---CAPTAIN OF BARRY CRICKET…
MR. ARTHUR OSBORNE. CAPTAIN OF BARRY CRICKET CLUB. Everything indicates a very successful season for the Barry Cricket Club. and with such a dis- tinguished player as Mr Arthur Osborne as captain, these indications should be fully realised. Mr Osborne, who is only 28 years of age, showed a wonderful knowledge of the game when a mere nipper." His first club was in connection with the Modern School, South Shields, and having revealed promising signs of good form and play, Arthur was honoured by a place in the South Shields Club when only fifteen years old. For this team he figured prominently, and, before reaching the age of twenty, was several times chosen reserve for Durham County, and he would probably have been selected as a county player had he been a little older. Osborne then came to Barry, and he was at once invited to join the ranks of the Penarth Club, for which he has played six seasons. His name soon became well known throughout South Wales; and Glamorgan County Club has found him for the past four seasons, a player of rare worth in all departments of the game. As a batsman Mr Osborne has proved a veritable stone wall to many a trundler. In 1901, playing at Cardiff for Glamorganshire against Monmouth, he made a fine stand with H. E. Morgan, compiling 110 runs off his own bat, the patnership of these two players realising 400 runs. The same season he scored 109 runs against Berkshire for Glamorgan. Bowling for the County against the Philadelphians last year in two days) playing, he took eleven wickets, and against Monmouth at Swansea captured four wickets for five runs in one innings, and five wickets for four in another, He was second in the bowling averages for the County last season, and top for the Penarth Club, who will feel his loss greatly this year. On a sticky wicket Mr Osborne is deadly. He delivers a left handed leg break ball at medium pace, but is a right handed batsman. He is also a very safe fielder. Mr Osborne is sanguine of a very successful time for the Barry Club this season. With such a "skipper," possessing such a record, and the inclusion of several other valuable men, nothing should prevent this being realised to the full.
CADOXTON-BARRY CRICKET CLUB.
DR. E. J. H. BUDGE. CADOXTON-BARRY CRICKET CLUB. THE POPULAR CAPTAINCY OF DR. BUDGE. The members of Cadoxton-Barry Cricket Club could not have made a wiser or more popular selection than they did when they chose Dr E. J, H. Budge as their captain for the coming season, as there are few gentlemen at Barry who have a better knowledge of the game than Dr Budge. His fame as a wicket-keeper is known, not only at Barry, but in Cardiff, Penarth, and elsewhere. Commencing his career at his native village of Crewkerne, in Somersetshire, he played for the school eleven with much success, and afterwards assisted the town team. His smartness behind the stumps and rare steadiness with the bat also earned for him a place in Guy's Hospital team (London), and during the time he played for the Hospital they won no less than three cups. On coming to Barry to enter upon the practice of his professson, Dr Budge was chosen by Penarth Club as wicket-keepe-r, a position he occupied for several seasons. Dr Budge invariably assists Cardiff Medicals, for whom he has made several big scores, and he has frequently played for the Cardiff premier eleven. When the Cadoxton-Barry Club was formed last season, Dr Budge decided to throw in his lot with them, and he has proved of invaluable service to the team, hence his selection as captain this year. Dr Budge's highest individual score is 74, obtained whilst playing for Crewkerne School but he secured the splendid average of 26 when wearing Guy's Hospital colours. Dr Budge has been abroad, and had the unique experience of wielding the willow in far-off Shanghai in a match between English residents there. Once, while playing in London, he batted right through an innings for 14 runs (not out) out of a total of 118 and has always been known for his steady batting displays. He is very sanguine of a successful season for Cadoxton-Barry this year. Dr Budge is a model wicket-keeper, standing fearlessly to the fastest of bowlers and rarely misses a chance at stump or catch. Cricket to Dr Budge is true sport, and he is one of the best exponents of the game at Barry.
