The annual report of the Towyn Intermediate School, presented to the Governors at last Satur- day's meeting, is an encouraging and interesting document. It is quite evident that the school is doing good work, that the instruction given is sound, and the staff is a capable one. This is amply supported by the results obtained, especi- ally in the various public examinations. During the past four years scholarships and exhibitions to the value of £ 1,160 have been gained direct from the school," writes the Headmaster, and it is a record of which he may be justly proud. We doubt very much whether any other County School in the Principality can boast a better record than that of Towyn. It is an average of close upon X300 a year. The Rendel and County Exhibitions of Merioneth in both sections were gained by Towyn School scholars, and in connection with the Welsh Central Board examinations the work done by the Honours Class in French is being reported as be- ing the best in Wales. Let us hope the excellent results given may continue for years to come. *#* There is one feature of the report which should receive careful consideration. The Headmaster draws attention to the want of more classroom accommodation, and the Government Inspector also presses this question forward. The County Schools are each of them intended to provide for the re- quirements of a particular district. That district is limited to a certain area generally surround- ing the school, and theoretically, at any rate, the school is meant to be used only for the children of that particular area. The question therefore arises whether Towyn school provides sufficient aecommodation for the children in its area. The headmaster's report states that there are thirty boarders in the school-practicajly 30 per cent of the school. Where do these children come from ? That is a question Towyn ratepayers have a right to ask an answer to, beforo they are called upon to pro. vide further accommodation. *#* If these 30 children came from outside the Towyn district, thelGovernors ought to see to it that the ratepayers are not called upon to make greater provision in the school. To the extent that these children are over-orowding the accomniodatiol" they should be eliminated in fairness, not only to the Towyn district, but to the Various school districts from which they come. It is no doubt Is compliment to the teaching staff that parents from a distance should send their children to Towyn school, but there is, as we have indicated, a wider aspect of the question which should receive the serious consideration of the Committee appointed to deal with the matter. If, however, it is thought that the presence of children from a distance helps Towyn as a watering-place the ratepayers probably would have no objection to providing th necessary accommodation. A reference, during the discussion, to the grant drew from Mr Haydn Jones a most remarkable statement, wuft which Mrs Rowlands expressed her agree- ment. Mr Haydn Jones is of opinion that the
