APPOINTMENT FOR A FORMER RESIDENT.—We are pleased to learn that Mr Walter Hosgood, of Port Talbot, formerly of Barry, has just obtained an important appointment, that of locomotive superintendent at Rhodesia, and sailed for South Africa a few days ago. LABOURERS' UNION MEETING. — A special meeting of the Nos. 1 and 2 Branches of the National Amalgamated Labourers' Union of Great Britain and Ireland will be held at the Bassett Arms Hotel, Barry Docks, on Saturday evening next, at seven p.m., for the transaction of important business. NARROW ESCAPE.-On Saturday last a foreigner named Bernard Finnimore, a boatswain, fell from a plank while endeavouring to board a vessel in the dock. When rescued he was in a semi- conscious condition, and was removed to the Town Accident Hospital, where he was attended and detained. SPIRITUALISM.—Mr E. S. G. Mayo, of Cardiff, will be the speaker next Sunday, May 14th, at the Alexandra Hall (ground floor), corner of Newland- street and Woodland-road, Barry Docks. RUNAWAY HORSE.—On Wednesday last a horse belonging to Messrs Thomas Bro3., hay and corn merchants, Thompson-street, bolted in Regent- street, Barry Docks, and the cart, striking a tree on the side of the street, tore the guard and tree cut of the ground. The driver, Thomas Elliott, a youth, of 3, Beatrice-road, Cadoxton, was thrown out of the cart, sustaining injuries to his head. Elliott, who was suffering from shock, was attended by Dr W. Lloyd Edwards, and conveyed to his home. BUTTRILLS-ROAD METHODIST FREE CHURCH. -On Sunday last trust sermons were preached at the Methodist Free Church, Buttrills-road, Barry Docks, in the morning by the Rev R. Ashby Howe, pastor, and in the evening by the Rev T. B. Saul, Cardiff. A musical service was held in the afternoon, at which Mr F. W. Poole presided, and an effective address was delivered by the Rev Ben Evans. Solos were rendered by Miss Florrie Winter and Miss Francis Rimron, with a pleasing selection also by Mr Griff Griffiths' Quartette Party. IMPORTANT SALE OF PROPERTY.-On Thursday evening next, the 18th inst., Mr J. T. WESLEYAN CHURCH ANNIVERSARY,—Anniver- sary services were held at Barry Wesleyan Church en Sunday last, and proved a great success. In the morning the Rev R. Bond, Penarth, preached, and in the evening the Rev W. W. Treleaven, Penarth, the sermons being eloquent, inspiring, and im- pressive, and the congregations large. Miss Lottie Wakelin, L.R.C.M., Cardiff, and Mr Harry Miller, Llandaff, rendered solos at the evening service. There was also a good congregation in the after- noon, when an enjoyable musical service was held. The artistes were Miss C. Stark, Cardiff (soprano) Miss Lottie Wakelin, L.R.C.M., Cardiff (contralto); baas, Mr Harry Miller, Llandaff Cathedral and Mr D. Hopkins, Barry (tenor) and, Mr S. F. Deyes, Cardiff (the organist). Mr W. L. Hughes presided. The service was of a bright and inter- esting character and the choir and artistes sang exceedingly well, the following being the pro- gramme :-Chorus, I will call upon the Lord" (Mozart's 12th Mass), Choir solo, Mr D. Hopkins organ solo, Mr S. F. Deyes solo, The Promise of Life (Cowen), Miss C. Stark; chorus, 0 Glad- some Light (Sullivan), Choir solo, The Good Shepherd (Barro), Miss L. Wakelin chorus, In the sweet by and bye (Protberoe), Male Voices solo, Life's Recompense" (Del. Riego), Miss C. Stark; chorus, "Gloria" (Mozart's 12th Mass), Choir solo and quartette, Art thou weary ? (Reid). Misses C. Stark and L. Wakelin, Messrs D. Hopkins and R. Phillips; and chorus, The Heavens are telling" (Haydn's Creation"), Choir. The collections were in aid of the trust funds.

DINAS POWIS. NEW ORGAN AT THE WESLEYAN CHAPEL.—A handsome organ, which has been erected at the new Wesleyan Chapel at Dinas Powis, was formally opened last week by Mrs Victor Harrison, Mr Harrison being a liberal contributor towards the cost of the instrument. A recital was given by Mr 3. E. Deacon, of Cardiff, when a. 1. the capabilities of the instrument were shown to ø, large congregation. Miss Lottie Wakelin, L.R.C.M., Cardiff, was the soloist. The organ has been erected at a cost of £ 400, and at the evening ceremony a suitable presentation was ¡ made to Mr Frank Hocken in recognition of his services as organist and choirmaster.

