SATURDAY, OCTOBER 16, 1897.
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 16, 1897. WANTED—A TORY CHAMPION. The political atmosphere of Ponty- pridd and the Rhonddas is developing a bracing and vigorous condition to all who wish for restoration to political Liberal health. Mr. JOSEPH HOWES' visit to all the districts of Pontypridd has had the very best results upon the hopefulness of local Radicals. The visit was wanted. We have been bluffed enough with Tory twaddle and mis- representation for some time. We have too long allowed the tares of Toryism to exist and obstruct the growth of the wheat of Radicalism. Education is the best friend of Radicalism. The more the people come to know and understand of political science and history, the more efficient they will be to sift the claims of the two political party principles which appeal to their intelligence. Mr. HOWES' campaign in the district has rid- dled the fallacies which have been so in- dustriously scattered amongst us by Tory I money for the last few years. We feel quite certain that this one visit of the Lancashire expert has knocked the bottom out of all the garrulity which has been retailed to us by Tory missionaries in their three years' converting cam- paign. We are not without pity for our political enemies' lavish sacrifice of mis- directed effort. One touch of JOSEPH HOWES has brought about a tumbling wreck and ruin. There is nothing like the truth simply and intelligently told. Heresy and unreliable statements, how- ever sophistically expounded, cannot hold tne field long. They may flourish in the night of our indifference, but directly the dawn of searching activity breaks the gloom then the recession of o the perverted and misleading is as in- evitably certain as that the natural day follows the natural night. Tory truths are half truths, a travesty of historical facts. There has been locally a glut of these specious sayings in the political market, and it was time that "the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth of our political state, conditions, and duties should come our way from so healthy and plentiful a source as that supplied by Mr. JOSEPH HOWES. We are sorry that Mr. JEFFKRY was away during this refreshing cam- paign. We have been informed that the Tory champion was an invalid at Llandrindcd. We regret his indis- position, and especially its inopportune intervention. We had been led to expect courageous things; the I shall be, prepared to meet him "—that is, Mr. HOWES —had been blatantly proclaimed from Tory platforms, and lively and interesting were our anticipations of a political duel by the heavy-weights of the two Parties. Pontypridd was sorely disappointed by the misfortune of thi Llandrindod sojourn. The FREE PRESS, however, will guarantee Mr. HowES' ex- penses to return to the field of battle if our Conservative friends will meet the expenses of the ring, and bring up their champion to meet him. We are keea on this duel of political experts. The air is surcharged to such an extent with the electricity of political depression that nothing but a good thunder of political exposition will restore us to our normal social life. Shall we have it, or not ? We will stand to our part. +
WELCOME! MR. TOM LIS.
WELCOME! MR. TOM LIS. Mr. TOM ELLIS, Liberal Whip, and the most prominent of Welsh Liberal Leaders, will be amongst us next week. Mr. ELLIS will address the Rhondda Liberals on Wednesday night at Bethle- hem, Trealaw, and will also appear in a similar capacity at Pontypridd on Thursday night. On Thursday after- noon also he will meet with the pro- minent Liberals in order to confer with them on organization matters. The visit will, therefore, result in construc- tion and education. At Pontypridd we are pleased to find that the occasion will be utilised to assemble the East Glamorgan Association, and we sin- oerely hope that the conference will result in good consolidating results. It is to be hoped, also, that the Secretary of the Rhondda Association will convene representatives from every part of the Valley to meet Mr. ELLIS. The public meeting will serve the campaign objects of assembling the rank and file to hear a great leader of political thought, but we are equally anxious to realise benefits for future organization also. We may assiduously prosecute a policy of seed sowing, but to carry out the full measure of our hopes and expecta- tions we must not neglect the machinery. Mr. ELLIS, by his inspir- ing address, will supply the enthusiasm, but unless it is regulated and directed by properly equipped machinery it will not realise the fullest aims and inten- tions. The battle of the future is to be a fierce one. Monopoly and privilege stand desperately together. The people have been long enough cajoled by false hopes doled out in sugar-coated dis- guises. Organization is the best and surest friend to waken into permanent and effective activity our forces, and it should therefore be the Alpha and Omega of our political prayer. We hope that the people will assemble in their thousands to welcome one of Wales' brightest sons. Mr. TOM ELLIS is the genuine outcome of the people, and he has brought honour and renown to the stock in the pursuit of his political faith. We say no more this week, but let us remember that nothing short of a weloome in the good traditional Welsh way is the due of this champion of Welsh aims and aspiration. I'R GAD, I'R GAD.
" A MODEL SCHOOL." --
A MODEL SCHOOL." In our columns this week we have the extreme gratification of inserting the Government Report on the Ystrad Higher Grade School. The denomina- tion of a Model Higher Grade School is praise unique and exceptional, and reflects the ability of the Head Teacher, Mr Llewellyn Jones, inside che School, and the School Board outside, in its ad- ministrative spirit. Those who predicted the absorption of the Higher Grade type of school in the institution of our Intermediate Schools have been greatly out of their reckoning. The two systems have their spheres in the needs of a. progressive community. The fact that these advanced schools of the Rhonddas —the Intermediate and Higher Grades —are full and call for greater accom- modation, shows that the thirst for higher teaching for the children of the people is being daily elevated to a higher plane. The Higher Grade svstem, with its provision for the train- ing of children for more advanced artizan and commercial capacities, and of children who are furthermore not designed for a prolonged retention in the school, assists such possibilities without in any way operating in a. manner antagonistic to the aims and purposes of an Intermediate School. Both deserve a concurrent existence, and both supply a demand. Again we say that such a report is gratifying, and we heartily commend the action of Mr. HENRY ABRAHAM in moving that the Board should convey to Mr. JONES its congratulations. Teachers, like all human beings, can and will do better work under a regime of recognition and appreciation, and more of it will cheer the weary hearts of those who have daily to toil in one persistent struggle in replacing black ignorance with the dawning light and power of sound, life- inspiring education.
