I.RHONDDA ITEMS. !
I. RHONDDA ITEMS. A plot of land comprising 3o square I yards, required for the widening of a bridge at Tonypandy, is estimated to cost L230. A weil-attended meeting of f iends of ex-Councillor Gwiiym Rowlands was hehi at Tabor Chapel, Penygraig, on Tuesday evening, the 18th inst., to present him with a cheque for 100 guineas in appre- j c:at;on of his services for the last six years on the Rhondda District Council. Mr Rom lands 1 is the unde of Judge Rowland Rowlands, and the prc-spective Conservative candidate for the Rhondda. The Rev. W. A. Jenkins, Congregation- al minister, Blaenrh ;ndca, has accepted an unanimous call from Cwmdare Con- gregational Church. He will start h's new ministry early in the new year. Mr S. T. Jones, Tylorstown, has been selected treasurer tor the Rhoutlda. La- bour and Liberal Association (East and West), in the place of Mr A. Cule, JP Ystrad, who has resigned through ill- health. The Tylorstown War Relief Fund has been wound up. At a public meeting it was stated zLS98 9s Gd. had been distri- buted this year, making a total of £ 3,000 since 1916. Mr S.T.Jones has been pre- sented by the committee of the fund with an illuminated address for his services as treasurer, while Mr Thomas J. Da vies, secretary of the Federation Lodge. has been given an inscribed gold watch for his services as chairman. It has been decided to raise a fund with the object of endowing a bed at the Portli Cottage Hospital in memory of the late Dr. Carroll, who during his 20 years' residence in the district was ex- tremely popular. The amount required is about £ 2,000. It is anticipated that the colliery workmen and employers will help substantially in view of the fact that Dr. Carroll had rendered free of charge va lu- able services in regard to accidents at the local pits. Captain Tom Williams, son of Mr John Williams, Trealaw, who was aitided to Mr T. Mill ward, solicitor, Pentie, was one of the successful candidates at the recent final examination of the Incorporated Law Society. Capt. Williams joined the army early in 1914, and saw active service iu France and Italy. Sir Walter Nicholas, who continues to make satisfactory progress towards recov- ery after his operation, is still at :1, Cardiff nursing home, where he will pro- bably remain for a few days longer.

ARE BABIES DEAR? 9 MOTHER answers "of course," )\/j with a strong inflexion of surprise that the question should even be mentioned.. But the word "dear" is used with another meaning, and the question is net ours, but that of several writers in the Press who have been pointing out how much more it costs to keep a baby to-day. Baby's clothes, baby's pram, baby's medicines, and even baby's milk are all costing more It becomes an iimportast matter then to Me that baby gets full value for the I money spent, especially in the matter of food. There's a great deal can be saved on that alone. Take milk, foT instance. It is a fact that milk food is the best; in fact, is the only food v for baby if mother can't feed baby herself. But. what aort of milk food? Ordinary cow's milk either fresh, powdered or condensed, isn't, a natural food for human b&biae, A baby isn't a calf. A calf oan easily digest the heavy fats and curds in oows milk, but a baby can't. So milk has to be diluted or weakened. f But that doesn't, make the indiges- tible matter in the milk any more digestible. It stops baby sending it all hack, perhaps, by reducing the weight. But the water that has been added coiitairs no nourishment. Something iiiore ia needed to bring the oow's milk more in line with mother's own milk. This something is Moae- leys Food. It is not only very nourish- ing itself and suppliea ingredients especially helpful for baby's bones and teeth, it modifies the cow's milk and makes it lie lighter on baby's stomach. When you use Moselevs Food you make better food for baby with less milk. And however dear baby is to you in affection you can have no objections to him being less "dear" to keep. And Moseleys Food saves doctor's bills and other troubles, for over and over agtain it has been the saINation of weakly babies, soothing and sustain- ing them when they were actually un- able to keep down the weakest milk and water. Don't hesitate, but be on the safe side. Start baby right with Moseleys Food. And if baby isn't all you think it should be. put it straight away an 0 Humanises Cow's Milk for Baby. Sold by all good Chemists in 9d., 114 & 31• Tins. A handsomely printed, illustrated Baby Book entitled "Moseleys Mothers' Help," containing valuable hints for Mothers, descriptions of Baby Ailments, will be sent post free to any address on receipt of postcard addressed to Nurse Rhos, Moseley Food Co., Westhoughton. The Political Front i
