FOOTBALL NOTES.
FOOTBALL NOTES. [BY LINESMAN."] Now that the names of the representatives of the clubs in the North v. South match are known one can express an opinion upon the selection. Perhaps I have more to do with the South team than the North, as last week I made some remarks apon the selection of the first-named team. I ungrudgingly give the gentleman who selected them the praise he is justly entitled to, and so far from favouring the I Dolgelley team there is a majority of one of Towyn players in the list. 1 believe he has also been wise in his generation in appointing partners from the same teams, as, for instance, the two backs are from Towyn, two of the three half-backs are from Dolgelley, the left wing is from Towyn. and the right from Dolgelley; the centre-forward is a Towyn Man, and the goalkeeper comes from Dolgelley. in the North team I notice the names of some, excelleut players. They will indeed be strong in the back division, having J. Williams (Barmouth) and J. T. Owen (Blaenau) as full backs. Air Oswald Davies (a Welsh international) has been selected as one of the half-backs, but I understand he will not play, thus W. Thomas (Blaenau) will take his place. I believe the back division of the North team is stronger than that of the South, but of the forwards I believe the pick is on the South side. The match is sure to be an excellent one, and through Mr Thomas, the energetic secretary of the League, the Cambrian Railways Company have arranged cheap excursion trains to run to Towyn. I shall not be pleased unless I see a 1000 spectators on the field. Bye-the-bye, who is to be the referee I am going to back the Ncrth. For some reason or other Dolgelley failed to visit Portmadoc on Saturday. I have inquired the reason for t! e breakdown bnt have failed to get a satisfactory reply. One of their players had come on Friday night from near Bala only to be told that the team had broken their engagement. That gentleman lost a day's work and consequently a day's pay and no match. Unless the team will maive an effort to fulfill their fixtures the enthusiasm of the players will drop, and the keeping up of the team will become a. more and more difficult task. I am assured that Dolgelley have not willingly broken their engagement, but I am afraid they did not make a serious attempt to keep it. Fortunately, the referee (a Towyn man) was informed of the fact in time, and the friction over the payment of his expenues was saved. I now come to the Towyn v Barmouth match, played on the ground of the Towyn club in fine weather, and before the best gate received by Towyn this season. Towyn had throughout the week felt confident of winning two points over the match, but they may be considered fortunate, in view of the development of matters, in having returned from the field with a drawn game. I have no doubt that if the game continued for another five or ten minutes another goal would have been registered for Towyn, as the last 20 minutes was simply a bombardment of the Barmouth citadel, and it was during that time that the two goals for Towyn were scored. I have said that Towyn were fortunate in securing a draw. I will uphold that statement by relating what I actually saw, but let me first of all state that the last goal given in favour of Towyn was put in by a player who was off side, therefore, on the strength of that statement the result ought to be two to one. Such is not my opinion, as I believe a goal that should have been given for Towyn was not allowed them. I refer to an occasion when I saw the goalkeeper throwing the ball out after it had gone too far into the net. Barmouth all through played a strong defensive game, although none of them except J. Williams played a brilliant game. I understand the above player had refused until late in the week to consent to play fox Barmouth, but it was good to the visitors that he did accom- pany them. He was the best back on the field and not once did I see him failing to use his foot or his head as the occasion required to the best advantage. His partner is a young man-in fact, a boy—with a promising kick. I would advise the Barmouth Committee to train him, and before the end of the present season he is sure to shine. In point of merit the visitors second best player was the goal- keeper, who time after time, and sometimes in quick succession, fisted and knockcd in all directions. His saves at times were really marvellous. The two Davies's on the wings made good attempts some. times at combination, and in this they were, assisted by D. Davies, in spite of protestations by his father before the end of the game. Armer and Atkins require more practice and dash, Barmouth had a good half-back line of strong men, the pick being D. Richards. Coming to the Towyn players they were far from playing the game they played against Aber- ystwyth the week previous. They had lost the quickness on the ball I mentioned in my last notes, and that had more to do with the result than any. thing, except one thing. That was the action of the referee in