SOMETHING FOR YOUNG FOLKS. J A MISCHIEVOUS MONKEY. Some years ago, on board a ship coming from Jamaica, there was among the passengers a lady with a very young baby. The captain of the ship owned a large monkey, which was made rather | a pet of by the sailors. One morning, as the mother was taking her baby for an airing on deck, the captain, who was looking at a ship in the distance, asked her if she would care to look a)t it through his glass. The lady laid the little child down on a comfortable chair, and took the glass from the captain. A moment later she heard an exclamation from one of the sailors, and, turning round, saw that the monkey had picked up her baby, and was climb- ing the mast with it as fast he he could go. He held the baby firmly with one arm, whiie ;he used the other and his feet for climbing, The mother was speechless with terror, and the cap- tain and sailors were much alarmed, Some of the men, who could, of course, climb as we.l as the monkey, tried to follow him up tha rigging, but the monkey watched them and went higher up, and they were afraid that he might drop the child as soon as they got close to him. Presently tiab baby began to cry, and the mon- key imitated the nurse by soothing and caressing it, and trying, apparently, to get it to sleep. A great many plans were tried to indueethe mon- key to bring the little one down, but all failed, and the mother fainted with fright. At laat the captain ordered all the men to con- ceal themselves below, and he himself hid in a place where he could see all that was going on without being seen. This plan succeeded, for the monkey, supposing himself no longer watched, gave up his game, began to climb do?, and was Joon on th? deck again, where he laid the baby on the ohair from which he had taken .t, and made off aa if to ewMQ^punishonent. The 3 was given back to iti§ mother, who not to hi it out of her øigbt for th. raft of t>v roygm.