PEN MARK. CORRECTION.—In our last issue we stated that William Thomas, sub-postmaster, Penmark, had been fined 29 Sd for allowing his donkey to stray on the highway. This was an error it should have been William Thomas, acting postman at Llancarfan.

LECKWITH. EASTER VESTRY.-The Easter Vestry for the parishes of Cogan, Llandough, and Leckwith was held on Friday evening last at Leckwith, the Rev F. E. Williams, M.A., rector, presiding. The accounts, showing a substantial balance, having been adopted, Mr W. R. Shirley was elected rector's warden, and Mr F. Davies people's warden.—It was decided to increase the grant from Leckwith to the curates' fund by A2, making £12; Llandough contributing £20.

CARDIFF. FREEDOM OF THE COUNTY BOROUGH.—The Cardiff Corporation have accepted the tender of Mr H. B. Crouch, the well-known jeweller, &c., of St. Mary's-atreet and Queen-street, Cardiff, for the supply of the silver casket in which the scroll of the freedom of the County Borough will be pre- sented to H.R.H. the Prince of Wales on the occasion of his visit to Cardiff next month. The casket will be of an exceedingly handsome description. MESSRS BEVAN AND COMPANY, LIMITED.— The fifteenth annual report and financial statement of Messrs Bevan and Company, Limited, the Cardiff Furnishers, has just been issued, showing a net profit for the year of £ 3,526 after providing for adequate reserve, the total amount available for dividend being j63,563 12s 5d. An interim dividend of 7 per cent. on preference shares had been paid, and 5 per cent. on the ordinary shares, and final dividends at the same respective rates had been declared, carrying forward the balance to next year's account.

MRS. GRUNDY'S JOTTINGS. The traffic receipts on the Barry Railway, including the Vale of Glamorgan Railway, last week amounted to £12,415, a decrease compared with the corresponding week of last year of I £ 1,387. Aggregate decrease, £ 21,384. The romance of the seas. I am informed by Observer that channel cruises have a tendency to reduce the rate of bachelorship and old- maidship in the Barry district. it It is understood that, in order to devote himself more fully to his ministerial duties, the Rev T. Pandy John will not seek re-election as member of the Barry District Council next year. j The Rev J. S. Longdon, M.A., rector of Cadoxton-Barry, and Mrs Longdon have proceeded on a three weeks' holiday to the Continent. An extra passenger train from Barry to Cardiff is being run every night, leaving Barry at 10.34. Channel cruises are becoming all the rage. Last Saturday evening the Barry passenger steamer Gwalia, which, with her sister-ship the Devonia, are the pride of the Bristol Channel, went for a cruise, having on board 1,400 passengers, the largest number she is allowed to carry. Hundreds were unable to get on board. A young man and young woman went out in a pleasure boat at Penarth last Sunday evening for a cruise in the Channel, and one of the rowlocks falling overboard, they were unable to return, and drifted down Channel, where they were picked up the same night by a Bideford smack in Barry Roads, and transferred to the tugboat Briton, of Cardiff, being landed at Barry early Monday morning. Major-General Lee, J.P., Dinas Powis, has generously promised a donation of J6500 towards the building fund of £20,000 of St. Michael's Theological College, Llandaff. Lord Windsor has also promised £ 1,000, and Colonel the Hon. G, W. H. Windsor Clive £200. The district rate for the parish of St. Andrew's Major (Dinas Powis) for next half-year will be 2s 10d in the P., as against 3s Id in the £ for last half year. It is understood that negotiations are proceeding between representatives of the Progressive and Sectarian parties on the Barry District Council with the view of bringing about a mutual arrangement which will obviate the necessity for holding a public inquiry by the Beard of Education in relation- to the administration of St. Helen's Roman Catholic School by the Education Authority. An extraordinary scene was witnessed last Saturday evening as the train, containing the hundreds of passengers bound for the popular boat trip to Weston entered Barry Station. Heads, shoulders, arms, legs, and in some cases half the bodies, were observed protruding from the carriage windows in the general eagerness to get out to the boat, and presented altogether a curious and amusing sight. # Hello, here comes the cattle train from Cadoxton and Barry Dock I shouted one precocious youth. This was quickly taken up by the waiting throng of passengers, and created no end of amuse- ment. Needless to say there was no room for any more" boarders," and the train proceeded on its journey to the pier, Overheard in Holton-road. Elector (to a friend) There was a time when the Barry District Council could say, We look the whole world in the face, and fear not any man." The other Aye man, but they seem to blush now, when they look at the ratepayers." The members of the John Mandeville" Branch of the United Irish League have passed a resolution congratulating Councillor Dr P. J. O'Donnell on his election by the District Council as one of the managers of St. Helen's Roman Catholic School. The Barry Railway Bill having been passed by the House of Lords, it is now being considered by the House of Commons Committee as an unopposed measure. The hearing of the Barry divorce case will pro- bably be opened to-day (Thursday).
