I FINANCIAL NEWS.
I FINANCIAL NEWS. j £ 1 WORTH 15s. IN DOLLARS. There was a further very .sharp ad- verse movement in the New York ex- change which closed at$3.88 £$3.88f after touching;$3,874, making ihe value in dollars of the £ 1 currency note only [ about 15s. The tranc azain depreciated Pans closing at 40f. 03c. 40f. 08c., and the mark also fell. Madrid continued tor I move agamst us, closing at 19p. 121, as I did Switzerland, which closed at 20f. 95c. 21f. GOLD AND SILVER. -1 I- I me price or bar silver rose a further Id. to 74J. per ounce for cash and 734-1 for future delivery. Owing to the wcak- ner-s of the American exchange supplies were very limited and the amount of business passing was small. I lnere was no change in the once of bar gold, which remained nt 106s. 8d. per ounce. The bulk of the amount available in the market was taken for I the Continent. I DECREASED GOLD PRODUCTION. .11 ?7 .me inew 101k exchange yesterday c losed at$3.88|, which (says the Times ") makes the value in dollars of the £1 currency note only about Ks. There was no further rise in 'he price of gold yesterday, but the New York exchange has now reached a figure which shows that a further advance i; not im- probable. At 106s. 8d. per fine oz. the paper premium on gold is 25 per cent., and the discount on sterling in dollars is already slightly more than that. It is probably not generally realised* that the production of gold during the war period has steadily decreased, and de- creased further this year. The falling off is substantial enough to be a factor in the rise in price. BRITISH TOBACCO CO. (AUS- I TRALIA), LTD. Cable advice has been received from Sydney that the directors of British ?oi)acco Co. (Australia), Ltd., have de- clared an interim diivdend of 3 per cent. on the Ordinary shares, payable on the 31??t instant. NOTABLE INSURANCE VENT. I The appointment of Sir Gerald Ryan, Bart., as chairman of the Phoenix Assur- ance Company in succession to Lord George Hamilton has aroused great in- terest in insurance circles. Sir Gerald Ryan's success in his management of a great and varied business such as the Phoenix has been phenomenal, as, al- though he was an eminent actuary, it re- quired exceptional ability and breadth of view to bring a composite insurance concern to such a high state of efficiency and success. That he has succeeded should point the way to those working in lower branches of the business as to the possibilities of merit and ^plication. It is moreover quite exceptional for a general manager still on the rctive list to assume the chairmanship of an insur- ance company, although not unusual for a manager, on his retirement, to be ap- pointed as director in recognition of past services. The retirement of Lord George Hamilton after his long association with 4 the Phoenix during its eventful progre^sj ."1 will probably not cause surprise when his sustained and distinguished public career is reviewed. This necessitates his severance from the most exacting of I his City engagements. I I AT THE DOCKS. I I KING'S DOCK. jARRIY AJB,Hurnhopo a 1602, Barry I Dock; Paul Paix s 2451. Calais. TO-NIGHT'S BIG BOUT.I
TO-NIGHT'S BIG BOUT. I I GREAT ENTHUSI ASM IN FRANCE. PAEIS, Thursday. Never in the history of sport in France was there so much cnthu siasm over a boxing contest as on the occasion of the Carpentier- Beckett fight. Several of tho newspapers will announce the result as soon as it is received by sending up different coloured rockets to denote the winner. Betting in Paris is greatly, in favour of Carpentier.— I Exchange. I I Georges Carpentier, driving a ev for the French Flying Corps.— (Photo by N.I.).
