[ HOUSING BILL. 0 Dr. Addison Justifies Subsidy. The Housing (Additional Powers) Bill was read a third time in the lIouSø of Commons en Friday. Mr. Tyson Wikon (Lab.) objected to the principle of giving a subsidy to builders. In his opinion the Minister would have been more usefully em- ployed in breaking up the rings which held up building materials and con- trolled the tenders. This Bill would only* subsidise the trusts, rings, and com- bines. WAGES QUESTION. Moreover, the "workmen would at once demand more wages, because builders had this subsidy. He could 6ee trouble coming in the building trade. Dr. Addison said a schedule showing the prices of materials at different periods was being prepared. There liad been a good deal of exaggeration, though it was the c.Ase tliit the rise in price of many materials had won appalling. If, a-s Mr. Wilson said, the Bill was 1 alvortive and did not produce- lioiics, then nobody could get the subsidy. All he was concerned about was to get the houses, and ho believed this Bill would lead to the provision of a large number of houses of quite good character. The Bill was then read a third time.
