A Third Edition of the Journal" will, be issued this (Friday) evening, containing an account of the day's Eisteddfod proceedings.
is WISE AND OTHERWISE.
is WISE AND OTHERWISE. '<t; ii for married people.'—"Never (lis-pair r The rhinoceros is a modest animal. It is impos- lible for him to blow his own horn. "He is awfully unlucky." "In what way?" ''Just as he became an anarchist his hair all fell Out." 1 She: "I detest a man who is always talking shop." He: "And I dislike a woman who always talks shopping." How does Mrs. Gargoyle come to know so much of the Gummey family affairs ? Gargoyle bought Gummey's parrot." Postmaster: "The letter is too heavy; it requires another stamp." Countryman: "Why, that will make it heavier still," Flo: "Do you love me, sweet?" Will: "Dearly." "Would you die for me? "No, my precious girl; m ne is an undying love." Some husbands and wives are divorced on account of a misunderstanding, and others because they understand each other too well. Lamb: "I suppose you enjoy a gams of poker with an expert player?" Wolf: "I enjoy playing with a man who considers himself an expert." "There is a nice thing about having two babies in the house," said Sleepless. "What is that?" "They each cry so loud you can't hear the other." "Who wrote the Psalms?" asked the superin- tendent, severely. And then the little girl in the infant class began to cry. "It wasn't me, sir," she laid. "Why do you sigh?" asked Mr. Wilkinson. "Because I can't see the back of my dress," replied the poor lady. "And oh, I know it fits so beauti- fully! "I wonder," said the garrulous boarder, "why they speak of truth being at the bottom of a well ? "Because," said the other man, "it often can be got at only by pumping." He: "Give me a kiss?" She (decidedly): "1 won't." He "You shouldn't say I won't' to mo you should have said: I prefer not. silo; ptit that wouldn't be true." Mr. Fowler: "Tommy, my son, do you know that it gives me as much pain as it does you when I punish you ? Tommy: "Well, there's some satis- faction in that, anyhow." Dadson: "That boy of mine is a regular phenomenon." l'atcheller (wearily): "In what way?" Dadson: "He's six years old and never said a clever thing in his life." "Can it be only six o'clock ?" said John, opening his watch. "There goes the factory whistle." "That's not the whi.-tle, dear," put in Mrs. John. "It's the new cook singing in the kitchen." Mother: "What on earth are you doing to the child, Jane, to make her cry so?" Jane (who has just slapped her) "I s'pose it's the medicine, mum. The label says as how children cries for it." "Well, Fred, you are an uncle now; you ought to be proud of it." Little Frod "No, I oughtn't to. I ain't no uncle." Grandpa: "Wh_v not ? Little Fred: 'Cause I'm an aunt. The new baby's a girl." Hostess: "Dear me, the conversation is flagging. What can we do to amuse our guests ?" Host: "I don't know, ualess we leave the drawing-room for a few minutes and give them a chance to tain about us." When poor Mr. Trelawny failed in business, his* wife told her friends that her hue hand was" loo con- scientious" to succeed. What she said to him in private, however, was quite another matter altogether. A North-country coroner is said to be awaiting the suicide of a local poet who wrote about clasp- ing "the two tremulous hands "of his lady-love, but which the printer made to read "the two tremendous hands." Judge (bald-headed): "If half what the witnesses testify against you is true, your conscience must DO as black as your hair." Prisoner: "If a man's con- science is regulated by his hair, then your worship hasn't any conscience at all." "Say, Doubleup," said Engleman, looking up from his paper, "here's a meteorologist who says the severest storms always begin about midnight." "He's right. That is about the time I frequently reach home, and find my wife awake." First swell (pretending to mistake for a waiter a rival whom lie sees standing in dress clothes at the cloak-room of the theatre): "Ah have you a pro- gramme?" Second swell (up to snuff): "Thank3, my man; I got one from the other fellow." A cooking secret.—Mr. E. Conomie: "Did you write to [that man who advertises to shew people how to make puddings without milk, and have them richer?" Mrs. E. Conomie: "Yes, and sent him a shilling." "What did he reply ? "Use cream." Napoleon the Great used to leave his letters un- answered for three weeks, and then found that it had become unnecessary to reply to them. Treat your grievances in the same way, and nine times out of ten you will find that they will give you no further trouble. Nephew: "Hold up, uncle! people'll think you're screwed Uncle (the wedding breakfast had been hilarious): "Screw'd! No, no, Sheorgsh! No' sh' bad 'sh that! 'Shame time—don' le'sh be—(lurch- ing heavily)—osht'ntas'hly shober! Can't bear osht'ntash'n!" Mrs. Timeservcr: "I don't approve of Mr. Money- bag's suit, my dear. I don't think he is the man for you, for he doesn't seem to have a spark of principle. Miss Timeserver: "Ho has a principal. ma, of £ 40,000, that yields him 10 per cent, annually. What more do you want ? First undergraduate: "I say, George, what a wonderful race those old Greeks were! Think of their triumphs in art, architecture, philosophy, literature!" Second undergraduate "Nothing re- markable about that. They didn't have to spend the best years of their lives learning Greek." An encore.—At a recent village entertainment » number of children took part in a glee. On arriv- ing home, one of the girls was asked how tho audience liked their performance, upon which the youthful singer replied: "Oh, they did not like it one little bit; they made us come back and sing it over again." "I've had a delightful time on my holidays. No regular hours for meals. A large airy room. No charge for hot and cold baths. All fruit and vegetables. A well-stocked wine cellar and no charge for corkage, and, above all, no fees for tho servants." "Delicious! Where is this ideal spot?" "I stayed at home." "Young man," said a stern old professor to a student who had been charged with kissing one of his daughters—"young man, don't you get into that habit. You'll find that kissing is like eating soup with a fork." "How so, sir?" asked the student. "Because," answered the stern old professor, "you can't get enough of it." "I'd like to know what ails these spectacles!" crumbled Mr. Skinnphlint. "I've always taken the very best care of them, but they've begun to fail me. I can't see through them well any more." "Why don't you take them back to the man you bought them from ? asked Mrs. Skinnphlint. "1 would if I could," he rejoined savagely, "but he died fourteen years ago." Johnson: Were you at the concert, Jones ?" Jones: "Yes, part of the time." Johnson; "Did you hear me sing The IN,olf I ? Jones "I The Wolf ? How does it go?" Johnson (singing): "'Whilst the wolf, in nightly prowl, bays the moon with hideous how-w-1. Jones (expressively): "Oh, yes; I remember the hideous howl." A private soldier in a northern Scottish depot had received a letter from his sweetheart, and. being indifferently educated, lie was unable to make out many parts of it. He accordingly took it to his sergeant, and begged him to read it aloud to him, "But, sergeant," lie added, innocently, "put yer flngers in yer lugs, so's 3-elll no' hear what she says Quite unsympathetic.—Birdie M'Hennepin and her brother were at the seaside. "Oh, see that! exclaimed Birdie. See what P inquired the stoical John. "Why, see that little cloudlet, just above the waveiet, like a tiny leaflet dancing o'er tho scene." "Oh, come, you had better go out to tho pumplet in the back yaydlet and soak your little headlet." "Did you find out what that woman wus hollerin' about? said Farmer Noakes's wife. when that old gentleman returned t) their room in the hotel. "I asked the boy with the programmes," lie replied, "What did he say ? "He said it was III Trovatory.' I didn't like to shew my igncrance by askin' more questions. But I suppose it's the fashionable uam« fur toothache."
