BATTLE AT SUAKIM.
BATTLE AT SUAKIM. A BRILLIANT VICTORY. General Grenfell attacked the rebel trenches at an carlv hour on Thursday morning, the men being paraded before sunrise, in accordance with the orders of the day issued the previous night. Under a heavy artillery fire the infantry ad- vanced, and finally rushed the redoubts and trenches iu brilliant fashion. The e. J those who stood their ground being bayonetted on the spot. The credit of this gallant piece of work, it appears, is due to the Egyptian Black Regiments. At the same time the British Hussars made a charge upon the rebel cavalry, scattering them in all directions. forces will, it is said, encamp forthepresont the rebel lines, and construct fresh defences there to prevent the rebels from again harassing Suakim. The rebel loss was heavy. The British Hussars had six men killed and wounded, and the Egyptians 32 killed and wounded. No officers were killed, and only two Egyptian of- ficers were wounded. The victory seems to be decisive, and reflects the highest credit-upon all concerned. SUAKIM, Thursday. The attack on the enemy's trenches was made shortly after day- break. All the arrangements wero made m ad- vance, and the forward movement was conducted •with precision.. Thetrof,r>c were six Egyptian batta- lions in two brigades the first under Colonel Kitchener, and the second under Colonel Holled Smith mounted troops, led by Colonel Barrow, Scottish Borderers; and a detachment of the Welsh Regiment, led by Colonels Coke and Smythe then a naval detachment under Com- mThe 20th Hussars covered the advance, charged the dervish cavalry, and routed them after a brilliant fight. The assault on the Arab position was a great success, the trenches being cleared and the Arabs routed in half an hour. As soon as the dervishes fled the trenches were filled up and a sandbag redoubt constructed, where the black and British troops sleep to- night. Sir Francis Grenfell expressed the highest ad- miration at the gallantry displayed. Four Hussars were killed and five wounded in the fight with the dervish horsemen. Two Soudanese were killed and 30 wounded. Lieu- tenants David and Brown serving with the Egyptian force, were slightly wounded. The loss of the enemy is estimated variously, but general report says that 500 were killed and as many wounded. Their total force was close on 3,000 men. Colonel Barrow and the mounted troopsho tly pursued the routed enemy.
