! CARDIFF EXCHANGE.
CARDIFF EXCHANGE. BUTE DOCKS, TUESDAY. A very moderate activity at present, obtains in all the staple trades at this port, and the lull which has prevailed in the steam coal market for some weeks past still continues, with very little prospect of an improvement in the near future. On 'Change to-day there was a fairly good attendance, but an unusual quietude was the prevailing characteristic in all our local products. In the steam coal market there was only a very moderate demand for large, and prices all round ruled weaker. For small, however, there was a very fair inquiry, and the high prices obtained for this commodity since the holidays were fully maintained. In the house coal trade a steady business was doing but, with the season so far advanced, that there should be a weakening of prices for all descriptions of bituminous coal is not to be wondered at. Local makers of patent fuel are still busy, but the new business effected is barely sufficient to replace the new orders now under execution. Price, however, for best brands are still quoted firm. The pitwood market continues quiec and prices unimproved, but a buoyant tone still Dervades the manufactured iron and steel trades, and with the local works well employed and fresh orders coming in freely, an a i vance on the prices now ruling may confidently be looked forward to. In our local freight market to-day chartering for steam tonnage was brisk, and a good average business has been effected. Rates for the higher Mediterranean ports continue steady, as were also Spanish, West Indian, Gibraltar, Bay ports, and coasting freights. Baltic firm. Eastern quotations remain unchanged. The following comprise the latest operations:—Jamaica, 16 9 i, clean terms of charter (Eglantine) Port Said, 11 9 i, option Malta, 9s 91 (East Anglia); Danube 12s 6 j (Parthenon) Marseille, 13 fes (Helms- ley) Dartmouth, 4 31 (Vulture); St Lucia, 14s 6:1 (Ayali?); Vigo, 711 (Glenmanua) Las Palrnas, lis (Abermaed); Malta, 9, 31, clean terms ot t>h»rt»-jr/Muriel), and again at 10. for (Livadia); Smyrna, lis 61 (Trewedden),and again at same rate for (Golden Grove); Port Said, lis 9d (Beethoven) Cronstadt, 7s coal, 7s 6d fuel, the last named Swansea loading. Sail.—Outward freights for the River Plate continue quiet, whilst for Rio Janeiro, Monte Video, and the Brazils genetally quotations main- tain a downward tendency. For the west coast and the East Indies there is letis inquiry, and, as a consequence, rates for these particular directions rule easier. Homeward freights from the wood and nitrate ports continue firm, with exceptionally good demanu from the latter for bandy tonnage. The following fixtures have been reported for South Wales loading:-Rio Janeiro, 26 3i Rosario, 41s, Norwegian vesgel Monte VHIPO, 27s, June cancelling, and again at 27s 6d for 1,850 vessel; Rio Janeiro, 24< 31 (Z mi), and again at 24s 6d for (Terapaca),July ino img Buenos Ayres, 35s, option Monte Video, 28.. 61 Monte Video, 27-s, June shipment. Ore.—Homeward business from the Spanish and Mediterranean ports remains moderately brisk. During the past week, however, quota- tions from (Jarthngena, Benixaf, and Pomaron have shown a tendency to still further decline. From Salta Cabello and Bilbao there is a con- tinued demand for bandy boats to load for ports in the Bristol Channel, whilst from Huelva, Carloforte, and Bona a good many boats have been recently chartered for the continent and east and west coasts U K. at fairly remunerative rates. There is still some little inquiry from Ergasteria, Pomaron, and Elba at about last figures. The following fixtures have been reporte,-i -Bilbao to Rotterdam, 7s 6d, good terms, 2,200 steamer Bilbao to Temeuzan, 7s 7d, free address, 1,750 boat.
SWANSEA FXCHANGE.
SWANSEA FXCHANGE. SWANSEA, TUESDAY. f The meetin to-day was fairly attended, and we observed large buyers present, including Mr Dickerson, of Liverpool, and others. Consider- able business is reported to have been carried through, especially in tin plates, but we under. stand for short delivery. The steady decrease in the stocks of iron and tin plates, together with a decrease in the production, is a factor not to be overlooked as being the means of favourably influencing the prices. Pit!
