CARDIFF EXCHANGE.
CARDIFF EXCHANGE. BUTE DOCKS, MONDAY. 'Cbanga to-day was well attended, and in the steam coal trade a slight improvement was perceptible, the market closing fairly firm, at Saturday's quotations. The fine weather now prevailing has naturally had a depressing effect on the house coal market, and although some of the largest and bituminous collieries are still busy, fresh orders are now coming in very slowly. Patent fuel was steady at last prices, and there was a good demand for both furnace and foundry coke, at about Saturday's values. In our local freight market chartering for steam was moderately brisk, and a fair amount of business, more especially for the higher Mediter- ranean, has been effected. Rates for this direction generally continue firm, and the same may be said of Gibraltar and West Indian freights. Baltic, Eastern, and coasting business was quiet. Out- ward quotations to the States remain unchanged. The following comprise the latest operations Gibraltar, 9i M (Blythwood) Port Said, lis 9d (Reading) Barcelona, 14. 61 (Escurial) and again at 14s 4id for Mauritania Malta, 10i (Llangorse) Oporto, 8d 6d (Collingwoodl Leghorn, 12s (Alicia) Bilbao, 5s 9d (Hetty) Smyrna, lis 6d Malta, 10s (local steamer) Havre, 5s lid Gibraltar, 9s 6d (prompt boat) Havre, 59 (coal) 53 3i (fuel), the last named Swansea loading. Sail.—Outward freights, more particularly for Rio de Janeiro and Monte Video, continue quiet, and for the River Plate very little chartering is being done. There is still a very good demand for the West Indies at^last rates. For the Baltic the enquiry is still limited. There is little or no change in Mediterranean or coasting freights. Eastern rates also remain unaltered. Ore.—Rates from Bilbao. continue moderately firm, with fair demand for tonnage to load for the Bristol Channel. From Benisaf, Huelva, Cartha- gena, Garrucha, and Ergasteria there is a steady demand for forward tonnage, and several boats are still wanted to load for the continent and the East and West coasts of the United Kingdom. Pomaron, Carloforte, and other Mediterranean ore quotations remain unchanged.
