VIOLENCE AND ROBBERY AT ST.…
VIOLENCE AND ROBBERY AT ST. NICHOLAS, NEAR CARDIFF. Late on Saturday night a. Mr. Edward Jenkins Staler, of Lancadle, was returning home, when ue.r the top of the hill at St. Nicholas, about a quarter < f 4 mile from any house, he was attacked, it is believed by three men who are thought to be tramps. He was tn a pony trap, and it is thought, from the track of the wheels, that a piece of timber was thrust between the spokes. He was robbed < f a gold watch, £ 6 in |°ld, and some silver, and very severely beaten. After Jhe attack, which seemed to have tcsjeii place in the he succeeded in reaching the Three runs, St. Nicholas. He had then only Ids trousers and shirt 00, the robbers having rilled his pockets and nearly dipped him. He was bleeding seriously from two Jarful wounds at the back of the head, evidently in- flicted with a thick stick. He was just able to s ate that he was attacked in coming up the hill, when he became insensible. The police-constable at St. Nicho- ls knew him, and after his wounds had been dressed by the landlady, who used tobacco to stop the bleed- *ug, he was driven home, and was then attended by ^r- Phillip3, of Cowbridge, who gave no hope of his *ecovery. Mr. Jenkins is well known at Cardiff Bristol, having attended the corn markets at both places for some years. He left Cardiff On Saturday night, about eleven o'clock, luid was travelling home alone with a spirited pony, but the bill i.s very steep, he was no doubt walking the pony up the hill. On Saturday night three men, hav- ing the appearance of tramps, called at the Dusty Forge, a public house, two miles off, and had some beer in the passage. They were afterwards si en lurking about the road, and they are suspected. On Sunday morning near the top of the hill there was a large pool of blood and it is supposed that he was attacked at this place. There ia also the mark of a skidded" wheel on the road. On Sunday a blud- geon covered with blood, was found in a hedge close by the pool of blood. On the Saturday night some butchers returning from the Cardiff market picked up the seat of a trap, the coat, waistcoat and hat of Mr Jenkins. The pockcts ot'the-coat and waistcoat had been cut open and the contents taken. The 'watch of Mr Jenkins has his name upon it, and that may probably lead to the detection of the parties. The Police are on the track of three men wh„ called at -Dusty Forge and had some beer on Saturday ni»h\ Three men of similar appearance left Cardiff Work- house on Saturday moining. Mr Jenkins was We'|i ku wn at Cardiff, and was much respected.

THE RUATYI'KADD IJIAABLEII.…
THE RUATYI'KADD IJIAABLEII. •' Colonel Yolland, on Friday, examined several of the officials on points which were not mentioned at the Coroner's iuquest. He condemned the practice of re- lying on the verbal expreesions used by signalmen, 411a recommended the establishment of out-door sig- na.ls. The adjourned inquiry into the cause of death of the twelve persons who were killed in the recent acci- dent near the Pontypridd Junction, was resumed on Monday morning, before Mr. C. B. Reece. Mr. Hur- *aa, traffic manager cf the Taff Vale Company, was Recalled, and gave some further evidence respecting the length of the north curve, &c. In reply to Mr. Stevens, who appeared for Robots, the signalman, Jbe witness said lie was not prepared to say it eitaer ^llis or Roberts had seeu the special instructions. A ?°pv was sent to every signalman lu September, IS/o, V Roberts only went to the North Junction r,ox m 1876. Peter Griffiths, brakesman of the Lou-bridge &in, recalled, said that, to the best of his knowledge, Roberts had never given him ft signal or order to go 011 except from his box before the day of the accificnt. Sometimes the gong was sounded before he reached the points. On the Saturday of the accident the tram tad been standing still fully two minutes before it Started. Witnessed not hear the gong all that time. —-Stephen Ellis, signalman, recalled, said that he had the pen iu his hand, and was entering the time thrx tie Rhondda train passed, when the collision took Place. He did not give any sigual whatever to the ■North Junction signal-box, but made an entry in ^ls hook at 4.15 that the north curve line was cleat, i he entry was subsequently scratched out, as wItness thought he ought not to have entered it until he had *ally given the signal-Some further evidence having beea adduced, Mr. Stevens, on behalf ot Roberts, addressed the jury, saying that he felt sure that they, after viewing all the circumstances of the case, would pause before they found his client guilty of man. slaughter. Roberts had been in the employ of the Company for thirty years, and bore an excellent cha- racter. On Saturday week he went down from his box to speak to the driver. He thought he heard one PzOug sound, and at once despatched his train. He toight have been guilty of an error of judgment, but Surely not of any act for which he could be brought to trial on a charge of manslaughter.—The Coroner, in Summing up the ca"e, said that Colonel Yolland, who had recently visited the line, had complained of its forking, and of the deficiency of out-door signals for the guidance of drivers, and had made certain recom- mendations which the Company were about to adopt. He (the Coroner) fully saw the importance of h i, iug •ther agencies to rely on than that of the mere word of a signalman, but there was no doubt but that so long as the signalman was in power he was virtually respon- sible for any error that might occur. It would be a question for the juiy to decide whether or no they thought Roberts heard the gong sound before he des- patched the train, but even if he did, that would I hardly exonerate him from a charge of carelessness for Hot tirst going into the box and seeiug if the indicator pointed to the road being clear.