I DRISGOLL AND ROSSI _
I DRISGOLL AND ROSSI GREAT CONTEST AT MOUNTAIN I ASH OLD CHAMPION RE-APPEARS The great claeh between Jim Driecoll and Francis Roega ended in a drav-a re- suit which I think hardly anybody fore- saw. The sporting population of Britain had discussed the bout in oil its possi- bilities, and was divided into two camps -those who, like myself, believed it was impossible for any old. champion to "come back," and thoee who pinned their faith to the Cardiff Irishman to retain enough of his superb skill and his speed to outpoint clever Pontypridd boy. Most of us had calculated on a contest i i in 'which the rounds would have been of. three-minute duration, but it is onlyofair4 to Driscoll to eay that he finished the fresher of the two. Probably a return match will be arranged over the full championship course of 20 3-minute rounds. i MAGrCRI NGCRAFT. j The contest was a iine tussle of skill; between two, very able boxers in which i the handicap of age Was set off bv Dns- 1 magic ring-craft. Rossi boxed very well, and probably there are not three men in the country who could have stood up aga?nat the tactics he pursued, and the speed he exhibited. Hut well-thought out manoeuvres were neutralised tirn. after time by the wonderful judgment of. the veteran. Rossi, nearly every round, would cut looee a punch that looked like a decisive one, well-judged, well-directed, and like lightning. The connecting instant, however, would see Driscoll give his head the slightest of turns, or hie I body an almost imperceptible 6way-anri I the daisy cutter would end its stroke where it bega.n, on thin air. I SECRET OF STAYING POWER. The secrec of Drisoali's lasting powers were wrapped up in this efficient conser- vatism of energy. It wag like-a perfect batsman. facing the bowling of & whirl- wind trundler—disaster in every delivery but for that masterly turn 01 the wrist at the other en a. If you like, the triumph of mind over matter. At the outset, as I had hinted might be the case, Rossi seemed to have slight symptoms of stags-fright, and Driseoll was cvble to show effective attack, but the next meeting eaw the veteran missing 0:1 several occasions. The third round was a warm one, and Rossi at last managed to pierce the defence with a great right hook to the chin. A second-rate boxer oouid hardly have avoided disaster. But the master mind of Driscoll was alert. As the bk)w landed, the chin was in retreat, and though the blow counted in assessing points, little damage was force was lost, though its direc- tion was good. The fourth session was DrisoolPs all the wy. He ducked, slipped, and turned aside Rossi's intend-ed blows, then, played the part of aggTeasor with both hands. His left was in Rossi's face as often as.out of it. and an old cut over the Pontypridd lad's nose was opened. Then in the sixth he landed a hot right to the point, with a quick follow-up with the left to the body. Prora the eleventh to the fourteenth, Rossi, managed to mako up some leeway, but the effort was not fully sustained to tllg- end, and the filJal gong sounded after a very hot session, in which. Ecssi was j finally pinAed in a neutral corner, and taking his gruelling like a game -,U-R, THE POPULAR OPINION. The verdict, I think, was a fail, criterion, but many good i-lidges felt that, Driscoll had deserved a win. Mr. Eugene Corri was unable to oificiste as referee, and his place was taken by the veteran Dan Whelligan. BROOKS BEATS PLESTED. The principal contest at a crowded box* ing tourn&ment at the Prince's Theatre.- Preston, cn Saturday afternoon, was one* over 15 rounds between Kid Plested, of; Birmingham, and Will Brooks, of Aber- a von, in which both men quickly got to work and indulged in some heavy hitting. The bout went: the fall distance, bot h. men finishing strongly. The verdict went to Brooks by reason of his cleaner styla and more direct leads.

SUMMER FOOTBALL. Schoolboys at Aberdare. Swansea, 5; Aberdare, 3. The play in# season of the Swajwea Association Schoolboys was brought to W,, close on Saturday, n-hen the Abirdarsr boys entertained the Whites, who proved' victorious hy five goals to three. The Hwansea side inoiuded seven 7aew young^ers with a view to finding new- talent for next soa»on. In the first half Lanyon, the. young International, scored for Aberdare. who crossed over with a one goal load. Swansea^ found"' their feet ia the second moiety, and Haines and I,.è'v;; provided sparkling runs and centres. Fur- nival played delightfully; he fed his wings with precision, and was always in -position when Haim'tS and Lewis sent acros.* their centres—Furnival scoring three epiendid goals in thig manner. Craig played a mas- terly game q t centre half, and the threw defenders were, on the whole, sound. W ifn. such a trio of forwards As Haines, J,i. and Furnival, a stinging attack for next w«v?on is assured, whilst Craig, E. Thomas, Price, and E. Hu*,b form the nucleus of a. strong rear diviljon. The only failure in Saturday's eleven vrtis r. Thomas, who seemed nervous and hesi- tative. Swansea^—Edwards (Industrial); Price (National and 33. Thomas (Banygraig); E. Hughes (Dyiatty), F. Craig (oapt., Dyfatty) and F. Thomas (Municipal Secondary); W. Ijewis (Industrial), J. George (NationalV R. Furnival (Sketty), Sullivan (Mun. Sec.), and F. Haines (Thdustrial).
