OUR SHORT STORY
OUR SHORT STORY /?. -1-1 A LIFE FOR LOVE. Is was Thanksgiving Day, clear, oold, a.nd f bright. To how many of the millions of people who opened their eyes on that bright morning came the thought that on this day, this bright November day, freedom &nd a new life awaited one of the inmates of our State prison? No, the thought came to but few. What mattered it to them that a poor wretch would that day stand free, free before his God and fellowmen, free to face once more the world, with the resolve to olear if possible a tarnished name and be a man again. Yet aA the prisoners filed into the chapel, two by two, that afternoon, in almost every heart was the hope that he might be the lucky maa. What a strain there was on the heart and nervee in the breathless silence of the few momenta tha/fc preceded the calling of the name, and. oh, God what a revulsion of feeling when the name -that fell from the warden's lips was Another's 1 On t.hid-particular day not one of those men but whose heart beat faster tban its wont a.nd whose pulses thrilled* The warden made the customary address and then with a few pre- limmary remarks the name "Jamee Nuon" ,*bkl slowly from his lips. j The prisoners went back to their cells, and James Nason, a white-haired old man, advanced and followed the warden to his private office. The warden kindlly shook him by the hand, and, with his best wjisihes for a better life still ringing in his ears, the gates of the prison changed' behind' him, and Jaanes Nason stood once more under the blue sky, a. free man. j! In a littile village t'n We-stern Massachusetts an old man toiled slowly the bleak and drifted roads. His clothes were thin, and but a scant protection from tho sharp east wind. Without any warning there was a sharp cry and a pair of handsome bays, drawn back on their haunches, barely missed knook- ing the oilman down to certain death. A beautifully-dressed lady leaned out of the carriage, a.rid in a sharp voice inquired the cause of the delay. Upon being told, she exclaimed angrily: "The miserable beggars, they are always in decent people's way- The next time drive over them. I phalli be so late I shall not be able to match these silks in the fading light," and vv;th never a glance at the old m»9 the carriage rolled on. at the old maa the carriage rolled on. He toiled slowly or again, the incident soon forgotten. Angry words were very common, -an& if he was killed what difference would it The warden kindly shook him by the hand. imike? Nobody would ca-re. He fell to talking out loud, as if musing to himself. "Twenty yeans ago to-day," he said, "we were in the counti ng-room when she came run- ning to me, all excitement, and told me her father from time to time had taken money from the drawer, intending, she sobbingly declared, to replace it; but the error had been dts- covered, he had no money, and already sus- pioious glances were cast upon him, and she begged me, me who had loved her with my whole heart, loved her so that every tear was like a knife-thrusf, to help her. Help her! I would have lain down my life for her, and only we three ever knew how the errors were erased from his books and* placed on my own. I was arrested, convicted, and sentenced to 2.0 years, for the amount was no small one, and have given my life for my love." He stopped abort in his musings, and advanced slowly up a neat path to a pretty cottage and knocked at the door, inquiring of the woman who opened it if Miss Annie Jenkins lived there. "Law sakes I" said the woman, to whom the bad weather had made the sight of strangers rare, amd who, therefore, was willing to imparl any news. however stale; "no, nor ain't since the last twenty years. She was married to a rich young feller. lives in tho town, and don't have much to say to the likes of us, though I can remember when she was a dea-l poorer 'n me" this with an indignant sniff. We all thovht she liked a young feller who was seat to prison for stealing, but if she did she didn't waste no time annourndng for him, seem* as how she was married three weeks arter he went to gaol. That was her what just went by m the carriage. She What, aoin1 ? WeH." And the woman stared in surprige after the slowly-retreating figure, but soon closed the door and went back to her sewing with the muttered exolMMtJon. "He might 'a. thanked me!" • » The warden sat in his, office when the door swung slowly open and an old man staggered rather than walked in, sinking into the chair the warden pushed forward. "Warden," he I Barely <Biis«ed knocking the Old man down. sa.id, "I want to come back. I've been out in the world and it's changed some sinoe I lived there. Not but what I want to thank you for my freedom; it's one kind act i-Do a lifetime, but I haven't long to live and I'd; rather die among fanwiiar awnee than among strangers 1" *j £ tome, my mao," said the warden kindly, j "we can't takp you back. You had better go home." "Home. Yes, I'd better go gome. I'm lubeless here, warden. o.'m—spoing—home." and Jamee Nason had indeed gone to the home where all wrongs are rlighted, to be at met, for he was dead. Just then the gaoler opened the door. "See to the removal of this dead body, Jones," said the warden fampty. Andl yet they say the age of heroes and chivalry is put.
