The im- ijorts and exports have exceeded those of tile corresponding period of 1895 by 12,000 tons. Tne impOits include 2,000 tons of lead ore and 3,000 loi.s of sulphides from Sutb Australia. The consignees of the lead ore are Messrs. Vivian and Son-, Hifod Works. Tiie sulphides will be i treated by a new process at nsaiiitet, at I works which a new company are fitting up for the purpose, having communication with the Midland Railway. This is a new trade, and promises an important future. The shipmeLts of coal were 38,335 tons, patent fuel 4,393 tone, and tin-plates and general goods 5,920 tons, the latter including 700 tuns for France, 550 tons for Portugal, 280 tons for St. Petersburg, 400 tons for Germany, 650 tons for Italy, 330 tons for Baltimore, and 3,010 tons for home ports. The l'ig iron market has varied during the week, hub shipments were good, and there was a. small improvement in price. The finished iron and steed vvoiksare fully employed upon existing contracts,- and ttie prospects are more encourag- ing. fhere is a slight improvement in copper, but block tin shews no alteration. t-lu 1UON.—Glasgow warrants, 4^s 3d. cash buyers, MIOJJLKSBBO—Ho. 3, 3A8 3^D, prompt; othtr niiuiUftrs in proportioij. 4 I oHh ^me,p',7VVfrrants* 458 *'3' for 'nixed numbers i.o.b. THE TRANSVAAL.
THE TRANSVAAL. KRUGER'S REPLY. ANOTHER SEARCH FOR ARMS. A party of 400 Johannesburg volunteers have been searching the Simmer and Jack property above and below ground for arms. According to The Tinies correspondent, an official states that the authorities believe that the Reform Committee have not kept their word of honour with the Government, and that a large quantity of arms and ammuni- tion is still concealed in or around Johannes- burg. GERMANY AND THE TRANSVAAL. It will doubtless be remeubered that, as soon as the news of the fight at Krugersdorp arrived at Berlin, a committee was appointed to collect subscriptions for the wounded Boers, in order to display the sympathy of the capital in a material form. The Consul- General of the Transvaal in Berlin has now received, for transmission to the committee, an acknowledgement of the sum collected, which amounted to 14,046 marks. KRUGEB'S REPLY TO CHAMBERLAIN. The Pretoria correspondent of The Tinv t describes President Kruger's rt-ply to Mr. Chamberlain's invitation as a diplomatic masterpiece. The Government objects to discus3 reforms, on the ground that England admittedly cannot interfere in the matter of interal administration. At the same time, private suggestions from the British Govern- ment would always receive consideration. If the revision of the Convention of London, and the superseding of it by a treaty of amity and commerce containing a most-favoured nation clause cannot be discussed unless the alleged grievances are also discussed, the Government prefers to leave matters as they are, and will limit its demands to an indemnity for tha Jameson raid. The President points to the necessity of his presence at the meeting of the Volksraad shortly, when important measures are to be considered, as an objection to his going to England, and suggests that the matter should not be pressed now. The English Government can, however, still facilitate his going by accepting the basis of discussion already proposed by the Presi- dent. Stress is laid on the view that, with patience and forbearance on both sides, the present difficulties may yet be overcome, and hope is expressed that wounded feelings will be healed and friendly relations restored. DEATH SENTENCE ON REFORM LEADERS. Sentence of death has been pronounced upon Mr. Lionel Phillips, Mr. Hays Hammond, Mr. Percy Farrar, and Colonel Rhodes. Mr. Knight, United States Consul at Cape Town, has cabled to Mr. Olney that it is understood the death sentence passed on Mr. Hammond, one of the Reform leaders, his been commuted. THE EARL OF COVENTRY AND PRESIDENT KRUGER. The Earl of Coventry has borne testimony in no ungrudgiugitnanner to the way in which the Boers treated the wounded prisoners after the battle of Krugersdorp. It will be remem- bered that Major the Hon. C. F Coventry was reported dead, but subsequently the news came to his distressed parents of his safety, President Kruger has received from the Earl of Coventry the following letter, dated from I Croome Court, March 5: "Your Honour,— Under God's blessing, my son, Major the Hon. C. F. Coventry, arrived here yesterday. He was wounded, and in the Krugersdorp Hospital for several weeks, and he speaks in grateful terms of the benevolence and atten- tion of your people. When the fighting was over they indeed proved themselves generous adversaries, and my dear son was looked after as lovingly and tenderly as if he had been at home. Li.dy Coventry and I therefore venture to ask your Honour to accept, on behalf of your people, our very hearty thanks for all the great kindness shown to our son, and we wish to assure you that recollection of this will never fade from our mem •u-y. If your Honour should visit England -as we hope you may do -we shall, I trust, be ible to thank you personally."
