Tim €»/J. SWANSEA, FRIDAY, Oct. 25. V We have this week to announce to our readers the very important intelligence of the commence- ment of hostilities on the continent. The result of the action which has taken place; it will be seen, has proved disastrous to the Austrians; oJ the ex- tent of the loss sustained we cannot accurately judge, as our only sources of information are the French and Dutch papers. But, tetthe event be as it may, we may reasonably flatter ourselves that ere this the Russians have formed a junction with the Austrians, and that the next engagement may materially turn the scale. With respect to the homeward-bound fleets'.we are sorry to say that it is not in our power to com- municate the arrival of the whole. Fears are en- tained respecting the safety of many ships; and, with regard to a, few, their loss is placed. beyond the ppssibility.of doubt. Arrived here, Mrs. Murcott, Rev. Mr. Powell, Miss FFONES, Mrs. and Miss Fernyhough, Coi. Pcacoeke, Mr. 'Place, jun. Miss Place, Mr. D. Powell, Miss .FENKILLS, R. arid Mrs. Williams, Rev., Mr. and Mrs. Triugham, two Misses Tringham. A meeting of the Committee of the Tontine So- ciety, for building Public Rooms and a Theatre in this town, was held yesterday, when the Constitu- tion of the Society was read, unanimously approv- ed,) and ordered to be engrossed for the signatures of the Subscribers. On Monday next our Theatre will close for the present Season. Among the improvements of Swansea, none can be more advantageous than the establishment of. a good school for. young ladies. We are led to tl.i- observation from the very respectable assembly, at the Miss Barbers' balloon Tuesday. last. X oail was.quite private, we cannot give an j iar account of it; but .report says, that all the youngladiesdancedexceedingly well. WeshQulri have been very alad to have given the. names o) those young ladies who arc said to have exei n (i most, but we fear it Inight be considered lndt- licate. We feel confident; however, from what we iiear, that few, i^.i'jy, or the tlr-»r masters in LUII- don excel Mr. Hart as a dancing-master; and the general address and rnanners of the young ladies shew that the greatest attention has been paier,by the Miss Barbers to their pupils. An apple-tree in full blossom, was seen onTues- day last at Uangennith, in tile'.Seigniory of Gower. a few miles from this town, though standing in a very exposed situation i.ear the sea. 'Mr/. Did ier, many years a most respectable lin- guist in Bathj was last week made an honorary "I member of the Gwyneddigion Society established in London, in consequence of his having lively completely acquired the knowledge of the Welsh language, and of the many admirable and scientific essays which he has written in it, and communi- cated to that Soci-ety the members of which, with a zeal ftruly patriotic, have determined by every means to rescue their native language from disuse, and the works of their ancient bards from that oblivion which-once threatened the most beautiful and energetic compositions of any age or country. On Friday last the largest and most respectable, body of gentlemen and freeholders ever remem- bered on a similar occasion, assembled at Usk, in Monmouthshire, to consider of a proper person to represent the county in Parliament, in the room of the late much-lamented GenendRooke. Lord Arthur Somerset having previously declared b's iu- tcation of becoming a candidate to supply the va- !ca.ncy, the friends in his interest at Monmouth, h t^tow, &c. Itiet his Lo. :h-iiip at the Beaufort \i Ilaglaod, at eleven o'clock, where an elegant cola collation was provided. The company then set off for Usk and, before their arrival, they were joined, by a large body of freeholders from other parts of the county, who unitedly, in grand caval- cade, conducted his Lordship to the Town Ha.U, in Usk, where he alighted, and was received by the .principal landed interest of Monmouthshire. Jo- ri seph Price, Esq. the High Sheriff, having taken the chair, opened the business of the meeting; after which W. KemeySj Esq. ofMaindee, rose, and, hav- ing paid some complinients to the memory of Gen. Rooke, begged leave to propose Lord Arthur So- ng merset as a proper person to succeed him in the representation of the county. The nomination was seconded by Richard Lewis, Esq. of Llandilo, who likewise expressed his sorrow for the loss the county had sustained by the death of the late Mem- ber, and alter some friendly remarks on his Lord- Ship's family, joined his assent to Mr. Kemeys's re- commendation. The resolution to support Lord Arthur Somerset was carried unanimously.1 His Lordship returned his thanks in a speech that was received with universal satisfaction, in which he paid a VClY handso, tdmtt, to the memory of the late General Rooke, and, at the conclusion of the address, the Hall echoed with the most heartfelt applause. His Lordship afterwards thanked the "die rib, and the gentlemen present, for their kind- ness and attention, which concluded the business of the meeting.