continually stopping the game on what seemed to him to be the least violation of the rules. I beg to respectfully differ from his decisions and cannot for the life of me make myself believe that the rules were violated on half the occasions on which the whistle blew. To stop players abruptly when making their runs for goal was most dis- heartening and had a deteriorating effect upon the game. On the other hand, the referee, I take it, is able to satisfy his conscience that he kept strictly to the rules and that it was not his fault they were violated by the players. I give him the credit of having done justice to both teams, but there was a great difference between this game and the one on the previous Saturday when there was hardly ever a stop. Once more I have to characterise Gladstone Davies's play as most stylish and effective. He played a gentlemanly game in a masterly manner, AND X.ILOPET hA WILL OOTOTIVNO JO- EO, -.J1 UIU06 acknowledge he can do. Undoubtedly he saved his side from defeat, and all the credit for the first goal awarded to Towyn must be given him, as he scored after some splendid dribbling work by a strong and accurate shot into the net. Joe Edwards will come next. This player is improving every time he goes on the field and is full of tricky devices; where he fails is in the finishing stroke, too many of which are indeed outside the mark. Bill Jones in goal had nothing hardly to do. Lewis Pughe, always safe, forgot himself last Saturday by running out too far with the ball. Evan Jones did not play up to his mark, and I saw him failing two, if not three, what should have been certain goals. Ted Hughes was the pick of the half-backs. F. Smith is improving, and is able to take his place with the others. Jim Owen did good work at back. The right wing (George Davies and Joss) were not seen to their usual advantage, and altogther Towyn were far from being up to their form. I must give Barmouth the credit for managing a drawn game, a result the Towyn team never expected. I notice from the posters announcing the North v. South match that soldiers in uniform are allowed free admission to the field on Boxing Day. Will it include those who have joined the Volunteer movement and who have not yet received their uniform ? The match between Aberystwyth and Builth in the third round of the Welsh Cup was decided last Saturday on the ground of the former, and Aberyst- wyth won by seven goals to nil. What, seems to be inexplicable is that Towvn were beaten by Builth to the tune of six goals to nil, while they managed to make a draw with Aberystwyth when they were only short of Rea and Hoose-if they claim the latter as one of themselves. Llanegryn brought a team to Towyn on Saturday to play the County School team. After excellent" play the game ended in a draw of one goal each.
[NOTES BY CROSSBAR].
[NOTES BY CROSSBAR]. In last week's issue I noticed Linesman com- plaining that Towyn were without a representation on the Cambrian League Council. Festiniog also suffer from the same cause. Why were Towyn and Festiniog overlooked this year I wonder ? Surely it was not purposely done. From what I hear, the League is getting rather shaky this season. Peny- groes have dropped out altogether. Machynlleth have refused to become affiliated. Festiniog very nearly followed suit with Penygoes and it strikes me that Barmouth are only so-so. But thanks to a few firm friends of Festiniog football, such a disaster was averted. Now, I should explain that there are certain Saturdays on which the Festiniog team catin-,t possibly travel away from home, but if Festiniog had a representation on the Council, I have no doubt but that the fixtures could be satis- factorily arranged. I should be very sorry to see the League go under" and the best way to keep the ship afloat in my opinion is to have a fair repre- sentat.ioii on the Council—one representative at least from ea.:oh club. Just a word to the Barmouth F. C. What is there wrong with the works, lads ? Although Festiniog are as badly off as Barmouth in circum- stances generally they inteud "playing plucky," and will try their level best to fulfil their League fixtures, and I see that they intend helping Bar. mouth to the best of their ability by offering to lay at the seaside on January 8th if Barmouth romise truth and honour" to come over here n the 29th (i.e., the date originally arranged for their home match). -Now, Barmouth, wake up! Don't show the white feather now, with half the season practically over. Five Festiniog players in the North team. Very complimentary and seasonable, and what is more each of the five thoroughly deserve the honour, and will I am sure render a good account of themselves. Play up to your reputation, lads Dolgelley v. Festiniog! New Year's Day! There's a tit-bit for you, gentlemen. Dolgelley gave Festiniog r,he best game they have had this season a fortnight ago, and they can depend on Festiniog returning the compliment. I would'nt venture to go evens on either team myself; but here's to Festiniog. Play up, Blaenau
