TENBY.
TENBY. DEATH OF THE REV. F. O. ELLIs.-The many frienda of the Rev. F. O. Ellis will hear with sincere regret of his death, which occurred on Saturday morning last, at Great Barr, Birmingham. Mr Ellis was 35 years of age, and for a long time had been an invalid and unable to take that active part in the Work of the parish he would have wished but he never ceased to take an interest in the work, and as Utely as the 1st of May of this year he was wheeled in his chair to baptise a cottager's dying child. He Was interred at Great Barr on Wednesday afternoon. During his curacy of Tenby, which extended from 1879 to 1882, lie-was held in high respect by the inhabitants ienelally, anJ by the poor in particular, by whom his acts of generosity are yet remembered. SERIOUS FIRE.—About six on Friday morning a fire was discovered to have brokeu out on the premises of Cash Stores in High Street, Mr P. Palmer pro- prietor. The inmates were at once aroused and got out safely, but the fire had secured a firm grip npon the shop. The Volunteer Brigade were at once sum- moned, and under the direction of Captain Alfred Thomas Lewis, and Lieutenant H. J. Gregory, the brigade got the hose into play, and at eight o'clock the fire had been subdued, but not until nearly the Whole of the stock had been destroyed and the pre- mises considerably damaged. Much irritation was expressed at the absence of the police, who did not make an appearance until some three hours after the discovery of the fire. In consequence of this, the brigade was unable to get at the fire bell in the police station and so give the alarm to the fire brigade. Lieutenant Henderson, R.N., divisional officer of Coastguard, was present to offer any assistance that might be required. Credit is due to the fire brigade for their promptness in getting to work, and to this is due entirely the fact that the flames were circum- scribed and a serious conflagration prevented. The stock and premises were insured.
CAMROSE.
CAMROSE. CHURCH TEA AND SUXDAY SCHOOL TREAT.—On Thursday, 26th of June, was held the annual Church tea and Sunday School treat in this parish. Though for days past the weather had been most unpropitious for such gatherings, and had made those interested 111 this event doubtful of the success of the under- taking, yet, fortunately, the day turned out to be everything that could be desired. The children as- sembled about 3.30 p.m., when they firllt went to the Church, where a short service was held. This over, they repaired to the school room, where they had tea, which, if the proof of the pudding is in the eating, they thoroughly enjoyed. It was now about 4.30, and their elders began to arrive, and did full Justice to the good things provided for them. The children meanwhile had been despatched to a field kindly lent by Miss Adams, of Canrose, where they indulged in various forms of amusement. One of the chief attractions to the youngsters was a species of whirli-go-round. For this we had to thank the fertile genius of Mr Llewellyn, the clerk. It was improvised out of a pair of cart wheels, with a ladder across to which at each end was attached a chair, on which those who wished to induce the feeling of sea sickness sat. The motive power was supplied by men and boys pulling ropes attached to the ladder. It was altogether a most ingenious contrivance, and J^as thoroughly appreciated. The rest of those who had partaken of the cup which cheers, but does not inebriate, having now arrived on the scene, some- thing \rss necessary to amuse them. Miss Fortune, always most kind and interested in anything with reference to Camrose Church, got together a number of the fair sex, some fairly advanced in years, who ran races for various prizes. There were egg races, and it J^as an amusing sight to behold the old people, with hands extended, which grasped the spoon on which Was placed the eggs, careering over the ground. Cricket had been going on for some time by the men, but this was now given up, and they took their places In line to try and win tobacco, which the same lady had provided for them as prizes. It is needless to say that the contest here was severe, and the prize when Won was not long in being made use of. As it was Jiow getting rather damp with the heavy dew, all ad- journed to the school, where dancing was indulged in to the strains of Mr Llewellyn's violin, who most good naturedly supplied the music during the even- Between the dances, Mr Allen, Mr W. Davies, Messrs Frank and J. Thomas sang songs, which were Well appreciated. At 11 p.m., after cheers for the Vicar and Mrs Tute, Dr. Adley, Miss Fortune, God Bare the Queen' was sung, and the proceedings came to an end. It was said by all that this was the most successful and pleasant tea that has been held in Camrose Church School, and its succcss was due in a Sjfuat measure to the way in which the Vicar and Mrs Tate, Dr and Miss Adley, Miss Forture, Mr and Afra Llewellyn put their energy into it. Especially kind was it of Dr Adley and Miss Fortune to help both by their presence and their purses, to make the day a pleasant one. But experience has shown that they can always be relied on to help where their help is needed. Mr Jenkins also helped with his usual kind subscription, and to several members of the choir, *ho with great taste decorated the room, and knew the secret of making a public tea, a thing to be often *lshed for, the best thanks of all who enjoyed it are due. A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF A JOURNEY…
as though they were a herd of swine. They re- ceived their instructions without a murmur and worked with as much willingness as though their very lives depended upon the destiny of the flames- Our crew, of course, worked with an equal willingness, but in doing so were not sub- jected to the tyranny inflicted upon the China- men. We continued working the whole of the night and the valuable trenches on the following morning were completed. The safety of the village and of the oil was then secure but the fir6 in the hills remained an unquenchable flame for nearly a week afterwards. Before extin- i guishing itself it transferred for four consecu- tive nights the darkness of the ranchman's camp into the light of day and reduced the verdant mountain growth into an extensive bed of smouldering dust. I am not able to calculate the damage caused by the unfortunate spark of the locomotive; the lose, however, must have been heavy, as the fire, in its resistless fury had destroyed a considerable quantity of timber, as well as a large batch of wheat which had grown to maturity on the side of one of the hills. The date of my leaving the ranch corresponds within two weeks with the date of the fire. A fortnight following the conflagration I received a letter- from England which induced me to j abandon the isolated calling of a ranchman i and to undertake a homeward journey 3000 miles overland and 3000 miles over water. The overland, train by which I travelled, took I' five days and fifteen hours on her journey from California to New York, and the admirable Atlantic liner • The City of New York landed me safely in Liverpool in a little over six days from the time of my embarkation. My sketch is now finished. In presenting it to my readers I have endeavoured in my im- ( perfect way to commit to paper as accurately as ( possible, my reflections on a twelve months' 1 sojourn in America, confining my remarks more ] particularly, to my surroundings in the isolated Camn nf nnr nntfit nf Wpntarn r»nr»Vimpn Tf -I:' .w-- my readers have been interested in the sketch I shall feel that the light which I have at- tempted to throw across the xanchman's path in a far-off country has not been reflected in vain. The end.
