[ALL EIGHTS RESERVED1 THE MYSTERY OF THE JADE EYE, By FERGUS HUME, Author of "The Mystery of a. Hansom Cab," ''The Bishop's Secret," &c. CHAPTER 11, COUNT IVAN'S QUEST. "You would betray me, Count Ivan." "Not at all," replied the Russian coolly. "You make a mistake, Hafiz. I would merely have a portion of the plunder." "It is not plunder," retorted the Parsee with a scowl, "Janshee is rightfully mine. I worship no idols, but I make use of this one to obtain all the money I can. Ah! I was a fool to tell you. Count Ivan." The Russian shrugged his shoulders. "I don't dispute that," said he with a sneer; "even gratitude would not have made me so false to my own interests. But I saved your life. so I suppose it was only human that you should tell me your secret." "I wish I had been drowned. Count Ivan. But you saved me when I fell overboard off Suez, and I wished to repay you. But I should have kept my secret and repaid you out of my wealth when it came. Now-" "I am trying to find out the secret for my- self," said Ivan. "that is why I advertise for the Jade Eye. If it comes into my posses- sion-" "If it does," interrupted the other rapidly, "what can you do? You will have the Eye, but you do not know where Janshee is to be found." "Bah! The man who brings me the Eye will know where the body of your idol is. In fact. he may bring the whole thing with him." "I tell you no. The Eye has been taken away from the idol. The Eye is here, the body of Janshee is there. Only when they are brought together will prosperity come. I "YOU HAVE NOT GOT THE JADE EYE, YET," SNARLED HAFIZ. know where the idol is. But I won't tell you. I have told you too much already, and you wish to betray me." Count Ivan shrugged, and looked out of the window. He was a tall, fair man. with steel- blue eyes, cold and sinister. His figure was good, his face handsome, and he was ele- gantly dressed. A high-bred man. and a dan- gerous one. That was the impression pro- duced by Count Ivan on the majority of the people he consorted with. The minority, being fools, trusted him. and paid for their trust. Hafiz. the Parsee. was one of these, and he now sat gnawing his fingers, and cursing the man who was in possession of his secret. Hafiz was short and yellow-skinned, and oily in his looks. Yet he was venomous enough at the present moment. Not that Ivan car"d. In the course of his adventurous life he had met with more than one Hafiz. "After ail," said he, turning from the win- dow. "I do not see why we should not work together. It is probable that the Jade Eye will come into my possession. It must be in England, and five hundred pounds for such a trumpery object will be sufficient to bribe the person in whose possession it now is. Well. then. Hafiz, I shall have the key. You know where the lock is. Let us put them together and share.. "No." cried the man rising, with an ugly light in his eyes. "If you get that Jade Eye you can do nothing with it. I know where the idol is, and I keep my secret. If you get the key and hand it to me, I'll make you rich, but, I will not give you half." "Then I won't do business," said Ivan reso- lutely; "you can go. Hafiz! When I have the key—that is the Jade key—I'll let you know, and repeat my offer. Should you refuse I will search for the idol Janshee on my own account. An advertisement will bring that as well as the Jade Eye." "You have not got the Eye yet," said Hafiz savagely, and glided towards the door. "Oh! I will keep my secret. All shall be mine." "There are two opinions about that." sneered the Count, whereat Hafiz departed with'a snarl. His looks would have frightened many a man, but the Russian was steeled to horrors. His past was as adventurous as that of Sinbad the Sailor. When the Parsee had gone Ivan walked to ;i side table littered with photographs, and picking up one proceeded to examine it with a look of adoration in his usually cold eyes. The photograph was that of Rebekah Salt, and in it she looked even more than usually beautiful. Ivan had the Oriental contempt for women, yet he felt that he could fall on his knees and worship the original. But she kept him at arm's length. In his ignorance he ascribed this to the fact that the gifts he had sent her, and which she had returned, were not sufficiently costly. "If I were only rich—rich." he murmured pacing *the room, "I would buy her—all women can be bought. I would take her to the south and build for her a place worthy of such a divine creature. But I can do nothing until I get the Jade Eye, and not even then unless I can wring the secret out of Hafiz. Where can that idol be? In England I know; but England is not a email island. No." At this moment his servant, a