Amusements. Hippodrome, Tonypandy. Renk, the great Danish illusionist, is the premier offering here this week, and he fully upholds his great reputation, jvhich. he has gained at the hands not only of the public, but also of Royalty. His illusions are, indeed, wonderful, and are presented in startling bewilderment. His performance is hardly describable; for instance, his production of all manner of drinks from a clear crystal bottle con- taining water baffles description. Not pnly does Renk perform tricks, but step- ping off the stage, he hands his apparatus to any member of the audience, who is delighted at being able to do the same tricks. As an appreciation of his genius, Renk was commanded on three separate and distinct occasions to give perform- ances at the Imperial Palace at St. Petersburg for H.I.M. the Czar and Court. The Vanderbilts also appear in a very successful act; whilst Harry Drew, the great Welsh basso, delights his audi- ence with exquisite renderings of well- known songs. Dan Henry is very funny in his comicalities; and Master Willie Roberts, Scottish juvenile comedian, com- pletes the strong variety programme. The Bioscope pictures are again of absorbing interest. For next week, Mr. Stone has been fortunate enough to secure The King's Guards," supported by a very powerful company of star artistes. Theatre Royal, Tonypandy. Mr. and Mrs. Kimberley's companies are always welcome in their visits to the Rhondda, and the play, Was She to Blame P which they are presenting at the Royal this week, is no exception to the rule, possessing as it does the advan- tage of having the authoress herself, the celebrated actress, Mrs. F. G. Kimberley (nee Miss L. Addison), in the role of Kate Roselle." She is ably supported by some thoroughly good actors includ- ing Miss Maude Hastings Miss Ellen Beverley, Miss Nita Owen, Miss Florence Steyne, Mr. F. G. Kimberley, Mr. Geo. Keene, Mr. Henry Rutland, Mr. George Langden, Mr. Francis Cavanagh, Mr. John Arthurs, &c., who carry out their various parts to perfection. The scenery and staging is all that can be desired. Next week, another of Armitage and Leigh's splendid companies will appear in a dramatised version of H. Seton Merri- man's most popular novel, With Edged Tools." Palace, Porth. The principal turn at the Palace this week is Tschernoff's Ponies, Dogs and Pigeons, including Hans, the musical pony. Tschernoff displays exceptional abilities in the training of these animals. The remarkable feats performed by them bespeak years of patient training. Morelli and Moore, musical speciality act, are an instant success. Their eccentric absurdities and funniosities win loud applause. Ethel Newman, in a comedy monologue, Her Wedding Day," is very fine, and makes quite a hit. Matt Wilkinson Trio, in a comedy sketch, The Registry Office," is responsible for uproarious laughter. The Jollions (Vida and Fred), in their electric scena, The Spider and the Fly, are charming; and so is Violet Beatrice, a young artiste, and a boy im- personator par excellence. Bert Byrne, the comedian, is funny, as is also Geo. Castrey. Good pictures are shown on the Palascope. Empire, Tonypandy. For the opening week of the New Empire Theatre of Varieties the manage- ment have secured an attractive pro- gramme. Topping the bill is Ye Colonial Septette, in an American musical act, entitled An Old Tyme Hallowe'en," in which Charles Edwards, cornet virtuoso, will be a special feature. Another star turn is Le Roux's Cycling Monkeys', direct from the Continental halls, which are said to be the most marvellous example of animal training extant. Harry Friskey, American comedy juggler, appears in The Dining Room Intruder." The vocalists and comedians include Margaret Monks, a dainty singer of chorus songs; Wood, Wilkins and Com- pany, who give a sketch, entitled The Piano Tuner Beatrice English, J. L. Seymour, and Robb Wilton. Interesting and entertaining pictures will be shown on the Empireoscope, and a thoroughly enjoyable performance can be anticipated. Tivoli, Pentrel Good enjoyment will be obtained by visiting the Tivoli this week. The Hyde- C'ody Trio provide sufficient laughter and humour to banish the worst fit of the blues. Two of these are insane men, judging by their costumes, attitudes, gestures and tricks, which are very clever, in addition to eccentric. The lady mem- ber also does her part well. J. P. Ling brings with him a great reputation as comedian and mimic. His representation of a drunken man attempting to recite The Wreck of the Schooner Hesperus will not be forgotten for many a day. The Falcons are a pair of clever tumblers and balancers, whilst their feats of strength also are not often surpassed. Spangles and Sawdust, Tee and Tee, Maud Vera, Bert Danson, and Harvey and Holt are other (rood turns on a strong bill. The Tivoliscope displays another unusual series of pictures, including the famous film, The Suicide Olub." Opera House Treherbert. "Honour Thy Father," as presented by Mr. T. Morton Powell's company at the Opera House this week, is a truly great domestic play. By presenting a vivid picture of the unnecessary- sorrow and