I PASTOR'S PAY. I
I PASTOR'S PAY. I I A Sad Illustration From [ Swansea. I i Sir.—Whilst we heartily congratulate those Churchcs which have risen to the > occasion, and pay their ministers a reason- able wage; and fully a-rree w:.rh the T,r" position made by the veteran Minister of j Penarth at the recent English Baptist AssociationThat Churches should pay j their ministers at the rate of f 1 per I annum per member," and also with the j wiebee expressed by a host of good lay- men and ministers at Associations of the! various Denominations held during the present month that ministerfe' salaries' should be adequately ricen to meet the' high cost of living, ro that the ministry; might retain its position and honour eid« — by side with other professions: yet the following lamentable facts can becitpd oi a young minister within the radius of fin miles from the Leader" Oiffce; who it also considered as one of the I)i.-L-cd <n his denomination "—a young man of ript advice and leadership—who receives lesi than £100 per annum although his church numbers somewhere about 150 members with debt well tinder band. It is statr-d that he had no money in the house for a whole week to buy the neces- saries of lite, and has been unable to buy a suit .of clothes for some ytnrs, v: r hp expected to prepare a palatable spread for his flock, and offer a raiment whole and spotless to his people from Sunday io Sun- day. What encouragement! Certainly Mr. Editor, there is this consolation, that the age of miracle?, and the vindication of much grace and forbearance has not wholly passed away. But in the name of Christianity, shonld such a state of things be tolerated in Christian (?) Wales? Wliero people crowd their places of worship on the Lord's day-join heartily in the praise to the accompaniment of a fine pipe organ, and eeated themselves on cushy 600" tc Enjoy a sermon by a minister heart was heavy with care, anxiety m-' worry, and whose once black coat, now grey with old age. For pll this, coupled with much affronts and discouragemenrs of all kinds throughout tlie month, at the end thereof he has to seek the small pit- tance, which after all efforts. en<jr<jv and tact goes to say that the Servant is not worthy of his hire." We again heartily thank you for tlif prominent place you have given the v—<•! question in yonr valuable paper, and fcr the substantial service it has given the causo already. Yours etc. Cymro. i

For the Ladies. 1
For the Ladies. 1 THE COMING FASHIONS I Dossgns and Patterns of I Beautiful Dresses. 1 —— By MADAME GWENDOLEN HOPE. Short sleeves are particularly popular for very hot days; but when the weather becomes cooler the sleeves are worn slightly longer, though etill little, below the elbow. The low-cut nock rules every- where—indeed, there is ';¡'¡'1 difference in this respect between day and evening gowns this sea-son. One novelty has been introduced in soino of the most advanced models, and that is the panier of old time. It is very pretty and becoming on the narrow skirts so universal, and remedies what miglit- otherwise be too severe a plainness. Fringes still rule as trimming, and the most favoured—a? well as the most expensive—fere made of j feathers. These fringes are showu in many brilliant colourings—emerald srreen being very popular, A Smart Cape-Coat. I The popular garment depicted in the sketch is made of green and grey plaid, with gathered waist efi'oct and pointed sides. There is fancy stitchery on the collar. The cape-coat is surmounted by a very elegant feather toque. Tbe fib-ape of the collar and tho hanging sleevie6 if __—- i «<■ I particularly novel; otherwise thefe is « j plainness about the whelo that adds to it chic. It hangs ra ther full around the j figure, and entirely covers the frock worn beneath. There are many examples of thaee eapep on the market at the moment, but none more elegant than the one pic- tured here. Suit for a Small Boy. I The picture illustrates a most fascinat- ing suit for a lit tie boy. The knickers are composed of black satin; and the dainty little blouse is of spotted musjin, with frilk at collar and cuffs of the kind known as Toby "—only slightly mcdi- I — ) fied. The little lacing in the front is a pretty touch, adding much to its artistic value. There is a slit pocket in the kniekoire that is sure to please' the email man. If the shoes and pocks carry out the same scheme the ensemble may be made quite delightful, and eXcéedingJy; becoming and useful for wear on hot and trying days. i A Becoming Hat. I The graceful model hat suggested here it made of brown liseret etraw, and is trimmed with brown moire ribbon, which encirdee the crown smartly. There is also a cluster of shaded pink roses at the sidc-, which rests on the hair. The chic of this hat depends entirely on its j line "—turning up on one side and ) bending down on the other, and the sharp point at the hack. It would be equally becoming made of velvet or satin, thoogh for eummer wear liseret straw seems to lend itself more kindly. The hat is quite a picture model, and thus suitable for wear on smart occasions, t

Children's Corner.
Children's Corner. BY UNCLE JOHN. A class teacher who has taken rn interest in this column and haped h" £ pupils to take part in the competitions, wrcte to me last week: Since the ippeorance of the Children's Comer in the Leader I have had no peace. I real over dozens of attempts at writing the essay on How I spent my holidays," and. as I did not want to dis- hearten you in the reading of all of theia, I told the children I would only send in a few of the best." Thank you. The hints in your second letterr will b? very uscfir". For thf- eye but not the oar," sent rln by one 0;£ the Comer Children, is not hy any means new, but for the sa.ke of those who may not know it, we will hare it:— Wife, make me some dumplings of dough, They're better than meat for my cough; Pray, let them be boiled till hot tbrough. But not till the're heavy or tough; Now, I must be off to the plough, And the boys, too (when they've had enough), Must kc-op the fEes off the bough WMLe the old mare drinks at ihe trouen.11 Under the heading of Household Hints" a naughty boy sends me thioeo:- To keep mice away from the pastry— put all the food in the cellar. To remove sta;m frcm tablecloth—u&e sciseo-rs. To entertain female guests—show them your private papers. To entertain male guests—feed the brntelk. To test the fredmees of an ègg-drop it on some hard surface. To ke^-p servants—chain them up. I hope not one of you will take those hints seriously, or there will be trouble in the Children's Corner." Just a saiaple to-day of the riddles re- ceived What i* the difference between the death of an hairdresser and the death ¡ Off a eettlptorr" One curls up and dyes, and the other mates í.a.cc; and busts. II What is odd about a horst. eating f" He eats best when he hasn't, a bit in his mouth. And now for one of the smart lyings:— A little girl was (ne day walking with her father along the shore; they w<Te w?tcain? the b??ats ccm and go. vh?n all of a sudden the little girl spied a motor boat, and turning to her father ) said: "Oh Pa. look at the locomotive j hating a. bath."
