Davies, an old driver <)f the T.V.R.. with t:!o super- allnuation grant from the Society on his retiring after 43 years' .service on the T.V.R. Treorchy. The workmen of Abergorchy Collieries are at last to have a hall of their own. liie necessity for such a huilding is quite evident, when, at present, they have to hold their meetings in a public-house or III the open air. We believe that they are at present the only workmen in the Rhondda who have not a building of some kind of their own. It is understood that the building is to comprise baths, reading room, meeting room. &c. The Holiday and Literary Club held a very successful meeting at the Barmouth Coffee Tavern, when an interesting and appreciative programme was gone through. Ruskin was the title of the paper submitted to the members of the Tre- orchy Literary Society at the Park and Dare Institute on Wednesday. There was a good attendance, and the paper was thoroughly appreciated. Treorchy Reserves played Maesteo- Rangers on the Athletic Grounds on Sitturday, the homesters winning bv a try. The-TO was a good gate, and "the match was of an interesting and some- what exciting character. We are still waiting for the fulfilment 11 of Mr. D; J. Ryan's threat to us person- ally of being the first aviator of the Rhondda as he was the first motorist, and it may surprise him to know that last week we had the pleasure of assisting at a flying meeting at his native village and hobnobbing (by fi ne "flights of imagination ") wii-.Ii some notable mkers of the air as the Brothers Wriglit, Lorraine. and Grahame White. The occasion we refer to was last week's meeting of the Treorchy Literar* v Society, when Mr. Edgar Evans, B.Se., Pentre, was billed to give a lecture, The C-onl quest of the Air." We have long ad- mired Mr. Evans for his scientific mind and scholastic attainments, and our anti- cipations ot an enjoyable evening were tully realised. Illustrating his lecture with beautiful lantern slides, he traced the progress of aviation from the halloon" stage, and gave very interest- ing descriptions of all sorts' of air- ships," remarking the constructions which promised most in achieving the final con- quest of the air. Mr. Evans was parti- cularly happy in his accounts of recent flights, and did not fail on occasions to "touch" a remark with acceptable humour. Much credit is due to Mr. John Evans, T^ yladu Farm, for his splendid manipulation of the lantern. The chair was occupied by Mr. J. Davies-Evans. Treorchy. Votes of thanks were passed to all who had helped to make the meet- ing a success, and they were fully deserved. It is very gratifying to note the excellent progress made by the Society this year. The programme for the ensuing session promises abundance of good fare, and Treorchy young men are not slow in finding out the rare ad- vantages of being one of the ever-widen- ing circle of members. Mr. T. C. Rees Treorchy, is proving a valuable secretary, and deserves most of the credit for making the Society many-sided in its attractiveness, and so ambitious in the sacred cause of culture. K- inen s Institute was some years ago almost, a byword for apathy and in- activity, but latterly. thanks to the infusion of new blood (with a dash of j Yankee!), they are beginning to "iiustje and make tilings hum. A splendid move- ment is now about to reach the climax, for on Thursday evening next the Park Hall will become an up-to-date Picture Palace. and Cwmparcians will not have to go far afield to witness the marvels of cinematography. We heartily commend the enterprise of Mr. Gwilym Jones and his f-oterie. and are confident that. the undertaking will prove a. financial sue- | cess. Mr. Tom Herbert (chairman), Mr. | Howell Price (secretary), and a lllajority r of the members of the committee have! during the past few months devoted much time and energy to the develop-, incut- of the scheme. Conway Road, in the near futurei will possibly develop into the aristocratic quarter of Cwmparc, but at present its principal thoroughfare is a passage 7 perilous for pedestrians and vehicular traffic. An adventurous rag and bond merchant last Saturday penetrated inti* its fastnesses, but early came to grief, his ramshackle cart sinking in rich liquid mud up to the axle of the wheels. To report progress, he perforce had to take out the cart's contents (and a varied, malodorous collection they were), and put his shoulder literally to the wheel. We are informed that his vocabulary reflected a taie i/iituresqueness and pungency. It is requested that we moralise upon the echo of a recent tragedy. As reported in our last issue, the dead body of a Cwmparc resident was found in a. brook near Pare Uchaf Farm. The bodv was not touched until about an hour' after its discovery, waiting the arrival of the police! This fo-Oiisll slipelrstitioii dies hard! It is gratifying to note that Mr. Jack I Pugh. whose brilliant successes as a [I student we reported lately, has at last set his foot on practically the lowest rung 01 the pedagogical ladder, com- mencing duties as an ex-P.T. for a modest salary at Nelson last Monday. There must be something wrong somewhere in the administration of our educational laws that a young man of such brilliant qualifications should be so ill-suited after multitudinous applications and long waiting. Treherbert. I At the Treherbert T.V.R Station last Thursday evening, there was quite a gathering of friends of Mr. Wm. Griffiths assembled to wi^h him Godspeed on his long journey to the Antipodes. Just before the departure, Sir. Saml. Eveleigli. on behalf of the young men present, pre- sented Mr. Griffiths with a handsome dressing case. Mr. Griffiths sailed from London on Friday morning. A good meeting was held in connection with the Treherbert branch of the Young Liberals' League. at Jones' Coffei Tavern, Bute Street, on Friday evening last. A very interesting debate took place on "Single Chamber v. Second Chamber Government." Messrs. T. RodefTck and Anfield were the principal speakers. A well-attended social evening was held by the St. Mary's Church Choir at the Old National Schoolroom, Penyrenglyn, on Thursday last. An excellent repast was provided, and a good programme of dancing was carried out. Social Evening at Jerusalem, I Llwynypia. On Monday last, a social evening and prize distribution took place in connec- tion with Jerusalem Sunday School and Band of Hope, when the capacious vestry was crowded. The Rev. W. S. Jones (paster) was the chairman. The following ladies ably presided at the tables:—Miss J. Cosslett and the Misses Cox, Misses Edwards, R. A. James. Cassie Walters, Annie Evans. and Beatrice Thomas. Mrs. David Griffiths, Howells, R. Thomas, J. Hughes, Jones (Deri), Pugh, Owen Evans, and W. Walters, and Messrs. David Lewis, R. rhomas, David Adams, and Clias. Powell assisted. The bachelors' table, presided over by Messrs. James Griffiths. James Evans and Ted Hughes, was fairly suc- cessful for a time. but the onerous duties soon demanded the assistance of the ladies! During the evening, collectors towards the B.M.S. and Haiti Missions, and those who had best attended the school during the year, were handsomely rewarded with various books, presented hy the superintendent and church. :Mrs. J. W. Richards (Court House) and Mrs. J. Owen Jones (Pandy bquare) respectively very kindly presented the children with bags of sweets and handkerchiefs and Mrs. J. D. Williams (Clydach Court), Mrs Llewellyn (Irealaw), Mrs. Cox (iron- monger), Mrs. W. S. Jones (Brynlllyfyr), Mrs G. Evans (Brynhyfryd), and Mrs. T. Morgans (Ely Street) subscribed to- wards the cost of the tea. The collectors were Misses Blodwen Griffiths and Beatrice Jones, and Mrs. David Thomas who, coupled with Mr. Dapid Thomas so creditably made the arrangements for the epening. Heartv votes of thanks were accorded to the various oonors and those who assisted in making a successful evening. The violinist and pianist were Master Benny Griffiths and Miss Gwladys Thomas respectively.
