, LOCAL CELEBRITIES.— SM©…
LOCAL MR. ADONIAH EVANS. Perhaps there is no better known man in Llandudno than our local celebrity this week. A native of the City of Raugor, Mr Adoniah Evans came to Llandudno over thirty years ago to take charge of the local branch of the Metropolitan Bank, I'1 and quickly identified himself with the social life of the 'town. Hal has been the auditor of the Llandudno Pier Com- pany from its inception, and has w&icbed the Company. rise from the sloug'h of despondency and financial trouble to its pre, sent, proud position as one of the most prosperous undertakings of its kind in the Kingdom. As a musician of more than local fame he has been closely associated with tthe musical life, of the town, and has formed choirs and conducted at various times a. number of prominent musical cantatas, including "David the Shepherd Boy" and "Under the Palms." During1 recent years he has turned his attention to composing, and has set to music the hymn, "Abide with Me"; "The Lord's Prayer," "An Easter Hymn," "H,udders- field," and other works, several of which have been played iby the Lhndiudno Pier Orchestra, and received the c,on-imendation of Mr Arthur Payne and other famous ) musicians. <

----------_-__---...-EMIGRATION…
EMIGRATION NOTES. The only classes of emigrants wanted in Canada ait the present, time are farmers financially able to take up free home- steads or purchase lands, farm labourers, and female domestic servants; there is an excellent demand for these. The de- mand for mechanics is improving and is better than that, which obtained in 1908 a year of depression; but they are not advised to emigrate unless they go to assured employment immediately on arrival, or go, at, the advice of frienas and ha,ve enough money in their pockets to live on till they secure an opening. Wages for mechanics and others are generally speaking lower than they were a year ago, and in some places there has been an excess of unskilled labour. The demand for railway labourers is inter- mittent. There is a fair demand for miners in British Columbia. Every emigrant, male or female, 18 years of age or over, who arrives in Canada, must have in his or her posses- sion the sum of 25 dollars (25 4s.) in addition to a, ticket to his or her inland destination; unless satisfactory evidence is furnished that the emigrant is going to some definite employment or to' relatives or friends already settled in Canada who would take, care of such emigrant. All emigrants sent out. to Canada, by British Charitable Societies or by Public Funds, must obtain certificates from the Canadian Emigration Authorities, Charing; Cross, London, S.W., that they are suitable settlers for Canada. Special attention is drawn to the fact that whenever an im- migrant has within two years of his or her landing in Canada become a public charge, or an inmate of a, penitentiary, ZD I gaol, or prison, or hospital or other charitable institution, such emigrant may, under existing Canadian Law, be deported together with all those dependent on him or her after investigation of the facts. A Bill now before the Canadian Parliament extends this period to three years. In New South Wales there is an excel- lent demand up iCIounky for farmers with a, little capital, for farm labourers, for general labourers, for men on sheep, and cattle stations, and especially for dairy- men. Assisted passages at JE6 to JE9 a head are granted to approved members of these classes, and at from JB.8 to Ell a head to other approved workers. Emi- grants should leave Sydney as soon as lb, possible, and make for the country dis- tricts. There are in several country towns very fair opening for mechanics such as carpenters, bricklayers, masons and blacksmiths if they are not too specialised and can afford to keep them- selves till they find work. In Sydney and suburbs the building, engineering, tailoring, timber, printings, furniture and most other trades have been busy, but there is no demand for more men. There is no demand for miners. The silver min- ing industry at the large Broken Hill Silver Mines has been unsettled by dis- putes as to wages, and miners should not emigrate there unless they have sufficient means to, support themselves in case of need. Competent, cooks, laundresses, and general servants able to cook and to do some laundry work and household duties are much wanted, and may obtain assisted passages at, L3 to £ 6 each. Agricultural labourers and domestic servants may be nominated in Victoria, for cheap passages to that State. The chief demand is in ,country districts for com- petent farmers, farm and general labour- ers, men accustomed to. work in orchards and vineyards, and men on sheep or cattle stations. There is little demand for miners or general laubourers. Manufac- turers have been busy, and there has been a demand for a limited number of skilled men. General female servants, able, to do cooking, washing, and housework, are in good demand throughout, the State, and cooks, housemaids, nurses, etc., in the larger towns. There is some demand for female apprentices and workers in fac- tories. In South Australia there is some de- mand for grooms, coachmen and men who are handy about a house or garden, for farm labourers in the season (October to February), and for female servants. The supply of miners at the copper mines is quit,el sufficient. Experienced fruit grow- ers with a capital of 2500 to, C,1,00,0 should do well. Queensland) offers considerable assist- ance to emigrants. Single female servants from 17 to 3,5 years can obtain free pas- sages, if they have not resided any length of time in largei towns, and can do general household work such as cooking, washing, etc. relatives and personal friends of Queensland settlers can be nominated by them for passages at from 22 for females and C4 for males; and other facilities are given. There is a good demand for general farm labourers, especially dairy hands, and for lads for milking and general farm work. Free homesteads of 160 acres are granted to suitable settlers. There is a, demand for a few experienced coal miners, and carpenters. Assisted passages are granted by Wes- tern Australia, on certain conditions to farm labourers, especially dairy hands, and for lads for milking and general farm work. Free homesteads of 1601 acres are granted to suitable settlers. There is a demand for a, few experienced coal miners, and carp enters. Assisted passages are granted by Wes- tern Australia on certain conditions to farm labourers at £ 6 to 27 10s. each, and to female servants at JE5 to 2.7 each; there is a good demand for these classes. Free homestead farms of 160 acres are granted to settlers on conditions of residence, fencing, and cultivation. The demand for mechanics is not great, and the supply of men in the building and other trades is generally sufficient; there is no demand for more miners. In Tasmania farmers, farm labourers in the season, and female servants are in demand.
