The continued popularity and pre-eminent position of BEECHAM'S TltiLS is explained by the universal law of cause and effect. They have been proved by the public test of over 50 years to be all that is claimed for them, hence their continued crowth in demand and favour. Many new preparations during that time have been introduced to the public, and by bold statements and ingenjous de7icc:1 have indnced a temporary brisk demand, but time and trial show their rea.1 value, a.nd they sink into obscurity, only to be followed by other so-called remedies with a similar shortlived career, and the consequent host ol dissatisfied purchasers. THE CHURCHES.
THE CHURCHES. The Roman Catholic deputation, which, as has been officially made known to Cardinal Vaughan, the King will be pleased to receive in eudiencc, will probably wait upon the Sovereign in Low Week, when all the members of tie Roman Catholic hierarchy will be assembled for their annual meeting at Archbishop's House. With the deputation of bishops will be asso- ciated, for the occasion, certain members of the Roman Catholic Union-and the Roman Catholic School Committee, among whom ara the Duke of Norfolk, the Marquis of Ripou, the Earl of Denbigh, Viscount Llandaff, and Lords Herries, Clifford, Howard of Glossop, and Brampton. Up to the present time the Roman Catholic body has not been upon the privileged list "—that is to say, was not among those who had ac- quired the right to be received by the Sovereign. On Monday rn interesting presentation was made at a public meeting to the Rev. David Lewis, of Dock Congregational Chapel, Llanelly, in commemoration of his 30 years' pastorate* He was given an illuminated address and a pair of gold-rimmed spectacles, whilst Mrs Lems was presented with a gold watch. Mr Lewis is a. well-known composer of englynion, and has written several hymns. The report of ths Church of Ireland just issued shows that the total income during the year was £ 525,458. The investments in securi- ties amount to £7,627,424. At Caerau, a new district in the North Ward of Maesteg, the various denominations cf the Welsh Nonconformists have erected capacious and substantial places of worship, and OIl Sunday an English cause was inaugurated at o!d Hermon, now Bethany Chapel. The Revs. W. D. O. Jones, Trinity, and W. F. Phillips, Bala, offici- ated at the services. Chiefly through the energy of Mr D. Davies, D.C., the chapel, which has been, purchased and renovated at a cost of £126, I has been handsel over free of debt to the Forward Movement Committee of the Calvmistic Method- ists. Soar Welsh Independent Church, Maes- teg, proposes to erect a new chapel on a more con venient site at an early date. INSECTS AS FOOD.
INSECTS AS FOOD. The Pa-Ôs correspondent of the" Daily News writes :—A French entomologist, M. Dagin, recommends insects as an article of food. He speaks with authority, having not only read through the whole literature of insect-eating, but having himself tasted several hundreds of species raw, boiled, fried, broiled, roasted, and hashed. He has even eaten spiders, prepared according to the following recipe :—" Take a plamp spider, remove the legs and skin. rub over with butter, and swallow. However, he does not recommend them, but this may be prejudice on his part. He states two objections to spiders. They are not insects, and they feed on animal food. Cock- roaches are a foundation for delicious soup. M. Dagin fo"ows the recipe given by Senator Teste- lin in a speech delivered in the Senate 071 February 12th, 1S7S :—" Pound yonr cockroaches in a mortar put in a sieve, and pour in boil- ing water 0'= beef stock." Connoisseurs prefer this to real bisque. M. Wilfrid de Fcnvielle, the French scientist, prefers the cockroaches in the larval state. The perfect insect may be shelled and eaten like a slnimp that way Dr. Gastier, member of the National Assembly of 184S, used to eat them. Cater- pillars are a light food of easy diges- tion. Not only African and American native race's, but Frenchmen appreciate them. M. de Lalande. astronomer, had dinner every Saturday wiLll 'he zoologist, d'lsjonvalle. Mpdame d'lsjonvalle, who knew his taste, collectect in the afternoon aU the cater- pillars she could find in her garden and served them on a plate to her guest. The most popular insect food is the locust. It is eaten fried, dried in the sun, boiled in milk fa Morocco recipe), or served with rice as in Madagascar. The Jesuit Father Cambone thinks that locust flour might become popular in Europe as a condiment. Tra- vellers' opinions on locusts differ. Amicis finds they taste like shrimps, Niebnhr like sardines, Livingstone like caviare.
_.---------._---PEAT AS FUEL
PEAT AS FUEL Science has recently explored with startling results the possibilities of peat as a fuel, and mechanical ingenuity has devised plant which promises to convert the Irish bog into a more valuable property than the Russian petroleum field' J3y these new methods, of which certain details have been comrminicatcd to the Express," promise is given of an extraordinary revolution in the fuel problem. Machinery has been devised by means of which the moisture of the raw peat is absorbed and complete disintegration effected at one simple and rapid operation without the aid of either ldln or grinder. It is no longer a clumsy and imperfect operation months, but almost one of minutes only. Plant for the working daily of 1,000 cubic yards Plant for the working daily of 1,000 cubic yards of bog can be readily installed, and these 1,000 yards will yield 300 tons of peat fuel at a cost of 3s 6d to 5s per ton. A step further converts these 300 tons into peat charcoal, a product equal to the b<:>t ordinary charcoal, at an average cost of 15s to 17s per ton. The new peat fuel is practically smokeless and I odourless, being almost free from carbon or hydro-carbon, excepting as primarily contained in the peat. Its specific gravity, calorific pro- perties, and c'canliness are also very powerful recommendations. It burns with a brilliant flame, yields immense heat, and is remarkably lasting. For "steam and naval purposes the peat is sub- jected to special treatment. I When Ireland, with her 3.000,000 acres of peat bogs, and the rest of the kingdom with two and a half millions, are taken into account, there is certainly a call for the new process. — ■ -I, —, 11

Frottl the moment wo started in the morning until stopped in the afteroon I had to stand deep in the water at the bottom of the b.at, -lig" in hand. Fifteen minutes now elapsed without 0^ coming across troops of hippos, and tbeS" became a regular terror. j Once the hippos were so close that I waJrlfIIJ to take a photograph of them. Suddenly a laJt?? bull got his head clean out of the water, open0^ his month, and made straight for us. I did 310 feel like taking a snapshot, but seized by S.bore- The beast dived, and three seconds later only four feet from the boat. I scarce knew io do. If I fired and shot him, the rate at he was going would bring him right under boat, and just one single dying struggle WOid'V send us flying in the air. Just as I covered him my man shot beast.. Luckily there was a large stretch of shai^ water close to us, and we got into it behind ths infuriated monster, who had only wounded, was roaring, plunging, and trying get at us. We turned the boat round, and th^ witnessed a wonderful sight. Badly the hippo fell on his knees, rose out of water, tried to get on the sand bank, fen ba^' rolling over, and ultimately forced his Vif!¡¡ towards us. Bang went my 8-bcrre at thirty yards, incredible as it may seem, the bullet struck^' his back, and glanced off, cutting a deep fnrJ^j in his skin. A second shot bit him, and he over, but recovered his footing, und we PoT £ « lead into him, and, after a minute's terriP struggles, he rolled round and died. "We had settled one beast, but all round the river was alive with others. There were least 40, and there might have been To shoot at another hippo meant only j increase our danger. I therefore decided to all my men fire volleys into the water between go and the hippos, and to our great relief the who herd dived aud went up stream. For five days this sort of thing went on- ™ sometimes found the stream absolutely obstr0 ted with the herds. Twice we shot some of charging us, and once we were followed j twenty minutes by a huge bull, who, luckily, some fifty yards behind us."
