';ZA Y EIBD.A Y, APRIL i¡,-…
';ZA Y EIBD.A Y, APRIL i¡,- 1880. >4 MR. GLADSTONE CHOSEN AT LAST. WE have every reason to be thankful that while Lord BEAcoNSFiELD found it an easy matter to make mere tools of the noble lords and other members of his Cabinet, there are in England men over whom he has had no influence at all. He has twisted almost every one about him into his own shape. He has educated and enslaved his party. He has degraded Parlia. ment. He has, as far as possible, isolated the QuEEN from her people. He has it is of no use to pretend not to perceive it—unduly influenced the QUEEN herself. If he only had time to complete his work, the mischief which he would yet accomplish would be inconceiv- ably groat. Happily, the people of England have asserted their rights and made known their will before it is too late. Lord BEA- CONSFIELD has been hurled from omce, but not one hour too scon. The in- cidents of yesterday and the day before cannot be forgotten, cannot be wiped out of English H.story. Those who have read them, have read them with much-sor- row of heart, for they toucli the throne, they concern a Sovereign loved of her people more than any of her predecessors. There is not an Englisman nor a Welshman who loves Queen VICTORIA who does not at this mo- ment indignantly denounce in his heart the man whose influence has been so employed at Court as to induce HER MAJESTY to leave no stone unturned before she would pay the sliorhtest heed to the nraver J.- --J of her people by summoning to office the'man whom they had unmistakably chosen. From information which we have received, it is quite evident that every effort has been em- ployed to thwart the National will, and ex- clude Mr GLADSTONE from the Premiership. He has been summoned at Jast—thanks to the nrmnesa and manly attitude of the Marquis of HARTiN GTON and Earl GRANViLLE. These two noblemen have, at this critical juncture, rendered their country a great and substan- tial service. They have obstinately resisted all entreaties, all persuasions. They under. stand and appreciate the constitution of England; Lord BsACONSFiELD never did. They love their country. They are genuine patriots. Office brings honour, but thaae two statesmen nrmly refused office and honour when they saw that the acceptance of it might bring the country into trouble. They have acted uuselnshly, and given the people a proof of their thorough trustworthiness. We may all be thankful that the QuEEN's future advisers will not be of the Oriental type. They will not tempt her to make the worst days of the STUARTS and the GEORGES her pattern. They will not whianfr in her ear that "the world is governed only by Kinga and Statesmen." They will not per- suade her that Parliament exists only to vote money. We have come to the end of all this mischief-making. Henceforth the country will be governed on Constitutional principles. It is something to know now that Mr GLADSTONE has at last been summoned to Windsor. Justice has demanded her due, and refused to turn away even from the gates of Windsor Castle until the account had been settled. When a certain deed must be performed, it is always matter of regret when it is performed reluctantly. It loses all its grace when it is torn, so to speak from the clenched fist. Had the choice of the people been frankly accepted, and all purely personal considerations been put to one side, allowing Mr GLADSTONE thus to go on triumphantly to the very pinnacle of thit temple of honour to which the nation had determined to raise him. It is now too late. An opportunity has been lost. The Monarch hM yielded when further resistance was vam. One would have liked to be able to say that tho QUEEN" of England and tl,e Peopb of England were one in he;rt and Purpose in thi, matter. That, unfortunately. ? OMnot bo ?d, A?n? ? b? ? already to smooth matters over, and givi "r tc::i a false appearance. ThefachsaresttN < to fresh ui our memory to be polished otM ? 0: existence. Their angles will not subnet t) be ritbbed off in 0110 shorh day. If, ho\f'- ever, some c-f the gloss and glittet of the nnal step by which Mr CLAP' STONE h:is regained his true plact t a.tnong his countrymen, be looksa for in vain, it is satisfactory to bo able to say that truth and justice have, in spite ot all opposition, won a victory, that crafb ha? signally failed, and that we n?y hope thM the QuEEN will live and reisn long enoug" to see that her subjects are capable of form- ing a sound judgment;, and making a choice of winch they never need to repent.

He b? '!t?tpd these views in ti.e presence of MrJ.? T?ogrrs, h;s partner, Mr Mangel Ree". and M' E !W.'rds, solicitor, at Mr Tr. gouing's onicc, %,bell Mr Tregon'ng tried to obtain a pledge fr" him in favour (if the Conservative foreign policy. "Aithough u' guarded andextr'vagant lancu? may be exonsed from a Parliamentary a-piran? smarting under self-parned defeat; stiil one catf not aliow a complete ¡¡¡jsrenre, entalion of fac such as this paragralh diadoaes, to --pss withou' comtr.eut. When I Wfts aketl by friends in Car* earthen and Llanelly to contest the seat, inste&o of giving an unmediate rep!v, I t(,olcstei)stg ascertain what we had to expect from Mr Jeakiot bey'nj a reprtSexta.'ion nf the interests ofth< thi-p?te trade. I told him <ti.stinct!y that was not prepared to accept his political creed altogether on trust, a?d I submitted three inf portant qnestiona to him, to each of which ht< answer was so satisfactory that I did not hesit' ttt for a moment to stand aside in order that he mi?M have the full benefit of the Cotiservf.tive v 'ta. Torching t' e Foreign r«])cy of the Earl <" Beaconsfield's Government, Mr Jenkins led me M understand that he thonght the? had n?d? a mi<* take in not accepting the Andt-asay Note and tht Bfdin Memcrandmn, but that having got intt trouble, to use his o. n expression, nothing could well have exceeded the adrcitnesa ana ability evinced by them in extricating the coca* try from dimculty." Further, that he hfid reM the retnarkable spfeeh deiivered bv Mr Joseph (Jowen, in the Town-hall at Newcastle, on tha 31i<t January that it fairly reSeeted his owm opitjions; and that he would support the 1, ,0 e Policy of the Government so Ion? as it com- manded the approval of such representatives at MrCowen. I vas perfectly satisHe'! with thi* assurance from Mr Jeukins, and I left bin) uodef the convicbion that, like Mr Uowen, he intendoi to act in<'e) eudeutiy, and to support the policy oi Patriotism and not of Fa'ty. \Veall kuowthat he propose i to sit on the Liber.il benches of th< Rouse of Commons; but we also knew. claiming as he did the almost unanimous support of t!.< Conservative elector, and backed up as he w;<sby the lea(1ing- Conservative lourna.) nf t!.e diatrict. be?ouIdhavetobea.Whie', and nothing mor? unless he cho?e to disre??rd t))e views of those t< whom he would be indebtfd for his seat. Th< resutt "f the poll shows, I think, beyond que?ti'tC t at he had t-he seat abaohtteiy a.t hia me cy and if ):e had not attempted to satisfy aH see* t!ona of the constituency—T?ry, Whig, and Radical—he wou)d probably now be in )osae? siou of the prize which he so much coveta.' Mr Tregcninc then goea on to give some advice M the Liberal leaders, as to the course winch theW ought to pursue at the next election.
