1 i Br??1 ? t?? B?  ??e For the Ladies. Discoveries hy Other Women. Duvetine, velours and other fine-nap woollen fabrics, when wrinkled and de- pressed, will fluff up very quickly if steamed just as one would steam velvet. They should never be pressed with an iron. And this ruie also applies to seams when making a coat, hat or dress of these materials. To steam duvetyn lay a hot Sat iron on an ironing-board, with the fiat surface of the iron placed upwards. Place a wet muslin on the under-side of the pile fabric and draw it from one side to the other over the iron, so that the steam will pass through. When coloured gold or silver slippers become marked at the toes from dancing, clean the marks off with bread-crumbs mixed with powdered blue, and ihen rub the toes with A piece of old red velvet. When this method fails to remove the stains, the slippers may be touched up with a little gold or silver paint. To make your boy's shoes last much longer, also to make them practically waterproof, rub with castor oil. Apply it to the soles as avcII as the uppers when new, and then about once a week. Good shoes may be ruined by drying quickly against or on steam pipes or in an oven. They should be allowed to dry s!owly, and if trees are not available, the shoes should be stuffed with tissue paper or newspaper. Since gold lace is expensive, its care and restoration are always worth while. Before attempting to wash fihe laces al- ways baste them on to a strip of flan- nel, using care to see that every point is sewed down smoothly. Then, after making thick suds of pure white soap, add two tablespoonfuls of borax to a pint of boiling water, and mix with the suds. When this has become just luke- warm, put the lace into it and leav it there to soak for several hours. It should than be dipped up and down, I gently squeezed out, and dropped into a bowl of warm suds. Again dip it up I and down gently and rinse in clear water until all the soap has been removed. To this last rinsing water add a tablespooii- ful ctf borax, so as to give it a little crisp- ness wSaen dry. _J,;
I EX-SERVICE MEN.
I EX-SERVICE MEN. Swansea Guardians and Problem. I Swansea Guardians met on Thursday, Mr. David Grey presiding. I Letters were read from the Ministry of Health sanctioning recent increases in officials' salaries, including those of Dr. D. Morris Williams and the clerk, as well as the practical adoption of the N.U.C. scale. A letter with reference to two aliens, unemployed because their fellows refused to work with them, eta ted that the Government allowance was not available, and that theoe men must be relieved, if at all, under ordinary poor law relief, but the Clerk said that the men had been privately relieved. Another circular announced the in- crease of vacfcinatioh fees by 100 per cent I GRAIG HOUSE. j With reference to the proposal of tfap Swansea Corporation to purchase Graig House for a maternity and child welfare institution, a letter stated that the Ministry was prepared to consent to this, at. a prioe to be fixed by independent valuation. A letter had been. received from Viscount Milner on the question of a Bill empowering Guardians to get at men who, had deserted their wives and gone to the Colonies. The letter stated that a Bili was being put forward for that purpose I EX-SERVICE MEN. I A Government communication nrgell that when ex-Service men applied they should be specially treated, and not placed in casual wards. Mr. Bart Cromn moved that this be adopted under protest. I Mr. Thomas urged that hospitals should 1-0 established, or convalescent homes- homes of rest for our crippled warriors Mrs. H. J. Williams said they had been protesting against this ever since soldier* or sailors had been comina into the in- stitution, but they had to make provision ?for-them. She ?eo pointed out that I' they were in the Workhouse they would get as good treatment as in the Hospital Dr. Harrington remarked that if they ;,anctionrd this proposal, the Government would stultify themselves. He thoughi they should simply protest, still doiny their best for the ex-Service men, but not make it an official regulation. The Government ought to be made to undei- Aland that they protested against these ,'len being there. Mr. Bart Cronin: What ard you going do? Dr. Harrington: The best we can. Mr. Cronin: I would like you to do little better than you are doing now. During the war the tramp problem dis appeared. Among the tramps of the future there would probably be many ex soldiers, and he wanted them to receive better treatment than the ordinary I tramp. THE RESOLUTION. Mr. W. II. Thomas moved that a reso- lution of protest against institutional treatment for our discharged soldiers and sailors, and that copies of the resolution should bo sent to Sir Alfred Mond, Mr. David Matthews, and the Prime Minister Mrs. Williams called attention to the fact that the Poor Law Association was meeting next week, apd proposed that a copy of the resolution should be seni J there. Mr. Meredith proposed that these tften I might be lodged outside, even if it cost a little more. Mr. Bart Cronin seconded. Mrs. Harris supported. Mr. Phillips pointed out that this was a question of medical treatment, and urged that hospitals should be provided. The amendment of Mr. Meredith was lost, and the resolution of Mr. W. H. Thomas was adopted. VOTES OF CONDOLENCE. On the motion of Mr Matthew Griffiths, a vote of condolence was passed with tie relatives of Mr. Samuel Williams, Pont, urdulais, at one time a member of tiiafc < Board. i otes of condolence were also .passed with the following:—Mr. David Grey (chairman), in the loss of his brother-in. law, Mr. Geo. H. Williams; Mr. Rees (deputy clerk), in the loss of his brotheri Mr. Llew. Williams in the loss of a sonj and with the relatives of Mr. D. R* Davies, accountant clerk. On a vote, Miss E. Warren, Waunar. Iriydd, was appointed assistant matron tt the Cottage Homes.
