Amusements. Hippodrome, Tonypandy. An original musical comedy phantasf, Jltitled The Queen of Sheba," is pre- texted here this week. For fun of the aoreamer type, The Queen of Sheba is the recipe, and for us to describe it here would only be the means of marring a certain amount of pleasure which is 'derived from the fact of not knowing what is coming. David Fuller is the possessor of a magnificent baritone voice. His principal songs are two old The Wolf and The Village Black- smith," but at the same time Mr. Fuller renders them in a manner which is entirely removed from the usual hackneyed style we are accustomed to. Fremel and Fremel, original eccentric comedians, appear in a quaint mixture of patter and eccentric tumbling. Their business is fresh and very amusing. The Hinson Bros. also present an amusing turn as comedians and dancers. The pictures are of great interest, including "The Slave," a very fine dramatic series. Theatre Royal, Tonypandy. A most interesting and decidedly well- played drama is For Her Husband's Sake," which Mr. Millar Anderson's com- pany is producing at the Royal this week. Miss Josephine Richards plays Marie Dene in a bewitching manner through- out, and finds able support in all the members of the company, which includes Mr. J. O. Lloyd Percy (" Lieutenant Seymour"), Mr. Millar Anderson (" Her- bert Gray "), Mr. Harry Douglas (" A. K, Silas, the Oil King). Miss Henrietta Schrier (" Estelle Beaudet "),. Miss Doris -Laine {" Eileen Silas "), the comic element feeing brought into prominence by Mr. Harry Douglas (" Terry, O'Neil "). Miss Bertha Hanbury takes the part of "Vi," Marie's little daughter, in a very natural and taking manner, while Miss Rene Wreford wins considerable applause with her solo dance in the Cafe Chantant scene, Palace, Porth. An excellent combination appears at the Palace this week, the principal turn being Barton and Ashley, in a farcical sketch, entitled" Adam the Second." From the rise of the curtain to its fall this turn keeps the house in one roar. The isolated maiden, the balloon descent, their patter and dance is so peculiarly funny that the aaidience laughs un- restrainedly. and accord them hearty applause, Kitty Wager, comedienne, with dainty songs and charming voice, is superb, and instantly captures all hearts. Responsible for roars of laughter also are the comedians, Drew and Alders, in their original act, The Coastguards," who are much appreciated. Spry and Monti, in miscellaneous comedy, The Song Writer and the Soubrette," need no comment, this being their second visit. Fred Poplar, comedian, is exceedingly good, and well deserves the plaudits showered upon him. Chas. Santon, male soprano and double- voiced vocalist, really possesses an astonishing voice, and is greatly admired. Last but not least is Arthur Albert, of "Daddy's on the Engine" fame, who contributes a fine item to the programme. The Palascope picture is well up to date, the Royal drama being well appreciated. Tivoli, Pentre The audiences this week will probably rank the Four Regals as worthy of first place in this week's entertainment at the Tivoli. Their unique speciality, "The Armourers is produced in first-class style, the scenery and surroundings repre- senting the interior of a smithy. The blacksmith is a mighty man in more than one sense, while his customers are three very powerful knights. The feats of strength performed are marvellous, the bending of a 2-inch solid iron bar being remarkable. Lievin and Pantzer are a very clever pair of acrobats and equili- brists, some of their twists and turns being very skilful and entirely original. The King's College Boys, six in number, contribute a select musical act, The Students' Concert." The items rendered are very good, both individually and col- lectively. Russell Brandow, described as the original brownie," must be given high praise. His stepping and dancing are very eccentric. Creesie Leonard soon established herself in the good opinion of the audience. Her voice is not very powerful, but what it lacks in that re- spect is more than balanced by its sweet- ness. Other good turns are provided by Henriette and Selina, entertainers on various musical instruments; also J. J. Mannin, a coffee coloured coon possessing good songs and voice, and the Sisters Ford, comedy artistes. Opera House, Treherbert. Mr. F. Bulmer presents his exception- ally powerful company in one of the greatest convict dramas ever written, viz., "Sentenced for Life." The piece is exceedingly well mounted, the scenery leaves nothing to be desired, whilst the dresses and uniforms are of excellent cut. The artistes include those two old favourites, Mr. Reg Oldroyd and Mr. Reginald Payne, who uphold their repu- tations in a praiseworthy manner. The plot is cleverly woven and deals with the terrible existence a, convict sentenced for life must perforce undergo. It depicts inhuman brutes, and throws up into bold relief their antithesis in the shape of a healthy, manhr parson who sympathises and feels with the poor wretches who drag out their terrible existence amongst the rocks of Norfolk Island, Australia, not inappropriately called Hell's Gates. Mr. Bulmer's story, Sentenced for Life," is intensely interesting, and not a little reminiscent of Charles Reade's famous novel, Never Too Late to Mend." Mr. Oldroyd and Mr. Reg. Payne present cleverly drawn character sketches of two extremes as Toby," the convict, and the Rev. Martin Orris" respectively. The role of "Sir Wallace Stillwell" is ably undertaken by Mr. R. Brancepeth Neville; whilst that of Captain Paul Derrick," his nephew, is capably filled by Mr. Alfred Stretton. Roy Stillwell is impersonated by Mr. Tom Dalby. In the ladies' section, Misses Mamie Stanton, Edith Dalby, Lily Bramall, Edith Medlam all fulfil their parts with exceptional ability. For next week" The Nihilist is to. be the attraction. Cardiff Empire. The great male impersonator, Miss Hetty King, appears at Cardiff Empire next week. In her very youthful days, Miss King was chiefly a mimic of the leading artistes, such as Gus Elen, Eugene Stratton, Vesta Victoria, Marie Lloyd, and others. Perhaps the most curious thing is that formerly she played the part of principal girl in pantomime, but since she has adapted the line of male imper- sonator she has invariably played prin- cipal boy. She is a young lady of athletic inclinations, and is very fond of cycling, fishing, golfing, swimming, and running and jumping, too—in fact, a typical modern English girl; and, as a typical English girl should be, full of health and spirits. The Grotesques, whose "Village Con- cert and other burlesques have been so successful at the London Hippodrome, are featured on the bill, and are sure to be greatly appreciated for their refinement, cleverness and mirth-making efforts. Other good turns include the Martine Bros., the comedy trampoline acrobats, who do sixty somersaults in sixty seconds the famous jugglers, Francis and Alfred, in an act full of skill and humour; Tommy Clifford, the boy ventriloquist with a baritone voice; Billie Burford, comedienne; Bros. Redmond, the acro- batic comedians; Nellie Coleman, the female comedian; Thorpe and Coe, in their comedy playlet, My Burglar Fred Elton, in a scena at the1 piano, On Board an Ocean Liner"; and the pic- tures.
