Royal Divorce.
Royal Divorce. SUIT BY A GRANDDAUGHTER OF THE QUEEN. Berlin, Thursday.—The papers here are busy with the domestic relations of Prince and Princess Aribert of Anhalt, between whom an action for divorce is now pending on the suit of the Princess. The latter is the daughter of Prince and PrincessChristian and grand-daughter of the Queen of Eng- land. She was married to Prince Aribert in 1891. It seems to be a case of ill-assorted temperaments. The Princess is an artist of real attainments. Her husband cares for nothing but field sports. The pair have been separated for some time. It is stated that the Princess is now in America. Prince Arihert was until recently a captain in the 1st Regiment of the Dragoon Guards. He is now retired with an honorary rank.— Daily Express."
Cycling.-. ..
Cycling. Convictions for cycling offences in London have dropped from 79 to 53 per annum. The shareholders of the Glasgow Cycle Traders' Association, Ltd., have decided not to hold a cyfele show next year. The Highways Committee of the Croydon Dis- trict Council have received a claim of JE3 from a cyclist for damage to his machine caused by a hole in the roadway. For racing, as well as ordinary riding, a wheel fitted with Dunlop-Welcli rims can be highly re- commended. There exists little or no danger of a wheel built up on this rim collapsing; a danger much to be feared by all riders of weak wheels. The desire of so many professionals has been accomplished by Stinson, of America, at the Brockton (Mass.) track, by riding on a safety bicycle over 40 miles in an hour. Stinson was weil paced by motor tandems, and in the sixty minutes covered 40 miles 327 yards. The track is four laps to a mile and has a wooden surface. The fourth anniversary of the Locomotives and Highways Acts of 1896 is close at hand, and will be celebrated on November 10th by the Automobile Club, in the form of a tour from London to Southsea and back. The start will take place from the Horse Guards Avenue at 9.30 a.m., and the restriction that no passing will be allowed until Esher is left behind is a good one, and one which will be enforced. At Godalming, luncheon will be taken. The Club is offering certificates for non-stop rides; that is for riders who make non-stop runs from London to Godalming and from Godal- ming to Portsdown. Hitherto the celebration of the Act has been carried out by the British Motor Club, but since this institution is now defunct the Automobile Club has filled the breach, and will perpetuate the celebration of Emancipation day in conjunction with the recently formed English Motor Club. The report which has been issued by the Anerley Bicycle Club giving particulars of the success which has attended their amateur handicaps, affords interesting reading. Tweive races have been held, and have attracted no less than two hundred and ninety entries, or an average of over twenty-four per race. The nett receipts amounted to R94. 18s. 7d., which allowed an average of JE1. 6s. Od. for first prizes; 10s. 5d. for second prizes; and 5a. 2 d. for third prizes. It will thus be seen that the handicaps were entirely self supporting, and as the venture has met with such success, it is to be hoped that next season the races will be continued; and furthermore that they will grow in popu- larity. The fact that the average entry for each race was over twenty-four is very good evidence that men are just as keen to go for J61. 6s. Od. first prizes, 10s. 5d. second prizes, and 5s. 21f d. third prizes, as for the regulation five, three, and two guinea prizes. The most important motor-cycle record of the sea- son undoubtedly stands to the credit of Dernester, the well known Parisian chauffeur who on a motor tricycle fitted with Dunlop tyres recently covered the remarkable distance of forty-four miles, four hundred and ninety-nine yards in the hour on the Pare des Prince's track, Paris. Demester, who is regarded as one of the most daring of drivers, also succeeded in reducing the 100 Kilometres record to 1 hour, 27 minutes, 44 and 2-5 seconds, and this he accomplished after having to stop to change one of his wheels. Tom Linton, the Welsh crack, is still pegging away in his attempt to obtain the much coveted one hour record. Recently be made an attempt which looked like being successful, but owing to a slight hitch with his pacing, Linton failed by one hundred and forty yards only. The small hitch referred to put Linton out of his stride, e6 to speak, and as anyone knows, when once a man is even for a moment baulked when going at top speed, it means an appreciable loss, and although, had the hitch not occurred, Linton might yet have been a few yards short of the coveted distance, yet on the other hand he might have been a few yards over. There is no lack of bad luck about the incident. A statement has been made by the Racing Board of the Scottish Cyclists' Union that no permits will in future be issued for race meetings crniew the tracks upon which the meetings are proposed to be held, are considered safe by a Union official. The National Cyclists' Union has a somewhat similar rule which is more or less of a dead letter. To judge from some of the tracks upon -which meetings are held, one would suppose that no such rule exists, or that if it does, the official told off to judge as to the safety or otherwise of the track is wholly incompetent for his work. Some of the country tracks upon which men are asked to RiCe arc veritable death-traps, and it is certain that there is a. great opening for improvement in thil direction. 9 C In a recent plebiscite organized by one of th* cycling papers, in which readers were invited to- give a dozen items of improvement which would go to make up a perfect bicycle, it is interesting to note that the largest number of votes was received for a non-puncturable tyre. This is not at. all unnatural, as the puncture demon appeals un- favourably to everyone. Some of the items proposed occupy positions in the list which seem out of accord with their importance. For instance, the suggestion of a perfect saddle is so high np aa third place, while what might have been thought more important items, i.e., non-alipping tyres and standard size for nuts, occupy number six and twenty-six respectively on the list, which consists of no 13,'s than thirty-five items. One would have been inclined to place these two latter items at any rate before the third one referred to.
