In addition to the turbulent and unpromising state of affairs in Portugal, there is likely to be fresh interest excited in this and other countries, by occurrenccs in Spain. A partial insurrection appears to have exploded in some of the Spanish provinces, of a nature somewhat different from the Portuguese movements in favour of absolute power. Neither the one or the otlierwill involve tliis coun- try, without they should exhibit the consistence and importance of national resolves; although the first ctreet of the Spanish intelligence has been appa- rently to delay the final evacuation of Cadiz by thtt l'vench troops.—Whilst the demonstrations of wil- fulness on the part of the Irish Roman Catholics became every day more alarming, we were much surprised at the forbearance of Government, and the apologies and sympathy of some of its mem- bers. In Parliament there have been always found mistaken politicians, and popularity hunting de- claimcrs, who, from the revolution in 1688, down to the present period, have taken part with sedi- tion, and been led on to justify rebellion. The cause of a Popish Pretender, early in the Bruns- wick dynasty, met with encouragement and abet- tors, from amongst both Lords and Commons. The American contest was fanned within this very realm, into the flame that severed those colonies from the parent state. And whatever may have been the practical advantages resulting to either side, the principle of encouragement to rebels is not less generally to be reprobated. The English revolutionary enthusiasts of 1792, 1793 and 171)4, aiming to copy the French jacuWuical example. The Irish republican, and subsequently Popish re bels of 1796, 1797 and 1798, and again of 1803; the English radicals of 1819, the partisans of Queen Caroline, in 1821, all had their theoretical approvers ami powerful abettors, even amongst the Peerage and the Senate. But it was reserved for these later times to witness administrations so ar- ranged as to permit, for the most artful and de, signing men, a show of countenance and support, even from the inmost recesses of the C;lhinct and Privy Council. It might probably be generous and well intentioneil, but we doubt much whether the tendency was not always of a nature fatal, if continued, to the safety of the country. It docs give to such men a powerful appeal to the multi tide, when they can exhibit themselves in inter- course with those who ought only to favor and | associate with characters above suspieian. How- ever the scene is now about tu he changed, seilition will Iw effectually cheeked, treason sp 'edily Un- masked and punished. It would no doaht have been easier to punish agitators in the infancy of their mischievous exertions, so IlS to disable them from leading the cuuntry intu serious dilliculties, and plunging themselves into II treasonable tor- nl. which has canied them out of their depth, iviihout being ahle to bear them to their destined revolutionary port. To our rulers and statesmen, embarrassed as they have been by conflicting par- tics, fur six years amI mort" it has hitherto seemed otherwise. The audacious march of almost autho- rised sedition, has at length united all parties in one common sentiment—the necessity of r,tll:;in2 round the executive government, for the support of the Constitution. We have (though involunta- rily afforded) the C&usolation, and in sOl1le respccts the advantage, that the disaffected have been al- lowed fully to unfold the real objects of their struggle. Good and thinking mell may thus have been prevented from hdn entrapped into their advocaeJ and countenance, and they must be now isolated frrHji those connections, and that protec- tion, i liich they might, if not thus self exposed, have found even to the last acta of turbulent poli- tical existence.

As a classic scholar, she ranked greatly above mediocrity, and few Eng- lislnvmnen have made greater advances in the knowledge of French and Italian. Her applica- tion as a student, and her attention as a teacher, laid the foundation of that debility, which hurried her to an untimely grave.
