BARRY DOCK ENGLISH BAPTIST…
BARRY DOCK ENGLISH BAPTIST SUNDAY SCHOOL ANNIVERSARY. The largest Sunday school in the Barry district is that of the Holton-road English Baptist Church, having on their registers nearly 550 scholars. During the past year about 60 have joined the church after baptism. On Sunday last the eleventh anniversary services of the Sunday school were held, when there was a crowded congregation at each gathering, the pulpit being occupied by the eminently popular devine, the Rev David Davies, of Brighton, who delivered eloquent discourses. In the morning the reverend gentleman, who is the author of the popular volumes, Talks with Men, Women, and Children," and other literary works, confined his remarks to the children, and at the close of the service six Sunday scholars (four males and two females) were baptised by the pastor, the Rev T. Pandy John. Mr W. J. Flower presided at the afternoon service, when a pro- gramme of sacred solos, recitations, &c., was rendered by Misses Beatrice James, J. Emmanuel, C. Heavers, C. Hart, B. Berry, M. Harrison, and L. Camble, and Mr E. Camble. An appropriate address was also delivered by the Rev David Davies, to which the children listened with deep interest and edification. The choir, under the conductorship of Mr F. Farr, rendered anthems at each of the services. The leader of the singing throughout the services was Mr T. S. Williams, and Miss Pitt and Mr G. Rogers presided at the organ.
"JOHN BULL AND HIS ODDITIES."|
"JOHN BULL AND HIS ODDITIES." There was, unfortunately, not a large attend- ance on Monday evening at the lecture delivered by the Rev David Davies on The Whims and Oddities of John Bull." In the absence of Mr Gwyn Morris, the chair was occupied by the Rev T. Pandy John, the pastor of the church. Mr Davies, in the course of an excellent lecture, said the name John Bull was given to the British nation by the humorous Scotchman, John Arbothnot, in the time of George I., 107 years ago. Little did he realise at the time that the designa- tion would cling to the nation. In the various caricatures John Bull was shown in many attitudes, but he was oftener on his knees than the papers gave him credit for, and realised that there was One mightier than he. The British nation allowed itself to be caricatured as no other nation did. As represented by Punch, which owed its origin to a Welsh villager, John was the best- fed man in the world, therefore at Christmas time, in proportion to other countries, he consumed far more beef and poultry. England could colonise as no other country could, because the Government of the people was of a more righteous character than that of any other nation on God's earth. (Hear, hear). One of the failings of John Bull, however, was that his wine cellar was the largest in the world. Many doctors were to blame for this, because they recommended alcoholic liquors for medicinal purposes but now he (the lecturer) was glad to say that medical science was so far advanced that alcoholic beverages were no longer a necessity for any ailment. John Bull was like- wise a great lover of force, and was oftener more forcible than persuasive in his arguments, and here his Celtic origin made itself manifest, more particularly as regards the Welsh and Irish con- stituents of the nation, who were always fond of a row. In referring to the recent Peace Treaty between Briton and Boer, Mr Davies said the rejoicing were indeed Peace rejoicings, being very expressive and characteristic of the national senti- ment, and were the leaders of the enemy to visit this country they would be most cordially received by the whole of tlrS people, (Hear, hear). John Bull was not a lover of injustice, and behind his many failings was the rock of principle, the love of God and of man. (Cheers).—The lecture closed with the singing of a hymn, and the pronounce- ment of the benediction.
ENTERTAINMENT.
ENTERTAINMENT. Mr A. C. Abel, Cardiff, presided over a large attendance at the entertainment held in the Schoolroom on Wednesday evening, when the whole of the programme was taken part in by three parties of girls and one party of boys, who had been specially trained by Miss Armstrong, Miss Brown, Miss Beatrice James, and Mr W. H. James. The children went through various action songs, &c, in a most creditable manner, being several times heartily encored.

VICAR FILLINGHAM AND HIS BISHOP.
VICAR FILLINGHAM AND HIS BISHOP. HIS VISIT TO BARRY LAST YEAR. The Rev R. C. Fillingham, vicar of Hexton, who preached at Holton-road English Baptist Chapel, Barry Docks, last year, and afterwards went to America on a mission for the Boers, was inhibited by the Bishop of Worcester from preaching as announced in a Nonconformist chapel in Worcester on Sunday last. He defied the Bishop, and preached two sermons in the chapel. He prefaced his sermon in the morning by saying that he had invited the Bishop to attend the service to show his reputed broad-mindedness, but the Bishop had written a letter saying he must prohibit him from preaching. He (Mr Fillingham) had written to the Bishop pointing out that illegal practices were at present permitted in many churches in the city of Worcester, and offering if those were prohibited to abstain from preaching in that church of the Countess of Huntingdon's,
