Spanish (."LAIMP-—X progress made in the settlement of the Danish claims is a striking instance of what may be done by agitation with weals Govern- ment. But there are other claims equally worthy of attention. In 1S04 the Government of that day, having reason to believe that the fruits of Spanish commerce went to support the French war against England, ordered the seizure of four Spanish frigates from South America, with rich cargoes and bullion, without previous intimation, or declaration of war. This led to reprisals, and t'.te seizure, of a large amount of British property in Spain, the owners of which were the victims of the policy of their own Government; they expected 110 quarrel—they were not prepared for any and, as England seized ^800,0t?0 worth of Spanish property, surely the sufferers have a right to look to Government for compensation. Application was made while Lord Mthorp was Cban- cellor of the Exchequer; and the Noble Lord at- tempted to give it the go-by by pleading a distinc- tion between this case and that of the Danish c.aims, and when beaten out of that the Noble Lord ae uai 3 set up that rcfugim pccculorum, the Statute o L;11I- tatio:i. We say to the sunäcrs-Iook at what tias been done iu the Danish matter, and permit not a se.sioil to pass without an applicatioll-Lecds lnUl- Ugcnccr.

;EXTRAORDINARY INVES TIG A TI OX. c Charge of Robbery to the Amount of £ 15,000 and vpwards. At Bow Street, on Thursday afternoon, Mary Anne Middleton, a young woman, attired in the first style of fashion, was brought into the office, and placed in the dock before Sir Frederick Roe, on the charge of having- stolen plate, jewellery watches, &c. to the amount of upwards of 412,000; and three Bank of England notes for £ 1,000 each, three notes for iff 100 each, and other property, the rightful goods and monies of Mrs Eleanor Cochrane, widow, The case appeared to excite great interest, and is likeiy to give rise to several very lengthened inves- tigations. Before the inquiry was gone into the officers brought in several trunks, cases, &e. filled with wa'ches, jewellery, and other articles, of the most costly and fanciful description. Mr Bodkin said he appeared 011 behalf of Mrs Eleanor Cochrane, the widow of the late Peter Cochrane, Esq. who diedjast year, leaving very con- siderable property, a great portion of whiell the prisoner had, by fraud and trick, contrived to possess herself of. In November, 1830, Mr Cochrane mar- ried the lady who was now th ■ prosecutrix, and he believed it was a marriage of atfection, and that they lived happily tegether, until, unfortunately, being- at Goodwood Races, he became acquainted with, and took the prisoner into keeping, and, leaving his wife, lived with the former until his death, which took place at Kii.gstou the 24th of July, last year. Mr Cochrane was one of two sons of a gentlemaa who made a large fortune in India, and who in his will bequeathed immense property to his widow and to his sons ill trust with her until they were 2f) years of age. The very large collection of jewellery, paintings, plate, &c. was left to the mother, and was to go to the sous at her death. The mother died in Hat ley Street, Caveudish Square, and Mr Peter Cochrane, who was of very eccentric character chose to take a residence in Perceval Street Goswell Street, rather an obscure part ofthe town, certainly, for a young gentleman of fortune. While in Perceval Street he obtained several large bank itotes from the Sun Fire Olfiee upon a policy of insurance which lie effected, and these it would be proved were part of the effects of which the prisoner had possessed herself. Mrs Cochrane, on being apprised of the death of her husband, came, to London, and endea- voured to administer to his effects, but she was met by a story that the prisoner had had a child by hiin and that he had bequeathed by wii] his property to that child. She made an affidavit to that effect which was contradicted, and she then made another affidavit, in which she admitted that she had been aiid that the child was neither his ncr her's. The fraud was detected, and the widow was declared entitled to the properly. A bi!! was then filed in Chancery calling on the prisoner to render an account of all property in her possession at the time of Mr Coehrane s death, to which she put in an answer that all she possessed was her owto. While at Paris Mr Cochrane had bought for the prisoner many expeu- ,c cuiio.-dties, among which was an automaton singing bird inclosed in a splendid case, and on the lid of a deal box in which this was contained was an inscription in writing, to the eifect tint the bird was a present from Mr Cochrane to the prisoner. After the death of Mr Cochrane the prisoner found it necessary to "remove suddenly from Perceval Street to Stamford Street, Blackfriars, and she then filled the bird box with loose jewe's, in order that they might, in accordance with tiie inscription, be con- sidered her property. Mrs Eleanor Cochrane w as then called and stated that she lived at Portsca, Hants, aud was'the widow °{ °\e !a,e Pett'r Cochrane, Esq. She had been' p undered of jewellery, watches, and other property Jo the amount of £ 12,000 aud upwards, besides bree bank-notes of £ 1,000 each, ;uid three of £ 1 00, eft by her ate husband, and she suspected and be- l-cxed that the prisoner had stolen t ha t propert v. Mrs Mary Baxter deposed that she was present aiter the funeral of Mr Cochrane1* mother, w hen Mr Cochrane and the prisoner removed, in a carra^e a large quantity of watches, jewellery, &c. from Harley-Street to Perceval Street- She saw the cases opened the same day, and saw the contents repeat- edly afterwards, and could identify them. Here a great quantity of property was produced a great portion ot which Mrs Baxter identified The Magistrates' tab'.?, and another, with a trav brought in for the purpose, were completely covercd wiih costly jewellery. Witness saw the prisoner the dav after Mr Cochrane's death. On the Monday fo^ lowing they went to Stamford Street, where the pri. soner showed her two large trunks in the drawing" room. Oil a subsequent visit to the same place she opened the trunks, which site said were her pro-'ortv and were brought from Perceval Street :,Id s\; then displayed the contents, consisting o'-the i^wel ;still, of tl,,e j-2,Cl cases and jewels already described. There were tel-caddies also filled with jewels, The prisoner said on that occasion, »I have taken them and brought them here to secure them, considering them my own property. On another day a Mr°\Vood came to the house in Stamford Street with a quan- tity of plate which had been left to his care. The prisoner, after Tvlr Wood was gone, said to witness ■u—u the things, 1 wish I had never had anything to do with them. I wish they had made a hole in the water, for they'll transport me if they are found. On the 7th of August the prisoner removed suddenly from S:amford Street to No. 18, Waterloo Road, al- icgingasareason, that she believed she was watched by the widow and her party. During Mr Cochrane'* lif, time the prisoner sometimes obtained leave to look at the contents of thc jewel cases 011 a Sunday afternoon, after dinner, in witness's presence. 0.1 one of these occasions the prisoner took, out a doze.i articles of great value, and put them in the pockets of her She repeated this several times and observed to Nviiiiess, Ilr Cochrane can't miss thenl, cat) he r" Mi LodrUti said lie had a great many more yvit- nesses, but it being then a late hour ir. the evening, he requested that the inqniry be postponed. No objection was offered by Mr Clarksou, and the prisoner, who was allowed to sit duriug the examina- tion, was remanded till a future day. Oil Saturday the prisoner was ag-aill placed at the bar, and after a witness, Mary Baxter, had identi- fied a variety of al'iic'es which she had seen at the residence of the deceased, Mr Bodkiu, addressing Sir F.Roe, stated that since the former examination some circumstances had been communicated to him which he had great reason to believe would give a different compexion to the transaction to what he had before expected.
