evening Mr. Williams, the headmaster, made quite a hit in his remarks when thanking those who had contributed to its success, and also for the support that had been given. The week of dramatics at Gowerton," he said, "had about come to a close. By the way, Covent Garden dramatics had also opened that week, but by far the most important was the Gowerton dramatics I"