—Ail elegant dinner was served up at the Salmons inn, to a company of nea'rly>l00gen- tlemen, besides select parties at other houses and the remainder of the day passed with a cordiality and social intercourse highly indicative or the una- nimity of the meeting, and tlie happy preservation- of the peace of the county of Monnijulh upon thel present interesting occasion Mr.- ILmlury Leigh,: who has always-been looked up to as tliejhope o'fj the, independent interest, having politely declined offering himself in opposition to Lord Arthur So- merset. ■ Tuesday, alflan undertook, for a trifling wager, to pick up 100 stones, arranged at a distance- of a yard from each other, in a field-near- this town, returning to deposit every stone, separately, in a basket placed at the commencement of the distance. The time allowed for'the performance ot the task was 39 minutes, and the bet was lost byafewsecondsonly. The following shocking circumstance, whicV.it 0n t is painful to relate, occurred one day last v,eek |kv an Inn on the London road As the sery.u.fs pjf the Duke of Beaufort were travelling in t,ne, <>r his Grace's carriages, from Rottingdean to lowi>^ ttfe coachman stopped to bait his horses at thr hOnSe above alluded to, where one of the female servants liad not' long alighted before she found her wayMto a certain convenience in the yard, and there deli- vered herself of a child, which she is violently sus- pected of bayinrr inhumanly murdered, by cutting its throat with a penknife, which was afterwards found bloody in her pocket. The body, the better to conceal the murder, was thrown into the soil. The mother, on her return from the privy, appear- ed. as it nothing extraordinary had happened; but her long absence, and other circumstances, having created suspicion among the females of the house, she was, told by the landlord, on her approaching I the carriage to prosecute her journey, that she must not go, as there was an infant in the way which demanded her attendance. At this unexpected sa- lutation, thcdeluded girl appeared much affected, and'was in coiisequence put to bed, with strong symptoms of fever. The child was taken out of the privy, with its head almost severed from its body. -In Inquest was the next day taken .before the Co- roner, who returned a verdict ofwi!jùl murder-but I suspended his warrant of commitment, as the of- fender is in such a state of mental and bodHyaf-onv as to render her recovery extremely doubtful.0 T l ni wi g r 1, </ I a distrjct wa'i'*>-p(| 5,v » 'h 1 fo\ i\ d I'ROM a cont a', wno m ■ s was favoured \w:ii a copy of it Iroin tne .piij-i-ioiio ot a gentleman now eu¡pgedul n-amrng a description of the most strik- on 0 1(- Z V CNCRJ mSouth "WA.C^. — i 'I i 7 a j -lin,ud»t it who mm Ni- examine, 1:L P,UT.IN,O- ,H IH:CI.ji«litv troni wincn tiie J<nv\ C<I)- ,IEI TF-J"A.Y WUNONI LECLN JIT nmh MIL I- I I I -I- a *ai T OR SWENEIY H I T U t< > J 11 1 D,~E R b it, N rettrnl) T' S ci C 5 W R S 1! In parsing through the vale-oi.Towv.thS Contemplative mind is.new lldefed in contusion, and can baldly tell whether niosl. to admire the fertility, of the soil, or the: magnificence of tne surrounding scenery. The fertility is uniform the agriculturist baa only to proceed and to admire :■ the only change for ban is to admire and proceed. The man ofre- lineu taste stands in a diiferent predicament. The promi- nent icatures that -challenge his admiration, vary their shape at every step, like the -misty clouds driven before the wan- dering steps ofautumaal storms. The pencil in the hand of a tnasternifty give a tolernbie representation of some of these enchanting scenes the pen would only prove its own fee- bleness. in the fruitless attempt. Eveiy man whose mind is so far cultivated as to enable him to perceive the beauties of KATURE, when she paints in her bat side, lias always acknowledged the vale of Towy to be a 1m specirneÏlofthat stile. Within a few days, however, a ficw avenue hath been opened, hitbertc impassable to traveners, which exhibits the natural beauties or this district in a point or view that will in no small degree add to the pleasure they formerly afforded, even when viewed from far less advantageous stations. in my .last tonr I was advised to cross the Towy at Llandilo bridge, and to follow the new turnpike road along tiie south side of the river to Carmarthen bridne, a distance somewhat short of fifteen miles. 