THE TICKINGS OF THE LLANDUDNO OLD CHURCH CLOCK. To the Editor of the North Wales Chronicle. u Sir,—I have not written to you for a long time, ivir. Editor, and I am not going to write a long letter now; but I want to ask a question as to those houses which have been lately built on the road leading to Bryn-y-big. I hear that there are some very good houses there, but then they are so very far from the town. Now, what I want to know is simply this. Why does not some one run an omnibus between thfe market placd our Mr. Felwu's ? Who- ever would do so must make money, and there are plenty of people who during the season would like to use such an omnibus itrespective of those living in the new houses. There are many who would be glad to go out in the morning, round about tne Little Orme and its neighbourhood, for a few hours, and return by the omnibus, It would certainly be a new source of amuse- ment during the season, and would at the same time pay well whoever carried the scheme out. Perhaps some four-horse proprietors will think over this. While I am on the subject of amnsement, I should like to ask what has become of that proposed cricket club, which our great gun, Sir Walter Riddell, said we ought to get up ? The worthy baronet don't know our good old Welsh nature. When his ancestors came once into Wales, some hundreds of years since, to take away from us our beautiful valleys and mountains, they pounded away at us day after day, and week after week. Well, they got tired of pounding away, and then they took themselves off-fairly beat by the stubbornness of our nature. When nature gave us this beautiful place, which might be made into the most glorious seaside place of residence in the world, we were not going to be dictated to by nature, so just as a gentle hiut to that effect we built Bodafon Row, crowded our houses toge- ther, and we keep on to this day shutting out the free air as much as we can. We ain't to be dictated to any more than onr ancestors were, and we ain't going to be made to play cricket against out will. Now, if Sir Walter had asked the ladies to get np a croquet club, that would be quite another sort of a thing. I have often wondered our ladies have not doue it. A croquet club in Llandudno during the season would be a glorious amusement, and i can teii tnose wno nave not seen it that it is pleasant even for an old Church Clock to see a lady playing a croquet, and putting her little foot upon the ball, and pretending that it will slip off again before she can stike. It makes me melancholy Mr. Editor, when I think of such things, and then re- member I can never be anything but an old Church Clock. I feel so vexed that really I must have a turn at the Commissioners. It's not my fault—it's all because I have been thinking of the ladies playing croquet. There was once a lady came home unexpectedly. She found one of her footmen fast asleep on the drawing- room sofa. Why John, what are you doing ? Well, John, quick as he was at the thing, really had not time to concoct au untruth, and was forced to say that he had been doing nothing' Down went the lady into the housekeeper's room. There she found James smoking. Why, James, what have you been doing ? Help- ing John, ma'am," replied James, thinking that his fel- low-servant must have made some excuse. Now for the application At the adjourned meeting of the Commiisioiiers last week, says the Herald, ou being asked for their report as to finding a place for the hearse, the two gentlemen of the Committee present, said they had done nothing; the one excusing himself on the ground of forgetfulness, the other saying he was waiting for Mr. John Williams to state whether the Estate could find a place." Now, Mr. John Williams was not going to see James helping John to do nothing. So the report con. tinues:— Mi-. John Williams said if the two gentlemen would step into the next room, he had something to teU them." I wonder, Mr. Editor, was it only a birch-rod, or was it a horse-whip that was kept in that next room. Every boy that has been to school remembers the cere- mony of "stepping into that next room" with his master, after having forgotten his lesson; and I should not much ike a caning from our John Williams. The finale of the meeting was interesting. "The Commissioners afterwards resolved themselves into a private Committee; but what proved the subject of their deliberations, we did not learn." I should think not, indeed! we have too many "Wanderers," Old men from Mountains," and report- ers prying into our affairs, to suit us. I hear, Mr. Editor, there has been some talk of a Reading-room and Library for the working-classes; that some one wanted to throw it open to all classes, and na- tionalities, but that our glorious Literary Institute would not stand that, and that we are to have it on strictly Welsh principles-that is to say, the English may find the money, if they like, but they shan't have anything to do with it. And why should they ? They don't know our language, or manners; and if they mixed up with us, it would only be ridiculous. Something like a scene I once heard of in a penny theatre in Lan- cashire. They were acting one of Shakespeare s plays. A splendidly-dressed nobleman was to come on the stage, address the King, and state, My lord, Bucking- ham is taken." Well, a shock-headed Lancashire bumb- kin came on the boards, duly dressed up, walked up to the king, and scratching his head, roared out. They's takken Maister Bookenhum." Round turned the king waving his powerful arm-" Han they boy gum, knock un's yead off then."