silent, di»- creet man. of gigantic stature, entered and handed him a card. Ivan read thereon tha name of Mr. John Tyson, and gave orders that the visitor should be admitted, wonder- ing if he had come to see him in answer to the advertisement. As a matter of fact. Jack had come on some such errand, but his infor- mation was of a sort other than Count Ivan expected. The Russian was surprised when a hand- some young gentleman presented himself, and wondered if, after all. this visitor had really come to give information about tha Jade Eye. He rapidly took in Tyson's appear- rance, his bronzed face, his trim moustache, and curly black locks. Jack was a very hand- some man. and knew the value of his own looks so well that he was always most parti- cular about his dress, and, although not rich. contrived to look well-groomed and smart. On his side he examined Rebekah's adorei- closely, and immediately conceived a distaste for his personality. Ivan was a gentleman, c.nd good-looking, but there was about him a reckless air which Tyson mistrusted. He. therefore, placed himself on his guard, and waited for his host to commence the convar- eation. "Good morning, Mr. Tyson." said Ivan. placing a chair. "Will you not be seated?" a.nd he sat down. also. "Your business, Mr. Tyson ?'* "I have come about the advertisement. Count," said Jack frankly. Ivan with difficulty repressed a start. The answer had come sooner than he had expected. and he exullingly thought that he had won one point in the game against Hafiz. But het reckoned wrongly, as he soon learned. "Ah!" he replied, "the advertisement! I have had it in every London paper for a week." "For a week!" echoed Tyson surprised. "I only saw it this morning. It was pointed out to me by-" he looked directly at the Russian, "Miss Salt." Ivan, rose to his feet, and his pale faca flushed. "Miss Rebekah Salt! You know her tIlen. sir?" "All the world knows her. Count. A cele- brated dancer like Miss Salt does not pasa uni.oticcd. But it so happens that I know hep better than most people. We were fast friends before she became famous, and I am now painting her picture for the Academy." "Happy Mr. Tyson!" sighed the Count. "She will be with you. then, for hours at a time. I wish I were in your place "You admire Miss Salt then?" "I worship her." declared the Rtfesian fiercely. "She is the most beautiful of all women. and the coldest. I send her gifts, she returns them; and I—but this is of no interest to you. Mr. Tyson." lIe paused, and looked at Jack, hesitatingly. "One word, Mr. Tyson, before we come to business. Is Miss Salt engaged to be married?" "No. Not that I know of. But she has many admirers." Ivan snapped his fingers. "La, la, la, la!'OIf he said gaily. "I am one of them, and th< richest will win." "Not Miss Salt," said Jack gravely; "she i. a good woman." "Oh; of course," retorted haW- ironically. "all women are good, or at least we tell them so. Well. I would not have my future Countesa otherwise. For. mark you. Mr. Tyson, I wish to make that glorious creature my wife. t have an ancient name, much money, large estates, and a high position in Russia." Jack bowed gravely, his steady eyes on the sinister face. "I congratulate you. Count, he said, "but Miss Salt is not to be bribed." "We shall see. I—" he broke off again. "Bah! here I am talking like a school-boy about matters which concern only myself. Let us dismiss that angel from our thought* He kissed his hand to the photograph. "A difficult, but necessary task. Mr. Tyson. And now, sir?" Ivan straightened himself, and once more became cool and hard, "your errand? The Jade EyeJ You have it?" "Indeed, no. I came to learn why you advertised for it." 4AImn frowned. "You ask too much." he said coldly. "I am not disposed to gratify an im. pertinent curiosity." "How do you know that my curiosity is im- pertinent, Count? I may be able to tell you something you would like to know." "About the Jade Eye?" "No. But about the idol from which tha eye was taken." "Janshee!" Ivan. who had sat down, was 00 his feet again, and much excited, "you know where Janshee is to be found?" "If Janshee is a bronze idol from the East with a head of Jade and hands to match. 1 do know where it is." "Tell me Mr. Tyson. Tell me." "Oh. dear me, no." replied Jack, (^engaging his arm from the grip of the Russian. "Aa yet I do not know your reason for advertising for the Jade Eye—the one eye of Jan- shee which is missing." said Jack emphatii cally. "you Bee I call the image by the nams you give it. But why it should be called so do not know. Perhaps you can tell met Oount?" (To be continued to-morrow.) (*Clopyright in the United St&t*o of Amwiod by D. T. PieroeU
