WELSH RECORD ! HOLDERS. j
WELSH RECORD HOLDERS. j • I „ • Swansea' s Task. CAN ALL WHITES i BEAT NEWPORT? ) (By PENDRAGON.") j Will Newport lose their record? The fact that they ite the only unbeaten team in Wales has imparted exceptional in- terest to their Swansea visit, and it will surprise me if the gate" is not the biggest produced by a llugby match in the Principality since pre-war days. It ia evident from the way in which the pros- pects are being discussed that the amateur game retains its popularity, and that a victory tor the All Whites is not only de- sired, but in a. good many caises expocted. J udge-d on the basis of what has been ac- complished by the two teams this season, Newport ought to win. There ib. how- ever, the aspect that when the Westerners played at the liodney i'aiade last month they were unlucky to lose by a converted goal. The tour 01 Cambridge University provided an interesting ttudy in contrasts, lor wluie bwauMja out, defeated tup Light Hlues by slx point* to liuee, Newiwrt two days later piled 0,40 points to eight against them. A REMARKABLE RECORD. I That Newport have put up a remarkable record this season cannot be doubted. The other day tii.c-y were rather foolishly compared with Graham's invinciblcs. They, are a good side, but they owe much of tneir tiuccess to the fact that while they have been able to retain many of the men who won fame in 1913-14, their opponents have been obliged £ <> go in for a policy of re-construction. Swansea, for instance, have only one of their pre-war back13ell Beynon. They have had recourse to many experiments, but with Bennett shaping well at inside-half, and Rowel Lewis and W. Bowen ready to resume, the situation 13 easier. The All Whites' pack is prob- ably the best in Wales. Against Cam- bridge and the some of the for- wards were rested in order that they should be fit and well for to-morrow. SPECIAL TRAINING. j Seldom have the Swansea pla>«ers looked forward to a match with greater enthu- siasm. This week they Trent in fot^s-pecial training. There is a quiet confidence among them which makes one think that the Newport record is not going to sur- vive. The task is a formidable one, but as the team looks better balanced than has been the case in any other match this season, a surprise may be looked for. It is intt-re.sting to recall that when Swansea at Newport there was a. pointless first half. The winning score came through I Bell a quarter ot au hour before the end, Fred liirt -converting. A feature of the game was the display given by Joe Kees, ) the Swansea full-back. His tackling was a revelation to the Newportians, who bad never before seen him in action. PERSONALITIES. I With tho exception of Morgan and ) iiammott, the Newport backs were all well-known in iirst-cjass iootball before I the war. Wetter, the inside-half, dKKji<i( play against "Swansea in the last match, but Deane, who deputised him was, as it happened, the best man in thûNmvport back division. The Usksiderp have a dangerous wing in Morgan, and Hammett, a convert from Association, has been serv- ing them well in the centre. Phunmer, Birt and Martin arf, of course, well- known to all of us; and so alo are Percy JOlWS and ?zxeU. The Whites should bold an advantage forward, but much will depend upon the way- in which the three-quarters shape. It will Ix:, for the most part, a case of youth against experi- ence. A CORRESPONDENT'S VIEW. I I have received the following from a cor- respondent who signs himself Old Sport" —" Dear l'endragon,'—While the great question is—" Will Swansea beat Newport?"—as one who saw the Whites I in their last match at the Rodney Parade, and, by the way, not forgetting the great excitement of the Newport spectators on the occasion of Newport* scoring, it ap- peared to us Swansea boys that the Usk- sidors felt that as long as we can beat you, our record is safe.' Still we didn't deserve to lose, and I say, without doubt, that with a completo team and a rise to the occasion, victory is ours. Newport's idea is a clean sporting game, so one can anticipate a. rare, clean, hard game-a jjjame worth going many miles to see. On Newport's form last Saturday, it certainly look's as though Swansea have a poor chance of taking their record, but as I say, we are going to have a surprise, which will prove the Whites are still a formid- I able and crack team, and can still give ns Swansea boys something of which to bo proud. It would be a very acceptable Christmas present to see Newport's record interred at St. Helen's.* ANOTHER UNBEATEN SipE. The visit of Amman United to Gower- ton on Saturday next will prove a great attraction to local enthusiasts, us the former hold an linbehton i-ecori-I for this season. The last time these two teams met was at Ammanford this season, when Oowerton played one of their best games of the seasou, and were decidedly unlucky to return loser.-) by a try. It. is expected I that Eddie IT ill will make his api>earanco oft the Gowerton side for the iirst time this season, having suffered from knee trouble through an injury sustained whilst play- ing lad seaSOn. SWANSEA ALBIONS. I At a special meeting of the Swansea Albions, held at the Pantygwydr Hotel, Mr. G. Cuss?-cU, of 22, S? HclcH's-road. was appointed the Siew secretary. It was decided to hold a drive at the Hotel Metropule on February 19th. In the Albion's match against the Swansea Police. on Thursduy, the result wls:- Albions, 3; Police, 1. W.R.'J. SUSPENSIONS. I Tht Welsh Union met at thû Qwn's Hotel, Cardiff, on Thursday evening, Mr. Horace S. Lyne, Newport, presiding, and doalt with the following matches;- Llangennech v.
