GENERAL NEWS. THE ROYAL VISIT TO IRELAND.—The following vessels of the royal navy will most'likely compose the royal squadron on her Majesty's visit to Ireland, next month. They will be all steam-vessels, either propelled by the screw or paddle.wheel —Victoria and Albert, royal yacht, 2 guns, 118 men, Lord A. The Mayor of Bristol has received informa'ion, on autho- rity, that the Queen does not intend to take Bristol, on her way to Ireland. She will embark direct for Cork from Os- borne. The loss to the working classes in two cities in Baden and the immediate neighbourhood is estimated at 100,000 florins a day. Admirable fruits of revolution 1 On Trinity Sunday, the various prelates of the Church of England admitted 190 deacons and 184 priests to Holy Orders. The Archbiehop of York, in his ]ate charge, has declared that baptismal regeneration is not a doctrine of the Church of England, and gives quotations from writings of the Reformers to show that the compilers of the Liturgy never entertained that view. The London and North Western Railway Company have determined on reducing the rates for the catiiage of goods be- tween Liverpool and Manchester to the same effect with those charged by river andcanal. An extensive engineering firm in Belfast (Messrs. M'Adam), are at present executing an order for a number of large iron hotiies for California. The affairs of the Cheltenham and Oxford Railway Com- pany are being wound up, with a view to the entire abandon- ment of the scheme. The slaves in the United States have trebled their numbers within the last forty years they are exciting alarm and in- convenience among the pale-faces; they will form the diffi- culty, the Ireland, of General Taylor and future presidents, f Joseph Loton, who had for many years filled the office o door-keeper at the Home Office, died suddenly in the early part of last week, at his residence in Cowley street, West- minster. Major Campbell, an old and most distinguished Peninsula officer, died suddenly on Saturday afternoon, while walking in PattMatt. A few days ago, the workmen who are cutting through a mass of rock at Westbury, near Brackiey, Oxfordshire, came, at the depth ot 20 feet, on a layer ofciay, in which were found imbedded the bones of an Ichthyosaurus. The magistrates at Huddersfield have convicted a tempe- rance hotel keeper in 33s. fine and costs, for selling ginger- beer during the hours of divine service, it being a fermented liquor," and therefore coming undei the clause of the Public. house act. The Primitive Methodist, Chapel, Cowpen-quay, Shields, is at present undergoing repairs, and being altered, preparatory to its being made into a beer-shop and public-house! Many of the Carlist noblemen and gentlemen, hitherto re- siding as exiles in this and other countries, have come to the determination to return to Spain, and avail themselves of the provisions of the recfnt act of amnesty. Several ot them have set out for their native land. A Swansea paper describes a young pig, with four eyes, and aproboscis about two inches long, in the centre of its fore- head, while the outline of its countenance resembles that of a monkey. The cholera has spread greatly in Liverpool. There were 366 cases during last week in that place. Henry Hruugham Dawson, clerk to Messrs. Henry, manu- factures. of Bradford, has obtained ..£950 by a forgery on the branch Bank of England at Lefds, with which he has gone off. One hundred pounds is offered for his apprehension. A father and his .daughter have died at Chatham, from pricking their fingers accidentally, which caused their arms to mortify, and death to ensue rapidly. Housebreaking appears to be on the increase throughout the country. A rogue has escaped conviction at the Gloucester sessions, through the offence being stated in the indictment to have taken jilace in iS48, instead of IS49. An American paper states that a society has been estab- lishtd down in the east, consisting exclusively of ladies, called the Celerity of Matrimony Society,' the object of which is to deprive men of the privilege of proposing in nuptial preli- minaries, they having shamefully abused the right, and sui- tcied it to become almost a dead letter. Last week a gentleman found a £100 bank note under the cushion of a carriage in which he had taken his seat at the Rugbystation. lie left it with the clerk, to find the owner. Clifton is now in all its beauty, the Downs are in fine con- dition, and the opposite woods charm the eye wherever it (iweiis a great number of rustic seats have been erected on the Downs, under the direction of a committee of a com- miitee of gentlemen. Louis Phiilippe has presented to the captain of the Exptess steamer, which conveyed his ex-Majesty from Havre to South- ampton, a beautiful silver vase and cover, with an autograph letter. The Dean of Durham has offered to give £500 in aid of any measure adopted by the authorities of that city for the pre- vention of cholera. Emigration has increased at Liverpool, though harvest time is coming. The number of persons who habitually reside in boats on the river, near Canton, is estimated at 200,000. The popula- tion of the city of Canton is above 1,000,000. The inhabitants of St. James's, Westminster, have voted i'5,000 to build an in'ant pauper asylum. They may find an advantageous site for the building in the colonial city of Ade- laide. A gitl, 14 years old, living as servant at Manchester, was scolded severely for pilfering money from the till, last week. when she scouted away in a pet, and drowned herself in the canal. A writer in the Louisville Journal, describing the effects of a tornado at" Big Spring," gravely states that this morning, fowls of every kind are lying scattered over the fields entirely stripped of feathers." A young French lady, named Rheims, who had been staying as governess with a family, near Douglas, Isle of Man, was found drowned a few days ago, on the receding of the tide among the rocks. From letters found in her possession there is no doubt she committed suicide. The Court of Common Pleas has pronounced the important decision, that mortgages to building societies are exempt from stamp duty under the act of parliament regulating them. The magistrates of the county of Kent have. by an over- whelming majority, rejected a proposition for the appointment of a county constabulary: out of 100 justices present, only 20 voted for the proposition. The French harvest gives promise of being a most abundant one. The commissioners of Woods and Forests have given be- tween three and four acres of Holyrood-park for public wash. iog and bleaching grounds. Mi. Charles Pearson, who is mnking strenuous endeavours to reform prison discipline, has published his intention to ac- cede to any invitation from scientific and other public institu- tions, and deliver lectures to their members gratuitously.