'HE RUtNED MY W!FE. It Miiiionaire's Revenge. TERRtBLE THEATRE TRAGEDY. MAN K!LLED BY COUNTESS'S BROTHER. New York, Tuesday.—A terrible scene was witnessed at the Madison-square Roof Garden Theatre last mght. During a. performa-nce be- fore a crowded audience Mr Harry S. Thaw. of Pittsburg,' shot Mr Stamford White, a. well. known architect, who fell dead on the spot. The audience rose in a panic, and the perform- ance was at once stopped. Mr White was taken quite off his guard. and did nob know whab struck him. Three bullets were fired, two of which took enecb—both in the back. Mr Thaw, who wa.a outwardly calm, rejoined his wife at the table where be had left her. She waa formerly Evelyn Nesbit, and was a. model. She is vefy beautiful. When he was arrested Mr Thaw said to her, He ruined you, and I have got him." Both Mr Stafford White and Mr Thaw are millionaires. It was near the end of the light opera. I Mam.zeiie Champagne," that the shooting took. place. Mr Stanford White was a member of the nrm of McKim, Mead. and White, which has df signed many of the most notable buildings in New York, including Madison-square Garden, the scene of last, night's tragedy. It was through Mr White's influence that Evelyn Nesbit went on the stage before her marriage.—Router. Detaits of the Tragedy. New York, Tuesday.—Mr Stanford White, the victim of last night's tragedy at the Madison-square Garden, was 53 years of age and a millionaire, and well-known as an archi- tect and art connoisseur. Besides the Madison- square Gardens, he designed the tower of the Hall of Fame and other well -known structures inNewYork. Mr White, with several friends, was witness- ing a performance of MamzeUe Champagne on the roof garden. Mr Harry Thaw, the well- known Pittsburg millionaire, and his wife, formerly Miss Florence Nesbitt, were also at the concert. About 11 o'clock Mr Thaw sauntered away from the seat where his wife was sitting. Mrs Thaw appeared perfectly serene, and her countenance showd no sign of apprehension. It was clear she had no knowieage of the com- ing tragedy. Mr Thaw strolled among the tables seem- ingly at ease, but be never kept his eyes from Mr White. A comedian had just finished singing, I could love a million girls," a song with a short chorus, when Mr Thaw whipped out a revolver, I aimed at Mr White's head, and pulled the trigger. The first shot missed, but he quickly nred twice again in succession. Both bullets struck Mr White in the back, and he fell on the floor. Mr Thaw remained to outward appearance perfectly calm when he was seized and his weapon taken away. Well," he said, he ruined my wife and I got him." The crowd at the tables thought the shots were part of the performance until a young woman screamed, Oh, my God. he's dead." Aware then that a tragedy had occurred, the whole assembly jumped up in a state of intense excitement. A dozen women fainted, and there was every appearance of a coming panic. The stage manager, however, had the pre- sence of mind to jump on one of the tables and shout, "Keep still; it's all right." His state- ment quietened the crowd. The performance was also resumed for a few minutes, and the music quickly restored order. A little later the stage was cleared, and the audience dismissed. The doctor who had been summoned pro. nounced Mr Whilst dead, and the waiters covered the body with a tablecloth. Mr Thaw was arrested by a fireman and a. policeman. He made no resistance, simply saying, He deserved it, I can prove it. He ruined my wife and left her helpless." He stepped into the lift to go down to the street, His wife was allowed to accompany him.a&d on the way down said to him, "Oh. Harry, why did you do it. Harry ?" He kissed her and answered, It's all right; he ruined you and I cxedhim. It's all ngbt." Mr Thaw, under the impression that Mr Andrew Carnegie was in the United States, tr)ed to send him a message, saying. I'm in trouble," but he was informed that Mr Car- negie was in Europe. Mr Thaw was taken to a police station in the Tenderloin district, and lockedup. Mrs Thaw drove home in her carriage. The arrested man is the brother cf the Coun- tess of Yarmouth. He intended to sail for England to-morrow.—Central News. Ptea of Emotiona! insanity. New York, Tuesday.