The report of the superintendent of the Lanca- shire and Western Sea Fisheries District, for the last quarter contains the following words In the southern part of Cardigan Bay division, there is no shelter of any kind where even small vessels can be kept afloat in safety from all winds, except Aberdovey Harbour, and even here there is not water over the bar except at certain times of the tide. The consequence is that vessels when caught in gales especially at night, have to face them out in the Bay, as owing to the want of lights Aber- dovey bar is dangerous to take at night." V I think it would be a most advisable action for the Sea Fishery Committee, in conjunction with the local authorities, to approach the Trinity Brethren, or whoever are the lighting authorities, for that part of the coast, with a view to having leading lights put there, to guide vessels over the bar, or at, any rate to have a gas buuy placed near the bar. I am sure the erection of the same would be a great boon to those who have to visit this part of the coast, which, owing to its rocky formation, reefs running out several miles seaward, want of harbour and safe anchorage accommodation, and the dearth of guiding lights, can only be described at the best of times as dangerous. *#* These remarks are deserving of all consideration and there is evidently an urgent necessity for something <o be done. We believe that the Brethren have been approached on this matter once without success, but it is possible that if another attempt were made, with the assistance of the Sea Fishery Committee as Mr Dawson suggests, the thing might be carried out successfully. But the local authorities must move at once and deal with the question in its entirety once and for all; it is useless talking of bad trade, &c, while needs of this de- scription are ignored. The people of Aberdovey know very well what should be done, but who amongst them is prepared to do it ? V The question of improved train service for the coast, has evidently been lost sight of altogether. Î Aberystwyth however is moving in the matter, and when they have secured special trains the coast will wake up. If this comes to pass, as to all appearances it will, visitors will not hesitate to go down to Aber- i ystwyth by a fast express, rather than spend twO or three additional hours in a slow local, in order to come down to Towyn, Aberdovey or Barmouth. I" It is a question of deep concern, but the majority
