RAILWAY CHANGES.
RAILWAY CHANGES. AN EVENT of great interest to North Wales is retirietmeirut of Sir Frederick Harrison from the position of general manager of the London and North-Western Railway. During the fifteen years he .has held this im- portant office, Sir Frederick has gained wide- spread popularity, wnd under his control the London and Noirth-Western Railway has gained -the enviable reputation of being the safest line in the world to travel upon. We trust that he may long be spared to enjoy his well-earned re- tirement. Sir Frederick has had an interesting as well as successful career. Poirn in the year 1844, he at the age of twenty entered the service Off the Shrewisbiiiry and Hereford Railway, then under the managemeilit of Mr. Findlay. The young mai's ability soon attracted the notice of Mir. Findilay, and when, at the end of twelve months., the Shrewsbury and Hereford Railway was amalgam ated wilth the Londo,n and North- Western, and Mr. Findlay was transferired to Eustori. as goods m.anager, he took Mr. Harrison with him. After seven years' experience there, Mr. Harrison wia.s sent to Liverpool to be as- sistant to Mr Jmes Sha w, the district superin- tendent, who has been responsible for the train- ing of many railwsay officers, and who. now lives in retirement in Liverpool, respected by all who have fcnown him. From Liverpool 1T. Harrison was transferred, in 1874, to the Chester and Flodyhead district, and a year later he was brought to Busiton as assistant to the chief pas- senger superintendent of the company. In 1885 he was appointed to the important position of chief goods manager, and in 1893, on the death of the then genera1 manager, Sir George Find- lay, he succeeded to what is rega-xded as the highest position in the railway service of the United Kingdom. Sir Frederick's career as general manager has been accompanied by a rapid development of the, railway. Great improvements have been carried out in all branches* of the. service, and these have 'been .followed by a large growth in the company's traffic. The doubling of a great portion of the main line, the great extensions at Crewe and WilleEdeii, and the replacement of practically the whale of the company's fleet of steamships are among the important works too TlunnerOiUS to mention which have been carried out during the term of bis management. Sir Frederick has borne a leading part in the ne- gotiation's of recant years, which have happily resulted in the good understanding which has been established between many of the greatest railway companies of itfoe kingdom, and which is destined to have far-reaching effects, both in the interests of the public and of the propraetors of railway securities. Competitive building, with its accompaniment of increasing capital, will be diminished, and greatly extended facilities will be exchanged by the railway companies for the accommodation both of paasengeis and traders. This is a great service, and he has thrown his great influence into its accomplishment with characterisitiic energy. With all the lesipoinaibility and work which attach to his. position, Sir Frederick Harrison has founci time -to meet other claims. He has been a well-known figure in the Parliamentary committee-rooms at Westminster, where he has been recognised as the leading authority on rail- way management, and where his great experi- ence ,aJ11d wonderfud memory have made him a most effective witness. He has for many years held the appointment of Lieut.-Colonel of the Engineer Railway Volunteer Staff Corps, and has been a member of the War Railway Council, entru,rt:If-d with mattem relating to national de- fence. In 1900, when a -Commission was ap- pointed by the Government to inquire into cer- tain grave allegations as to the hospital arrange- ment" in the South African campaign, Sir Frederick was chosen as a member, the an- nouncement of his name being greeted with marked approval in the House of Commons. In 1902 he was created a knight In 1906 the Sec- retary of State for War appointed him to serve as a member of a committee to inquire into the position of various associations for assisting dis- charged soldiers and sailors, and to consider the whole question of the Civil employment of such me.1- In the same year he was also selected to ,;rvrel upon the Consultative Com- mittee appointed by the Secretary of State for Whr to deal with the training of officers for the higher appointment:, in the Administrative Staff of the Army. Sir Frederick Harrison has won the sympathy and respect of his official col- leagues, and of all classes of the company's em- ployees by his considerate regard for their in- terests, and the .iction of the directo.Ts in ap- pointing him to. a seat on the board will be widely appreciated by them and by his many friends. Sir Frederick Harrison will be succeeded by Mr. Frank Ree. This appointment will be re- ceived with general satisfaction. Mr. Ree went to Li "ve,ipooil in 1885 as assistant to the district goods manager, Mr. David Taylor, and suc- ceeded the latter on his refcirernenlt in 1889. In 1893, in the changes follow.ing on the death of Sir George Findlay, Mr. Ree was appointed chief goods manager From the ability which he has displayed in that capacity, it is believed that he will admirably fill the very responsible position to which he is now called. The pro- motion of Mr. Ree is extremely popular, and is regarded as a fitting climax to many years of strenuous work in many departments of this im- portant .railway. We trust that be may prove as successful as his distinguished predecessor, and that he will show that regard, for the interests of the North Wales puiblis which was displayed in sto eminent a degree by Sir Frederick Harrison.

The retirement of the general manager of the London and North-Western Railway recalls an answer given by a Manchester schoolboy in a general question paper some years ago. The candidates were told to write what thev knew of De Qiunncey, Ruskin, Carlyle, and a of other celabrmties, including Frederic Harrison. One of the boys, who had never heard of the author of Comte's Positive Philosophy or Byzantine History," said confidently to his master afterwards, I know I got the last one right, sir, it s an my contract ticket." He bad failed .to notice that Sir Frederick always spells his name with a k," but a trifling matter like that could be forgiven. History does not say Whether he got any marks for his answer let us hope he did. From a local newspaper's criticism of a per- formance of the Tannhauser overture at Ban- gor last week:—Recall the complex, multitu- dinous, sharply contrasting and yet harmoni- ously blendinb diablerie of the overture, especi- ally towards its close. Remember the stately air, calmly and even majestically moving on in the midst of and through the thronging, surg- ing, incessant, rising, falling, pulsing .swarms of music notes. Up they surge from the infinite up to the brim, and recede an dr.ise again, for ever brimming up to the- rim-nthe rim which it not marked nor seen no rheard, but is inexor- ably tthere-;arud never overflowing. Delicate, dainty, ravishing, seraphic. Joyous, tumultu- ouls-tile tumultoiusmess of a myriad. And «yver calmly on moves the rhythm of the robust bari- tone air,, domllliatLng hut not silencing the ever- upward-springiing spirit music--twitt--ring all around it; hanging on to its every phrase, sparkling, tinkling, dancing along the pathway the stately aiir marks out in its progress; fall- ing in showers, flashing like dewdrops all about it, but never once obliterating or even dimming the noble voice that for ever soars through the empyrean Never once did a single one of the countless accompanying notes, dancing prestissimo, overflow the banks within which majestically moved the ileit-motif."