0 To describe the sensations which I felt in passing through this rnchantiiig district, would fill a volume: at jn-esent I can only, iov and in the name oi all future ftCiCiiiiht traveUers. :exnrc'gs my thanks to. those gentlemen who have been the means of opening a passage through a portion of oni .island .unparalleled.-for natural beauttes, bat w hit J till now v,. known only to the inhabitants. J Lor-i Cawuoi, the principal land-owner in the district, and othei gentlemen of enlightened minds like his lord- ship, easily perceiving the advantage of a tur.np'ike-road through tins iuieresting:tract of country, gave the plan their patumage niid. support. Yet some .of the smaller land- owners cpposed the undertaking, altbongSi it is said their pvopt-ity.will soon be doubled in value bv the measure. TbepeJlt geneiauon. will haicily beiieve this. Sir A lihum Paxton, lb niber of Parliament for the ad- jÓinillgboropgh of Carmarthen, I am infornsed, has ad- vanced to the trustees the principal part, if not the whole of the money expended m the making of this line of road. A stI anger to t.ii.s gentleman myself, I can oulv mention hlln merely from the accounts I have received oi hun nl his neighbourhood r from these it wburd seem, thir with allen, lightened and active mind, his time is chierty cmployelt in removing, as tar as pecuniary assistance It- do, private misery, and encouraging public improvements tbat, firow- ing aside the stiff embroidered tinsel and the frivolous trappings ofstate, which too often surround high stations, ho.enters, with- the itiost benign- liability, into lumiliar in- tercourse with the peasiintrv ol inn neighbourhood, and bv Ins example, and never-refused assistance, points out to them the' path tinn lead. to comfort, to independence and to wealth, A granger to the stings oí, the canker-worm of envy hitherto, I do envy this man the possession of wealth thus applied." A poor woman residing at Mothvey,nea.rL!nn- ,w 11 dovery, in Carmarthenshire, was a few days since delivered of three the boys, who were all born be- fore assistance could be obtained; and, with the mother, were likely to do well. to do well. According to the Schedules now delivering to assessors under theTproperty Act, it appears-that a penalty of 201. besides double duty, attached on any tenant not making a return of the actual Tent of the premises in his occupation.—A difficulty, however,, wiii arise when the occupier is the pro-S prietor, as it is a nice -point'exactly to ascertain the vaiije of premises, which probably at no recent period have been let; and if the commissioners uc are dissatisfied, with such proprietor's return, it is in their power to appoint a surveyor to value the premises, and order the expence of the valuation to be paid by the proprietor.—In making the retum of income notarising from landed property, there is little, if any, variation from the, schedule of fbrmeryears. The importation of foreign wheat into Liverpool, irnpo during the last week, amounting to 21,483 bags. le Remat'ktLbteoccurnncc,TlIesday,a person driv- ing a flock of geese to Bath, had proceeded as far as Inglishcomb-iane, when the geese attacked him, and so lacerated his legs and face, that it was with much difficulty he reached home, covered with hJüod; the geese immediately took, wing, and re- turned to the farm from whence they bad been driven. OnTllesday night some person or persons depo- sited some assafeetida, mixed with oibcf hartshorn, in the crevices of several shop doors-in Chester, chiefly belonging to linen drapers and clothier*, which rendered the shops so very disagreeable, that scarcely any business ,could be transacted in them for the two following days, and several ladies nearly fainted on entering them, arid were obliged to go out immediately.