—After the absence of i the jury for one hour, they returned into the Board- room, and gave the following verdict — That twelve persons (names mentioned) met their deaths in conse- quence of a collision by a train from the North Junc- persons (names mentioned) met their deaths in conse- quence of a by a, train from the North Junc- tion running into one on the Rhondda line on Satur- day week, and thnt the collision was due to the ne- gleet of William Roberts, signalman at the North Junction signal box, and we further recommend that the recommendation of Colonel Yolland with respect to the establishment of outdoor signals be carried out at once."—Roberts was then brought up and formally j committed to take his trial, bail being accepted for his appearance.—Prior to the Court breaking up the fore- man of the jury said—Out of consideration of the long and faithful services rendered the Taff Vale Com- pany by William Roberts, we trust he may still be Continued in their employ." It is stated on guud authority that the view from the North Junction signal box is very defective through trees growing on the opposite curve, the view another direction being interfered with in conse- quence of a house near the line having been built since ■he curve was constructed. It is also asserted that Col. *uch, who gave the necessary Board of Trade certifi- cate for the working of this connecting curve, men- tloued the circumstance of the trees being iu the way, ■^d that it was then understood that th y would be cuti down. Had this been done a driver backing a tfain would probably have been able to see any sign d *or recall or to stop that might have been given liorn the north signal-box befoie he had p-ssed it. Patients at the lntirmary contiuue to progress to e satisfaction of their medical attendants. It is a ed that electric bells have recently been fitted up a house near to the North Junction lignal-box, and rft was these bells which Roberts, who w; s out- his lodge at the time, heard when he ordered the 0vvbridge train to go back through the cutting, ————————=-== J

Alexander), I TliOM-AS seaman, was charged on a summons with refusing duty on board the steamship Peace, iu Waterfonl river, and with attempting to stab the captain while on a voyage to Carriitf. Mr. Downing appeared on behalf of the captain, and explaiued the nature of the case. Thomas Kirby, master of the steamship Peace, of Whitby, produced the ship's register, and the articles which the prisoner had signed iu the witness s presence in Dublin. On the 2t5th inst. his ^e-sse|_ ^vas in Waterford river, getting under weigh. Die defen- dant came up on to the bridge, and asked the witness to pay a bill of £ 2 5s. Witness refused, and being on the pilot bridge alone with the telegraph, told the defendant to go away. The latter used had language, and said he would make the witness pay the hill. The defendant came on to the top of the pilot bridge, and witness put his hand on him, and told him to go down. The defendant then pulled him away from the telegraph. Witness was about to give an order to the engine-room through the telegraph. The defen- dant put his hand to his side and handled a knife, which witness was rather scared of. It was a sheath knife, and witness got hold of it. The man then tried to regain possession of the knife, but the mate came to witness's assistance/and the weapon was thrown overboard. The defendant had refused duty five days before. He ha.d been drinking, but was not drunk. The defendant alleged, on the other hand, that the captain had threatened to stab him with his own knife. Tiiumas Vasey, mate of the vessel, was called on to the bridge. He saw the captain and Power struggling. Witne.s took hold of Power, and parted the two men. He heard the captain give orders to Power. The defendant called August Larsen, seaman, who said he saw what had happened. The captain, on being asked to pay the bill went on the bridge. The defendant followed, and was ordered down several times. He saw the defendant trying to get clear from the captain. Had never seen anything wrong with the defendant before. Charles Bell, another seaman, gave similar evidence for the defence. The magistrates considered this to bo a very serious case, and for the assault on the captain the defendant would be sent to prison for 12 weeks with hard labour.
----------ATTEMPTED MURDERS…
ATTEMPTED MURDERS AT SWANSEA. A determined attempt to murder his wife and brother-in-law was made by a man named Daniel Guy, at Swansea, on Sunday. Guy, who is well-known in Swansea, lived, with his wife, in apartments let to him by her brother, John Phillips, at 32, New Oxford- street. Between twelve and one o'clock Guy and his wife bad a dispute, and shortly before one o'clock they went upstairs in order to retire for the night. Shortly afterwards Phillips heard three shots, and rushed into the bedroom occupied by his sister and her husband. With an oath Guy said, "IIL serve you the same," and immediately lired with a revolver at Phillips. Luckily the ball missed him, struck the opposite wall, aud rebounded under the bed, where it was found by Insuector Holland. Information having been given to the police, a search was instituted, aud about two o'clock Guy was found in a yard belonging to Mr. Daniel Jones, and situated opposite the Oxford street police-station. Police-constable Lewis heard a noise in the yard, and on going inside he saw the prisoner, who in all probability went there to conceal himself. When he was taken into custody he was very excited, but did not appear to be under the in- fluence of drink. The motive of the crime would appear to have been jealousy, as the injured woman was out late on Saturday night, which led to the quarrel with her husband. The woman was struck in the chest and, also in the back. It is the doctor's opinion, that there is no immediate danger.