— Will he be invited to Newport? The liberal portion of the English press is making an ear- nest appeal to the country on behalf of the oppressed Hun. garians. A vagabond, named Jeffereys, has been assisting to pub- lish a most shameful pamphlet, reflecting on the brothers of St. Bernard Monastery, Leicestershire, which turns out to be false from beginning to end, according to his own confession, and he is now suffering in gaol for his crime. A child has been recovered from the last stage of cholera, by the application ofeiechicity. Mr. W. Turnhill, of Braceborough, has experienced a loss of a singular nature—no less than the death of a favourite goose, which had been 011 the premises at Braceborough, tor 60 years, and prior to that had been in the possession of Mr. John Smith, of Deeping St. James, for 40 years. Sir G. Grey, when moving the second reading of the annual bill for exempting stock in trade from rates, gave an assurance that that was the last time thejjill would be introduced. The Dean and Chapter or Rochester have dismissed Dr. Whitson from the mastership of tbeir cathedral grammar school, because he has pubiishedja pamphlet accusing them of misapplying the funds of the endowment. Miss Cushman intends to return to America, accompanied by her friend, Miss Hayes, the novellist and translator. Sir H. L. Bulwer, being in indifferent health, is going to the German spas, before proceeding on his mission to Wash- ington. f Petitions are in course of signature in many of the parishes of North Wilts against the practice which now prevails in the country of issuing and delivering fetters on the Sunday- The Orange Confedeiation resolved upon celebrating the 12th of July, with all its ancient mummeries. During the half. year. ending July 5, 1848, the number of vessels which arrived !11 Gloucester, from foieign ports, amounted to 224 in the corresponding period last year the number was 101. There is now to be seen in a pond, at Wootton Basset, the property of J. Joseph Brown, of Bethnal-green. London, has treated 1,600 of his poor parishioners to a railway.trip into the country, where they passed a joyous holiday. The select committee appointed to prepare the militia esti mates for the year 1849-50 have reported that the total charge for out-pensioners will amount to f 30,000, and for Local Mili- tiy to £ 900., being a decrease, as compared with the year 1848 of £4 100. A very ominous Parliamentary return upon pauperism has just been laid upon the table ot the house. It states that the fund expended last year in mere poor rates amounted to nearly eight millions sterling At St. Peter's Key, near Newcastle-upon-Tyne, a man worked himself up to such a pitch of fear of being attacked by the cholera that he actually committed suicide to avoid it. A bill has just been brought in by the Chancellor of the Exchequer and Air. Haytc.r, extending to the officers of the inland revenue the privilege of becoming members of The Excise Benevolent Fund Society." An expedition for California is being organized in Bristol. Those who take part in it are to be something between mer- chants aod soldiers, prepared to win gold and wear it, as well by courage as by commerce. The Waterloo Cicerone, Sergeant-Major Cattan, who had served in the memorable battle of Waterloo, as private in the 7th Hussars, and has for many years been the guide over the field, died a few days since. He was the author of a clever little work on Waterloo. A large number of Highlanders, of all ages and both sexes, have, within the last few days, emigrated to North America. The Duke of Argyle has assisted 360 to emigrate from the isfandofTyree. There is now living, in the parish of Swindon, a woman, named Betty Reynolds, who is in her one hundred and second year, and until recently she was able to walk several miles. lIer faculties still remain with slight appearance of decay. Out of a population of 25 millions, less than 100,000 con- tribute to the Income Tax. Wages are advancing in the manufacturing districts, owing to the briskness of trade. Joseph Bailey, jun., Esq., M.P,, of Easton Court, near Tenbury, generously returned ten per cent. to his tenants, upon payment of the Lady-day rents, on the 21st ultimo, and also allowed the bills for draining tiles. A gang of smashers, i.e., utterers of counterfeit coin, have just been apprehended at Gloucester. Indeed, the provincial towns appear to swarm with the rascals. There is not a newspaper which does not at this time give the most inspiriting accounts of the capital crops which may be this year expected. The potatoe disease has very few friends apparently, as its mention is scarcely ever made. Several persons are now receiving parochial relief at. Ross, who, three months since, were in affluence. f A farmer, in Suffolk, has been fined £ 1, and costs, or drawing blood" from an old woman whom he caUed a witch by scratching her head with a nail. He said she had bewitched him In London, a police-constable named Palmer, has been committed for trial on a number of charges of robbery from his fellow constables. At Chichester, two children, aged respectively six and three yeais, have been poisoned by eating some of the leaves of the savin tree. The fishermen on the rifer Severn, at Oldbury, have peti- tioned parliament against the present law for the preservation of the salmon fisheries, alleging that it is wholly ineffective for the purpose intended, whilst it gives unnecessary trouble to the petitioners. On Saturday night the Right Hon. the Lord Mayor of London entertained at the Mansion-house the members of the Itoyal Society, the Royal Academy, ihe Society of Arts, with several distinguished names in general literature.