—Like any ordinary criminal. Mr Il.a.rry.KendaH Thaw was con- veyed in a pail-a! waggon to the police h,ad- quarters, was photographed for the rogues' galiery," and was subsequently arraigned in thj police court aud remanded in the custody of the Coroner, no bai] being allowed. The defc>nce will be a pIe;), of emotional insanity. For a week past he had gone about a.rmed, and his peculiar behaviour had excited remark: Mr Thaw was an inveterate cigarette smoker, and ever since his college days bis eccentric exploits had attracted attention in London. Paris and New York. Shortly before the tragedy an actor who was piaying in the musical farce strode to the footlights and melo- dramatically exciaimed, Here is the spot where the hero s:ays the villain." To this the comedian retorted, "We will nght with pis- tols." Sheltered by the shrubbery. Mr Thaw had been nervously pacing up and down the passages, keeping his eye on Mr White. Then ne walked quietly up to him, and in a drawl- ing tone said, You have ruined my wife (or lite). and nred the shots which took fatal egect. It is that Mr White was in the habit of taunting Mr Thaw whenever they met on the subject of the former's earlier friendship with the latter's wife, and that it was this which aroused the prisoner's fury. When arrested Mr Thaw had an excited colloquy with the policeman, who cannot say with certainty whether it was his wife or his life that be declared to ba.ve been ruined. He is positive, however, that the prisoner said That man ruined my home. I guess ho won't ruin any more homes," and when told that White was dead he remarked, I'm d—— glad I made a good job of it." The policeman further states that Mrs Thaw rushed up and, embracing her husband, cried, On, Harry, I did not think you would do it that way," to which the prisoner re- plied,"It'sall right." On the way to the police station Mr Thaw, who was nervous and pale, referred to the dinner earlier in the evening at the Cafe Martin, where Mr White and his friends had sat on the Terrace while the prisoner and his friends were dining in the main saloon. Mrs Thaw was visibly nervous when she saw Mr White. The accused states that he was sitting apart for a moment, when he suddenly noticed that his wife was very pate, and was beginning to shiver. Thinkirg sh.jwas U). he inquired by signs what was the matter. She then wrote a. note, and sent a, waiter round the table with it. In the note she said that blackguard was there." Then," continued the prisoner. I turned and saw that fat scoundrel sitting there big and healthy, and when I saw how she was the incident aroused my rage." Alter commttting the crime Thaw appeared quite sober, but be had drunk considerably in the course of the evening, and it was stated that he was addicted to mormne. He now occupies a cell in murder row of Tombs Prison. One of the lawyers retained in the case, in reply to questions 'as to what the defence would be, said, Thaw was crazy, of course he was as mad as a March hare. The stories bis wife is alleged to have told about White were all hallucinations, and he shot an innocent maji like any other crazy man would." Mr and Mrs Thaw were to ha ye sailed for Europe to-morrow on a visit to the former's sister, who is the Countess of Yarmouth. Mr Thaw's mother sailed for Europe by the Min- neapolis on the 22rdinst., and will probably not hear of the tragedy till she arrives, as the vessel is not fitted with wireless apparatus._ Press Association Special Telegram. Countess of Yarmouth's Distress. An Evcsham correspondent on Tuesday con- veved to the Earl of Yarmouth at Park Halt, Salford Priors, the news of the affair. His Lordship at once proceeded to acquaint the Countess with the sad news, which greatly dis- tressed her. The Eaj'1 said he could not assign any reason for the tragedy, but there wag no doubt there had been serious differences be- tween Mr Thaw and Mr White. Mrs Thaw's Statement. The evening papers quote Mrs Thaw as saying, Harry did just the right thing. He did a noble act. I tried but could not persuade White to cease his persecution of me. Every time I came within his reach I was sure to be annoyed by him. I loved Harry, and wished to get away from everythiog that reminded me of my old life. It was cruel of White to persist in reminding me Qfit, and to continue hiseSorts to see me and make appointments with me. The world should be rid of men like White."— Press Association Special Telegram.