THE ABERCARN EXPLOSION.
THE ABERCARN EXPLOSION. OPERATIONS AT THE PIT. Another week or so must elapse before there is any probability of reaching the bodies of the men who met their deaths in the explosion of the Ilth September. The task of emptying the pit of water is still going on, and although there is a passage for air, yet it is so un- satisfactory that a general belief is entertained that a heavy fall must have occurred in the workings so as to prevent anything like a free passage of air. The con- r5 struction of a shed for receiving the remains of the unfortunate victims is completed, and every arrange. nn-nt devised for facilitating that which cannot fail to be, under the best regulated plaus, a harrowing and most heartrending proceeding. The delay and the Z, suspense occasioned thereby is giving rise to great dis- satisfaction amongst the poor widows and children who have been so painfully bereft. It were almost better that no hope had beea held out to them that the re- mains of their loved ones would ever be recovered, than to perpetuate such distressing suspense. In most disasters and calamities time effaces the remembrance of harrowing scenes, but the awful desolutiou and de- struction wrought by the explosion at Abercarn does not appear to wear away. Distress and anguish in many homes remain as bitter as ever, and those who weep and wail for the dead will not be pacitied unti! they have once more beheld the charred and decom- posed forms, and know that they have been consigned to the earth by the hands of themselves or thoir riends.
THE BISHOP OF ST. DAVID'S…
THE BISHOP OF ST. DAVID'S ON THE ABERCARN EXPLOSION. On Sunday morning the Right Rev. Dr. Basi! Jones, Lord LSisnop » f St. David's, at St. Peter's parish church, Carmarthen, preached a sermon on behalf of the above fund. The Bishop chose as his text the 9th verse of the lotn chapter of St. Luke's Gospel, "And I sayuutoyou make to yourselves friends ot the mammon of unrighteousness: that, when ye fail, they may receive you into everlasting habitations." During the sermon his Lordship said I am requested to appeal to you to-day for one of the cases of special and ex- ceptionable distress. This has been a year of dreadful casualties. We have hardly recovered from the shock of one before it is almost driven from our recollection hy another even more and no disaster involv- ing more serious consequences has occurred than that one which forms the ground of my appeal to-day. The collision 011 the Thames swept away a large number of victims, but did not leave ao many depen- dents. In the Abercarn explosion every one of the dead had some one dependent on them. It was the bread-winner who was swept away, and the wife. child, or aged parents left, unless relieved by the bread of charity, to starve. I understand that moie than 500 persous have been deprived of their means of support by this explosion. Thiuk what that means. Five hundred is the population of a good-sized parish more than the population of many parishes in this diocese—and as many as one clergyman can properly look utter. Thiuk of the entire population of a parish beiiv suddenly plunged into a state of starvation, for i that°is what it really means unless kindly help is afforded. Much has been doue to alleviate this dis- tress but although your bounty may come late, it will he none the less acceptable. Most of the suffereis are our countrymen in the narrowest sense. They speak tin; language most dear to the hearts of many present. Tiicv are "our neighbours" in a narrower sense than 1, our Lord means in the parable of the Good Samaritan. A short time ago many of us sent relief to India and to the Bulgarians, the Turks, and others, who ■« r'e neighbours in the sense of bein^ fellow- e itures but the sufferers by the Abercarn disaster are doubly our neighbours. Therefore, let us use some of that money which is not, I hope, unjustly gotten, to pur- chase for ourselves friends ot the widows aud orphans left by this calamity, and at last, when we shall have rendered up our stewardship, may they receive us into some of those habitations which, I trust, are being prepared for us.
MINERS' PERMANENT RELIEF FUND.
MINERS' PERMANENT RELIEF FUND. The High Sheriff ot Glamorganshire presided over a meeting held 011 Monday in the Cardiff Town-hall, to t) the proposed Miners' Permanent Relief Fund for South Wales, and proposed a vesolutiou in support of the society. Mr. Vivian, M.P., seconded the propo- rtion, which was carried. Lord Aberdare also spoke. It pointed out by several speakers that the new fund would have a beueficial effect, and would reach •Tinv sufferers by small accidents. Suffer, r3 by large accidents generally obtained public sympathy ami y; i wTiiowi of men who wer>: killed in minor accidents bad often to rely on parish relief.
