Did ier, many years a most respectable lin- guist in Bathj was last week made an honorary "I member of the Gwyneddigion Society established in London, in consequence of his having lively completely acquired the knowledge of the Welsh language, and of the many admirable and scientific essays which he has written in it, and communi- cated to that Soci-ety the members of which, with a zeal ftruly patriotic, have determined by every means to rescue their native language from disuse, and the works of their ancient bards from that oblivion which-once threatened the most beautiful and energetic compositions of any age or country. On Friday last the largest and most respectable, body of gentlemen and freeholders ever remem- bered on a similar occasion, assembled at Usk, in Monmouthshire, to consider of a proper person to represent the county in Parliament, in the room of the late much-lamented GenendRooke. Jo- ri seph Price, Esq. the High Sheriff, having taken the chair, opened the business of the meeting; after which W. KemeySj Esq. ofMaindee, rose, and, hav- ing paid some complinients to the memory of Gen. Rooke, begged leave to propose Lord Arthur So- ng merset as a proper person to succeed him in the representation of the county. The nomination was seconded by Richard Lewis, Esq. of Llandilo, who likewise expressed his sorrow for the loss the county had sustained by the death of the late Mem- ber, and alter some friendly remarks on his Lord- Ship's family, joined his assent to Mr. Kemeys's re- commendation. The resolution to support Lord Arthur Somerset was carried unanimously.1 His Lordship returned his thanks in a speech that was received with universal satisfaction, in which he paid a VClY handso, tdmtt, to the memory of the late General Rooke, and, at the conclusion of the address, the Hall echoed with the most heartfelt applause.