suffering which is inevitably caused by disregarding the Divine injunction, the play strikes home to the heart the great duty which all children owe to their parents. "Gabriel Garth" is a splendid character impersonation by Mr. J. H. Clyndes. Duncan Bly is impersonated with great artistic skill by Mr. Stephen Langton, and Mr. Harry Scott plays "Jack Halyard" (a captain in the mer- chant service) with heartiness. Mike Copplestone (a rolling, stone), by Mr. H. T. Butler gathers no moss:, but he rolls in such a droll fashion that the audience rolls, too—with mirth. Ned Pennyeomquick and Poppy Corn- leigh," respectively played by Mr. Fred Cherry and Miss Florrie Hayes, are two characters which pair off well together, and create endless amusement. The scenery, especially in the boathouse scene in act 2, is magnificent. Next week, the historical drama, Napoleon the Great," will be staged at the Opera House. There is always a peculiar fascination about an historical play. "Napoleon the Great" has this fascinating atmosphere about it in a very marked degree, and the powerful story which the author has woven round this picture of the mighty Emperor is one that rivets the attention with a remark- ably strong grip. Love and passion, vengeance and forgiveness, avarice and sacrifice, wit and frolic are in turn exemplified, keeping the audience in thrilled interest from start to finish. It is a play replete with all the emotions incidental to human life. Miss Kate Waif red, an actress of great power, will play the part of Marie," Mr. Herbert Vere as "Napoleon," sunnorted by a powerful company of well-known artistes, every one being specially engaged for their respective parts. The magnificent dresses and brilliant uniforms make a delightful spectacle. Cardiff Empire. The famous Kremo Family should prove a great attraction at Cardiff Empire next week. Their risley performance is marvellous for its accuracy and grace, and all the daring and clever feats are apparently executed with such ease and precision that one is apt to forget the amount of practice which must have pre- ceded such a satisfactory result. A clever pair of singers and instru- I mentalists will be seen next week in Miss Willette Whittaker and Mr. Wilbur Hill. They have been on the variety stage for the past ten years, and have been asso- ciated in America with some of the finest musicians in that country. Mr. Edward Lauri, of the famous Lauri Family, will present his musical protean melange, entitled In Her Boudoir," which is composed of the best ingredients of opera, musical comedy and farce. The production is distinguished by the engage- ment therein of Australia's premier opera-bouffe artiste, Miss May Beatty. The Prince Milner Trio, in a pot-pourri act, combining acrobatic iuggling, hoop manipulating, wire walking, &c. Harry Conlin, patter comedian; Andy McLeod, raconteur farmyard mimic; and Lilian, a beautiful and clever lady cyclist, are other attractions. Clarence Theatre, Pontypridd." The attraction next week is that ever- green musical comedy, The Lady Slavey." There is a strong caste, includ- ing Miss Nellie Bowman, who was for some time associated with Sir Beerbohm Tree at His Majesty's, London; and Mr. Harry Benet, who undertakes the diffi- cult role of Roberts," the broker's man —a part made famous by that old veteran comedian, Mr. Witty Watty Walton. It is calculated that over 12 millions people have witnessed the performance of The Lady Slavey." [Carl Rosa. Opera Company at Cardiff. Increasing interest is being taken in the advent of the Royal Carl Rosa Opera Company at the New Theatre next week, when the company nays one of those visits which is so keenly looked forward to as it gives us an opportunity of renew- ing our acquaintance with those wonder- ful works which the Carl Rosa embrace in its repertory. On Monday, "Tanllhauser" will be given, and then on the successive even- ings Carmen," Bohemian Girl," Cavalieria Rusticana and Pagliacci," "The Marriage of Figaro," "II Trova- tore," and at a matinee on Saturday Faust will be presented. The Carl Rosa Opera Company will bring with them this year a list of artistes which would be impossible to im- prove upon, and includes a special en- gagement of Miss Gertrude Vania (of Bayrauth, Prague, &c.), and Mr. E. C. Hedmondt. Other well-known and popu- lar favourites can be found in the follow- ing lists:—Sopranos, Miss Ina Hill, Miss Annie Walker and Miss Beatrice Mirand; contraltos, Miss Dorris Woodall, Miss Annie Van Dyck and Miss Marion Broom tenors, Mr. Walter Wheatley and Mr. Edward Davie baritones, Mr. Charles Victor, Mr. Heoden Foster and Mr. Alan Turner; basses, Mr. Arthur Winkworth, Mr. Alexander Richard and Mr. Fredk. Clendon. The full company will be 120 strong. The orchestra will number over 40, and will again be under the skilful guidance of Mr. Eugene Goosens and Mr. Walter Van Noorden. It may interest the reader to learn that the Royal Carl Rosa Opera Com- pany are now at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, where they have been appearing for the last four weeks with remarkable success. They come direct to the New Theatre.
