A ■ -ting of the Ellis Memorial Commit- ter ■ held at Shrewsbury an Friday, Wht jere were present Dr Roger Hughes (cha, r'Ul), Mr Thomas Ellis (CynW), Mr Wil ar Evans (Birmingham), Mr Thomas .Ton irynmclyT,), Mr Owen M. Edwards, •ir v • cent Evans, and the R jt^Txwynoro Da'v." It was decided that the statue be < 'M in the main street- at Bala on the site town as Plaq-rn-dre. It was ixnani- mot:" rosolv-ed that thA work should not be i n out for competition, and that a dpp 'ton, consisting of Mr William Evt, Air Owen M. Edwards, and Mr Vin- fX&t I rans, shoold see Mr Goscombe John to v\ :• ain the position of the committee, and to 83k him to snbmit designs of a statue. Mr John, being a. personal friend of the late Mr Ellis, would naturally have a great advantage over an art'st who Iwd never seen him. It was reported that sub scriptions continued to come in from differ- ent parts of the country. It is estimated that at least ajiother E250 will be required if a si atue worthy of Mr Ellis is to ho erected. It is the intention of Mr William Evans (Birmingham) to present every sub scnb?r or collector of one guinea and up- wards towards the movement with a brorze m<?da.) in ease. On one side of the medai will be an effigy of Mr Ellis, and on lhl other side one of Cynhus, his birthplace and home. Some 800 or 1000 of medals will be struck off. It is anticipated that the stable will be up by the end of August.

---_._-Carnarvon County Governing…
Carnarvon County Governing Body. At a quarterly meeting of the Carnar- von County Governing Body, held on Thursday at Carnarvon, under the presi dency of the ohairmau (Mr D. P. Williams), Dr Lloyd Williams was re-elected a gov- ernor of the North Wales University Col- lege. The vice-chairman (Mr J. Is-ard Davies) moved that the County Governing Body should consider tbe advisability of appointing for the intermedate schools a travelling teacher of dalisthenics. He pointed out that the present system of drill was but perfunctorily carried out, and it did not apply to girls to the extent it ought to. Air J. E. Greaves (Lord Lieutenant) seconded the motion. Prin- cipal Reichel approved of the principle of the motion, but questiorrxl whether the drills could be efficiently taught by a traveling teacher, who could only visit each school once a week. Ultimately, on the motion of Mr Greaves, the meeting ap- proved of the principle, and referred the question to the technical committee for a report. A recommendation by the Suiv-Technical Committee to distribute the sum of £ 1083 among the local governing bod:es in reo- spect of technical instruction was adopted. The Portmadoc Local Governing Body ap- plied for an extra grant of £ 100 towards meeting a deficiency brought about by the special" attention paid to manual instruc- tion at that. school.—-Mr Ricliard Davies moved that tho money be paid, and Mr Greaves seconded.—Mr Issard Davies maintained that every school was eqially entitled to an increased grant towards technical instruction.—The Rev William Morgan urged that the special case of Portmadoc. should be considered, especially if the governors apprehended that they could not get along. He noticed that Port- madoc paid its teachers much better than some of the other schools, there being, one instance of a B.Sc. being employed for £ 35 a year, recently raised to P, (Z ("Shame"). Mr Richard Daviess motion was lost.—A discussion followed on the dfv- sirability of allocating the grants in future according to merit, the Rev W. Morgan complaining of the monotony which charac- terised the work of all the schools, tut no resolution was passed on the question. The Rev W. Morgan opened a discussion on the attitude of the Central Board to the subject of manual instruction. The references to this subject in the Cen .ral Board report" were most perfunctory and inadequate. In the report for 1901 Car- narvon school was simply mentioned, Port- madoc school was highly commended, Bov- twnog and Pwllheli were excused, Pen- ygroes was condemned, and the others were not mentioned at all.-Princ.ipal Reichel thought the reports might deal more de- finitely with the subject from ye."i- ro year. -Mr Issard Davies corrected Mr Morgan with respect to Carnarvon School, in re- 1 ference to which the report gave details of what was shown in the workroom—Tht Rev W. Morgan maintained that what he had said was right, generally speaking. The reports were most inadequate. There was a tiresome monotony in thenf. There were no details given of the work actually done. The County Govening Body was responsible for the scheme and for its effiei ént working, and they should have means of satisfying themselves that those schemes, dO far as manual instruction was concerned, wfere being carried' out. The Central Board reports did not supply the informa- tion. It would appear that it was only from Portmadoc schools that pupils wer", presented at all in manual subjects. U)
GARDENING NOTES.
GARDENING NOTES. By JAMES CARTER & Co. PRUNING SMALL FRUITS. Where gooseberries are grown on a rick -oil they will make a considerable growth each year. The shoots grow so close to- gether that in very many cases it is a mat- ter of some little difficulty to gather the fruit, and then free pruning becomes not only a convenience but a necessity, ami it will also cause the fruit to be not. only better flavoured but much larger than when grown on an over-crowded bush. Neglect pruning year after year and the fruit will deteriorate, untill it becomes only half the size well grown fruit ought to be. Cut out all decayed branches, and also am that are not in good condition. All young shoots — usually termed usuekers"-that have grown up from the roots should be cut off close down to the ground. Cut back all young shoots that. have crown on the old branches to about one inch in length, leaving two or three buds, and these buds will be found to bloom and bear fruit. Should the bushes be snrvll and young the upright shoots on the top of each branch may be left about 12 or 14 inches in length, but in the case of full grown bushes half this length will be ample. Red and white currants will require prun- ing in the same manner as gooseberries. Black currants will require to have all shoots and branches thinned, but not cut in. All old branches should be cut out so as to make room for the new growth. Raspberry canes only live for two years, last season'9 growth bearing fruit this and then dying. In pruning this fruit all old canes that have home fruit should be cut out, in order that the young wood may take their place. Should the canes be rather numerous it is a very good plan to cut out the weakest of them, only allowing 3 to 5 of the strongest and most rigorous to remain. If it is found necessary to cut off the tops only do so at a height of fro,, 4 to 5 feet: should the canes be cut lower down than the height mentioned a deaf of wood is destroyed which would be of use for fruiting. FOLIAGE PLANTS. Of late years it has been more fulh recognised than it once was that plants with nothing but ornamental leaves to re- commend their aro beoopiing as popular as those which bear flowers. We refer to this here because when any lists are given of plants for çrrpenhouse culture, leaf plarrts. bevond Pilins and Ferns, merely ?v& seldom" -;npni therein. Palms And Ferns | deserve recognition as pa|*tica\arly use- ful for room work. as they will thrive in less sunlisrht than other plants and for nicking tasteful masses they are ahno-t indispensable. The usually graceful form:. set off other heavier things to great ad- vantage. Let anv on" take, for instance, thr- heavier l^av^d Begonias of thp old "Røx" typo, and no matter how thev be massed or* arnnyd. thev always look stiff and stodky. But if a W P«lms or Fern-s be introduced into the company the result is very different, as tlie beauty of the Begonias is heightened, and the foliage plants are still more bright 'ned.