The Political Front i By an V.P. THE GREAT INDISCRETION. I Ihe speech of the Prime Min ster at the M ansion House, which froze his audietict, to silence, was, to put it mildly, unior- lunate. The House of Commons, only four days lwfore had given an emphatic verdict against Bolshevism and M.P.'s were c¡; tinctly rattled to find the Prime Min s'ct flouting them by proposing a re opening üJ the Prinkipo business. fortunate y, the American State de- partment bus announced that "no plan contemplating compromise with the H lb- sian Bolshevist Government would le ap- proved by the United States Government. Further, the U.S. Government would not take part in any conic:t-nce to which Bolshevist representatives were admitted, Is it too much to expect that our Gov- j ernn-ent will give an.equatty explicit j assurance in view of public alarm? FOOLERY. "I" How came it about that whilst our naval forces were actually engaging the Bolsheviks in the Baltic, Lt. colonel Matone; M.P., a Liberal Coalition mem- be", was given passports to pay visits to the Bolshie blackguard leaders. Apparently this walking advertisement of Pelmanism did some coffee-housing with Mr Litvinoc. Now, Mr Litvinoff was the tiolshie Ambassador to England until he was found to be distributing Revolutionary literature in this country, when his exc t-.aordiiiary past was exposed by the Na- tional Party and he was sent packing. I well remember the surprise of the Independent Labour Party in the House a hen General Page Croft aih-ed If Litvin- off was really Finklestein whether he had twice been convicted of forgery and took part in the bank robbery at Tiflis. and whether he possessed no less than six different aliases. Up till then all the Ouihwaites, Snowdeus, MacDonalds, etc., were slobbering over this scoundrel Iill one presumed, or hoped, they did not know the facts. Yet, even to-day amongst oti, dome Bolshies this hero's name (provided he uses his known Russian alias) will be cheered to the echo. ALIENS. I The Aliens Bill, that half-hearted GOY- ernment measure, has now been consider- ably stiengthened and has readied its th rd reading in the House of Commons. Many members who gave definite prom- ises to the National Party at the General Election that they would fight this ques- tion, have been true to their wc- and the thanks of the country are specially due to Sir John Butcher Sir H. Nield, Sly E nest Wild (Coalition), Sir.R. Cooper, General Croft (National Party), and Mr. Bottomley (Independent) whose untiring work in the House of Commons and in the country has been of the utmost value. It would be idle, however, to pretend that their work is complete, for far too much is left to the Home Secretary. Home Secretaries as we know, are apt to be weak and we must put this right when the pre- sent Bill lapses in two years' time. The next thing is to restore the Act oi Settlement and prevent any more foreign born gentlemen from entering Parliament or Government oiffces. HOUSING. I What a tragedy it is that we cannot get a move on! It is largely due to the fact that the materials for our subsidise 1 house; cannot be transported for want of trucks. I remember writing the day after the Armistice urging the immediate demobilisa- tion of all men normally employed on roll- ing stock and it is amazing, how slow have been the efforts to improve our transport. Is it due to "super-men" or ""upt>r-ftsst>s"? Anyhow, if nothing happens we shall have to turn to "superannuation." Apart, however, from the failure to start the pauperised housing scheme of the Government, what is really serious is the absolute lack of desire of any builder to build on speculation. The trutit is that the fatal land taxes of the 1909-10 Budget still have their petrifying effect on all building and until we get rid of that crowning folly of poli- tical electioneering, the specuati ve builder will not enter the field, or, in other words, the People's Budget must go. I GOD BLESS THE PRINCE. Men who have seen onr Prince under fire are delighted to see he is just as steady, although I doubt if as cool, under the bombardment of affectionate welcome of the whole American Continent. The fact is that he has really "made good," as they say out West, and when good understanding between the English- speaking peoples is so vltil, we owe our gallant Prince no small debt for winning the hearts of our Canadian brothers and our American cousins. PUSSEYFOOT." I regret the accident to Mr Johnson, of U.S.A., for no one would wi»h any Amer- ican bodily harm when on a visit to tlil, country, but at the same time I cannot help telling him that we resent extremely the extraordinary conduct of a citizen of a foreign land coming here to attempt to deprive the British people of their liber- ties. We are rapidly becoming a more and' ¡ more sober nation and we are quite capable of taking care of our own morals witliout the interference of one who was neither born in our land nor has any share or lot in its affairs. j
