DINAS POWIS. LIBERAL COLLECTION.—A big collection was made at Dinas Powis Wesleyan Methodist Chapel on Sunday last, in aid of the debt and the organ fund, the total amount collected during the morn- ing and evening being £ 902. It appears that the Dinas Powis Wesleyans, wishing to free their pretty edifice (which was opened a year ago) from its debt of £ 750, resolved to hold a bazaar next autumn. One evening the bazaar committee met to discuss details, and at the meeting one of the members, moved by a fortunate impulse, went for U bazaars and snch-like methods unreservedly. The result was a proposal to raise the amount by subscription. About J6600 was promised on the spot, and later it was agreed that, instead of the usual lists the money should be placed on the plate at the anniversary on Sunday. The collection, as already stated, reached £ 902.

BARRY MAN'S SAD DEATH. FATAL ADMINISTRATION OF CHLOROFORM AT CARDIFF INFIRMARY. A labourer named Charles Duckham, aged 30, of Barry, died ut Cardiff Infirmary on Thursday last whilst being operated upon for an internal complaint. He was und^r the influence of chloroform at the time. Duckham was a married man. An inquest was held on the body on Friday afternoon at the Town Hall. The body was identified by the deceased's wife.—Dr Davies, senior anesthetist at Cardiff Infirmary, said that Duckham was suffering from a rapture, and it was found necessary to perform an operation. Before chloroform was administered the patient was carefully examined by Dr Timms, the house physician, who described his heart to be sound, but he had a rather bad cough. Witness adminis- tered two drachms of anasstehtic, which was a very small amount, and witness, assisted by a nurse, wheeled the patient into the operating theatre, and there placed him on the operating table. Even then his condition seemed satisfactory, for he was breathing fairly regularly. Up to this time nothing had been done to the patient, whose breathing now suddenly became irregular, although no more of the anassthetic had been given. Witness immediately called for Dr Samuel, and they together commenced giving him artificial respiration. This seemed to restore him at first, but he soon relapsed, and his breathing stopped altogether. Dr William Sheen, who was preparing to perform the operation, also went to their assistance, and, finding that artificial respiration had failed, he cut a hole in his throat to induce the heart's action, but this was of no avail, and the man died. Dr Davies subsequently made a post-mortem examination. The organs were very much congested, which, in his opinion, was due to the mode of death.-The Coroner If he had not been put under chloroform the man might have lived ?—Dr Davies Yes, sir he died from paralysis of the respiration of the centres, as the result of chloroform.—The jury returned a verdict that death wasdue to the paralysis of the respiratory centres and the heart while-under the influence of chloroform. Deceased was a member of the Salvation Army at Barry Docks. The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon at Cardiff, when Captain Moss, S.A., Barry Docks, conducted the burial service.

MR. T. MARCHANT WILLIAMS ON "HOWELL HARRIS." There was a numerous attendance at Bethel Presbyterian Chapel, Court-road, Barry Docks, on Wednesday evening last, when Mr T. Marchant Williams, M.A., B.A.L., the stipendiary magistrate for Merthyr, delivered a lecture on Howell Harris, the eminent Welsh reformer. Councillor W. J. Williams, Parkside, Barry, presided, and having introduced the lecturer, Mr Marchant Williams delivered his address. Howell Harris, he said, was born at Trevecca in the year 1714. He was a man of masterful and impulsive disposition, quick- tempered, and wholly incapable of finesse, He opened a school when but eighteen years of age, but was in the field as an itinerant preacher before either of the Wesleys or George Whitfield. The country was then in a state of apathy so far as religion was concerned. Most of the services were held in English. Harris considerably altered the existing state of things, and his name became known throughout the Principality. The clergy denounced him as a false prophet, the magistrates committed him for trial for brawling, and his friends deserted him, but Harris lived through it all. He travelled as much as 150 miles a week and preached two or more sermons a day. He had a larger gift of natural oratory than any other man of that generation. He was rejected for holy orders, because, he states, he was considered an enemy to the Church. He, however, lived and died a member, and conformed to the rites and ceremonies of the Established Church. He preached till he could preach no longer, and his spirit was completely broken. A rupture was formed between him and his fellow preachers, which lasted for practically the rest of his life. He married on the 18th of June, 1844. but his after life was not so eventful as before he was married. When Howell Harris died thousands of persons followed his remains to the grave to pay a last tribute of respect to one of the greatest and noblest men that Wales has ever produced.-On the proposition of the Rev John Owen, seconded by Mr C. Howe, Mr Marchant Williams was heartily thanked for his address and a vote of thanks was also passed to the Chairman for presiding.

There was a time, too, when the Presbyterians would not have in their churches a kist of whistles," meaning an organ. Thank God the ideas and beliefs of those days are passing away.
