MONDAY, AUGUST 14, 1876. .
MONDAY, AUGUST 14, 1876. On Saturday the Merthyr magistrates had be- fore them the case of William Lloyd, who was charged on remand with having committed burg- lary in the Morlais Castle Inn. The case had previously been gone into at great length, but the magistrates on this occasion, not considering the evidence sufficient, dismissed the case. The Cardiff Guardians at their meeting on Saturday received the resignations of the IJlaster and the gnatron of the workhouse. Other officials having also recently resigned, it was resolved that l the Visiting Committee should be requested to consider al to whethar there should not be a change of the whole of the officials emploj^ t the workhouse. j, A Danish seaman, named Alfred Johnaoi, t 1 performed the remarkable feat of saitingfrii America to England in a boat only 20 fet length. He left America on the 15th Jun< a 3 landed at Abercastle, in Pembrokeshire, on Fiji Two coiliers were fined at the county )e-. sessions, held at Swansea, on aturday-o I. t smoking underground, at the Broad Oak CoLeC and the other for neglecting to report hii f what both knew to be a gross breach of the e latijDs of the mine. It was stated that a!thii| there was no gas at the spot where the sjikif 1 took place there was a large quantity of gas X t| mine some distance iff. Safety lamps are usd [ the mine in consequence of the danger arisintrca- gas. i 4 Several men employed at the Mormton 1 'd plate works, were lined at Swansea, on Saturd for leaving work without giving notice. Th contracts required that a month's notice ah be given before Leavirfg, but the defendants coming dissatisfied with the terms under w they were working off some orders, suddenly at work without having given any notice whateve In the House of Lords, on Saturday, sev Bills passed through committee, and others w also advance a stage. The consideration of ll amendments of the Commons to the Lords' amei! meats of the Merchant Shipping Bill was deferl to this evening. | In the House of Commons a discussion t4 raised by Mr Jenkins on a ruling as to m limitation of debates on the third reading! the Appropriation Bill. On the considl ation of the Lords' amendments to I Merchant Shipping Act, Mr Maclver moJ the rejection of the measure, and the motion i seconded by Captain Pirn. After a lengthy Gi cussion this motion was withdrawn, and the Lois amendments were adopted with sonje alteratioi The Elementary Education Provisiohal Ordl Confirntfa'tion (London) Bill was read a third ti' and passed, after the rejection of a motion p" posed by Mr Charley, that the debate < adjourned on the ground that the measurem opposed to the principles which Conservatives 1- held. The chairman and live other guardians of i Keighley union surrendered to the Sherft officers at Leeds, on Saturday, and were conveyj by railway to York Castle, in order to undergo H prisonment for their refusal to obey the Arrit mandamus issued against them by the Queen Bench. The police were unable to keep bacJil large and excited crowd, who insisted oh tf prisoners being allowed to travel first-class. A wtit has been issued by Mr Bass's committi of the Great Eastern Railway shareholders i straining Mr Parkes, the chairman of the coi pany, from exercising any powers as a directc The cemmittee allege that had the usual custom voting against candidates been adhered to Mesai Parkes and Trotten would have been thrown or, A very large secession from the miners'unionl said to have taken place in Warwickshire. A deputation from the Leicestershire a.. Derbyshire miners have been informed by some,i the employers in those districts that a reductil. of 10 per ceni; in the wages of the Workmen* absolutely necessary. The employers propost il their men will submit to a reduction of laai extent in order to meet the present exigencie ol the trade, to grant a 10 per cent increase in b' rate of-wages on the bt. week of November, wei it is hoped trade will be much improved. It is stated that Mr Disraeli's elevation to tlzi House of Lords will involve no change in the om' position of the Ministry. It is not deemed JTO bable, however, that this can hold good for anj length of time. A rumour is current that jord John Manners will be appointed to the Irivj Seal, and that his Lordship will be succeeded al the Post-office by Mr W. Smith. It is alsa t9* ported that Lord Sandon and Sir M. H. Bach are to be made members of the Cabinet. The trial of Richard Banner Oakley, of ha Co-operative Credit Bank, was concluded on Saturday. The jury, after three minutes' debe* ration, found the prisoner guilty, and tr. foal sentenced to five years' penal servitude.
EARL OF BEACONSFIELD.
EARL OF BEACONSFIELD. THE unfamiliar name which heads this artile shrouds from popular recognition one of the ma1 conspicuous and prominent figures in our modft Parliamentary annals. Mr DISRAELI existsix longer, and in his place stands the Earl oi BEACONSFIELD. The transformation, thoigl sudden and rapid at last, was not altogether UJe, pected. Mr DISRAELI'S constitution has recestl) given repeated indications of weakness, if nctoj decay. His frequent fits of indisposition, the tccn, sionally deadly pallor of his face, and -stlzei symptoms of suffering, have awakened solicitude of his friends, and it has for seme time been felt that rest and retirement too: exciting labours—which he has fairly earned 1y < life of exacting toil-were essential to his resOra tion to health, if not to the preservation. aflife But although the elevation of the PMMIE!>IINI3T<EI to the Peerage was not an altogether txexpected event-it was anticipated at ihe close of his last Premiership in 1868—the incident is,ne'ertheless, as we believe, an unprecedented on. Ther< is scarcely an instance of any eminent manber of t Government, and never before, o far at we recollect, a single instance of a Prine Minis- ter, abandoning the House of Commonsin the ful might of his power, to secure^ a safe retreat anc ignoble ease in the quiet of the gilded Chamber. Still. if Mr DISRAELI found the leadershp of hil party ill the House of eoeimons-inydviiag in- cessant strain, and burdensome toil, and ox. haustive night labours- -too severe a tac upon his energies ancLhis health, there was no olherwoourif open for him, if he wished to retain a position amongst his political party. P, or it is im. possible to conceive Mr DISRASZI Avlding a subordinate position in the To Ministry, composed, for the mot part, of mediocrities and ineapables. It woild shocl all one's ideas of congruity and political fitnesi even to fancy Mr DisRABLl running in doublt harness with, say, Sir CHARLES ADDERS; or play ing second part to Mr GATHORNB HAJDT or to Aii WARD HUNT. Aut Ccesar aut nullitsvould be th. involuntary cry of Mr DISRAELI whei viewing th( exploits of tuese and other of hif inferior col- leagues and as he can no longer, with safety tc health and life, play Csesar m the stormy areas where his fame was won, he has OBcided to plaj the patrician role of Augustus ii quiet repose amongst the Conscript Fathers, fal from the mad- ding strife of House of Commons dlbates and from midnight divisions. While sincerely regretting the cause which lias compelled Mr DISRAELI to abaidon the lead of his party in the House of Commois, we are unable to congratulate him on the wiscbm or the policy of his reaolve to conceal his wll-known patro- Dymic by hiding it beneath a ttle derived from Royalty. Of course, if a coronct and a title, and admission to the House of liord, are the natural end, and the fitting reward of g nius, and scholar* ship, and commanding oratory, aid brilliant debat* ing powers, and the diplomacy of statesmanship, and the dominancy of a strong wil, and subtile gifts of tact and political 8trate, tbn Mr DISRABU richly merits and deserves thit reward.
