LONDON, SATURDAY EVENING. The week has closed without incident, and to-day there has been nothing done beyond ful- iTHng actual engagements. The shipping trade is as bad as it well can be. Salt is being carried tem this country to New York at 2a per ton, and ■othing farther need be said on this point to indi- cate the true condition of affairs. The business in the Foreign Market has been almost confined to Egyptian bonds, which have given way on the receipt of weaker prices from Paris and Alexandria. There have been consider- able realisations, and the prices given were from 4 to 5 per cent lower. Business in the Home Railway market has been oactremely quiet, and prices have given way toonBcds the close. DEATH IN THE STREETS.
DEATH IN THE STREETS. At Bow-street Police-court, on Saturday, Arthur Whit- field Boden, a driver in the employ of the London General Omnibus Company, was charged before Sir Thomas Henry with causing the death of Thomas Francis Biddell. The omnibus of which the defendant was the driver was stopped near King-street, Holborn, about 9.15 at night, to set down a passenger, and as it was starting the deceased, a little boy nine years of age, was seen to run across the road. When near the omnibus his foot slipped, and he fell with his head under the front wheel. When picked up he was quite dead, the back of his head being completely crushed. The witnesses concurred in thinking that no blame was to be attributed to the driver.—Sir Thomas remarked that an inquest would be held, which he advised the defendant to attend, and he remanded him for. a week on hi sown recognisances.
NOVEL VACCINATION CASE.
NOVEL VACCINATION CASE. At the Clerkenwell Police-ceurt, on Saturday, Alfred George Roberts, of 16, Rotherfield-street, Islington, was summoned, before Mr. Cooke, at the instance of Mr. John Broome, vaccination officer for the parish of St. Mary. Is- lington, for not having sent his child to the public vaccina- tion station in order that its arm might be inspected by the medical man, and other children vaccinated therefrom. It was proved in evidence that this most important clause in the Vaccination Act had not been complied with at the proper time, and that great inconvenience was likely to arise from such a cause not only to persons taking their children for vaccination, but also to the officers. In the present case. the defendant having coip- plied with the provisions of the Act since the summons was issued, a mitigated fine of Is. only was in- flicted, with the costs of the summons. Mr. Broome ap- plied to the magistrate for extra costs, as this was the third time he had had to attend this court in support of this case, but as it was shewn that this was not wholly the fault of the defendant, Mr. Cooke refused the applica- tion. He further remarked that these cases were very properly brought before him.

MEDICAL quacks were by no ineans rare in the last century. Dr. Hancock, Rector of St. Margaret's, Lothbury, preached up the water cure, which Pliny, the naturalist, described as being in his day the fashionable remedy in Rome. He published a work in 1723 on Common Water the best Cure for Fevers, and probably for the Plague." The good man recommended stowed prunes for obstinate cases of blood-spitting. Ward's pill was sounded by the learned Chief Baron Reynolds. The tar-water mania was spread far and wide by Bishop Berkeley. In vol. xviii. of the Gentleman's Magazine is a list of 202 quack doctors then practising. Sir Hans Sloane sold an eye salve. an fl Dr. Mead had a favourite nogtm--a powder for the bite of a mad dog." Tobias Wliitaker and John Archer were both physioinRi in ordinary to Charles the Second, and deep-drinking, jolly fellows. Whitaker wrete a treatise on the properties ef wine, of which he was a w« rshipper, as is shewn by His Tree of Humane Life, or the Blond of the Grape, proving the pessibilitie of maintaining Humane Life from Infancy to Extreahie Old Age without any Sioknesse by the Use of "Wine." In bis hook, sold at the author's shop, Pipe's Head-alley, he tells as, Thia is the phisick that doth not dull, but seta a true edge upon nature after opera- tion learath no veuomous oontaefc. Sure I am this was an amoieat phisiok; else what meant Avieemaa, Rhasis, and Averroea, to move the body twice every month with the aame aa it is familiar to nature, ao they use it fami- liarly." John Archer, who wrote Every Man hia Own Secter, and Secreta Disolosed, had a place of 16uniusal, a chamber in a saddler's house ever against the Black Horse, nigh Charing-cress, where he attended from eleven to five each day. He bp. a number of apothecaries' shops, and, like Whitaker, lived by the sale of drugs, as well aa feea. His oordial diet drink was advertised at 2s. M. per quart; for a box containing thirty morbua pills the eharge was 3s., and forty corroborating pills the sftttte. He prided himself em three inventions—a hot steam bath, an oven which doth with a small fajgot bake a goed quantity of anything, and a complete chariot that shall, with any ordinary horse, run swift with four or five people in it, and there is place for moro without, :H which one horse can as easily draw as two horae.. CORD STRATFORD'S LETTER AND…
CORD STRATFORD'S LETTER AND THE NORD." In reference to Lord Stratford de Redcliffe's last letter. the Xord says :—For the moment w- shall confine ourselves to observing that it attests in the most explicit manner the non-fulfilment of the reforms BO often decreed by the Ottoman Government, but that it is difficult to per ceive in the plan of the English diplomatist the guarantee of a more sincere execution in future of the engagements taken. This plan resembles at first sight all those of which during the last twenty years events have shewn the complete sterility too much to make it possible to expect serious results from it. Nevertheless, there remains in Lord Stratford de Redcliffe's letter the previous avowal that nothing has been done since the Crimean war to ameliorate the lot of the Christian populations in Turkey

CARDIFF PROVISION MARKET, Saturday. — (From Johnston,Miles, and Co.'s Circular.)—Beef—extra India mess in bet .sr demand stockb are very much reduced in New York prime ana Ine;a little inquired for. Pork -little offering, and demand brisk—we look for easier Erices when the ice-cured comes forward. Bacon—holders ave met buyers, asd prices have had a slight decline; the general impression is that prices will again advance, as the stocks are by no means heavy, and packers in America have no inducement to go on cutting, owing to the high price of hogs. Cheese-sellers have met buyers freely in price; there is a strong demand for all grades; some few new are arriving, but the quality is not by any means fine stocks and shipments are light. Butter- with the favourable turn in the weather the make is slightly increasing, consequently prices have fallen con- siderably up to the present time we are far short of last year's make.
