I RAPID BUILDING. Caswell Wooden Cottage Experiment. The imperative need for housi.,g ac- commodation, and the difficulty and delay being experienced in erecting dwellings of the brick and mortar type, prompted a Swansea, firm--Ilestrs. Wm. Thams and Sons. timber merchant's, -Swingea-to ex- periment with wooden cottages of the bungalow type, and a Leader" rtpre- sentative visited Gaswell, where a com- pleted specimen was vipwed. £ 300 EACH. I The cottage is one of three types, and I its total eo?t. fully equipped with water and gaw laid on. is estimated- to be < £ 300. It measures 49ft. by 15, and is situated on sloping ground, concrete slabs being used for the foundation. The house was hunt in sections, and only required bolt- iii- together, so that once the foundations are in it is only a matter of a few hour.; before the house is un. The accommodation includes two bed- rooms, living room, scullery, bathroom, lardor and pantry and vestibule, and it is claimed that the life of the cottage can be reasonably put down as long as that of 'I' an ordinary house. A SINGLETON SUGGESTION. I The firm have suggested to the Swan- sea Housing Committee that they erect 100 or 200 of these on Singleton, near the Slcetty tram terminus, and claim that, if they adopted this type of dwelling, over .1.00-0 families could be housed by the Gpring of 19M. A fortnight is all that is required to erect the houses and make them ready for occupation, and in fact the present experimental dwelling is shortly to be occnpMd by Mr W]n. DOCTOR DIFFICULTY. I Swansea Unable to Keep Assistant Medical Officers. I The Swansea Education Medical In- spection Sub-Committee on Monday after- noon considered three applications for the post of assistant medical officer. The ex-mayor (Councillor W. H. Miles) pre- sided. The only applicant able to appear was Dr. T. T. Rankin, Liverpool, who had jiist returned to England after four years in the East, lie was now undecided. Mr. Ivor Gwynhe wanted to know what was wrong with Swansea if they were un- able to retain assistant medical officers; and applicants were always cancel- ling their applications. There must be something wrong. So what W8,¡S the remedy? It was quite a disgrace to the town that appli- cants who did come to Swansea usually left. It could not be a question of housing alone. Dr. Rankin, recalled, said the advertise- ment had led him to believe that the ap- pointment was quite a new one. He found, however, that the work principaII3 involved medical inspection of school- children. H? had imagined there would have been some opportunity for study of bacteriology, etc. The chairman thought that the crux of j the question was thai there was a dearth j of doctors and plenty of vacancies. I Dr. Rankin was given a week to con- j sider his decision. There were two names before the Com- mittee for the. post of health visitor, and Miss Rees (Maesteg), who is now at Cinderford doing health visiting work wfts appointed.

You have All read or heard of the great effort being made to get up £ 10,000 tor the Widows" and Orphans' Fund, and I want you to help on Christinas Day. Some of the children w ho wilt benefit j by that Fund have, at times, written little letters to the Corner," and es- pecially when they were on hblidays et the Holiday Home in Govver-so you know they are part of our own big family. -i Now, on Christmas Day, we ask you to make a collection in your own homes to help the fund. It does not matter how much, or how little, you collect—the more the merrier, of course; it will be very ac- ceptable.
